Says you. I still use FireWire all the time. I use it more often than USB. I really only use USB for my iPods and printer.

Well if only YOU comprised the bulk of Apple's market, it would be a different story.

Firewire isn't a big draw when a local Best Buy stocks no more than ONE Firewire hard drive, and a local Tigerdirect stocks 11 FW drives out of ~ 120.

FW is all but dead. If no one's really going to use the port there's no point in adding it. We're talking about the average consumer here, who'll be using USB. For the few "enthusiasts" that have FW equipment, buy an adapter (if one is available), or buy a new USB device to replace it, or get a Mac that supports FW, or get a generic PC.

How many people use that keninsgston (idk how to spell it) lock? I doubt many use it. Yet it is on every Apple product. And Firewire is definitely used more than that lock, yet Firewire is gone. So according to you, Apple would have ditched that lock on the MB by now.

It's a lock. It should have some kind of lock. It has nothing to do with hardware ports.

A lock is found on almost all small or portable computers and electronics equipment, particularly on expensive ones. Duh.

WTF you think there are USB to FireWire adapters (that actually work)? You have no idea what you're talking about.

yeah i was really expecting a $100 price drop on the macbook. But i guess apples sales figures show their current pricing is just fine... glad the macbook finally caught up, but now there is very little justifying the extra $200 for the entry pro.

In New Zealand we got a nice price drop on everything they updated, Macbook now $1699 was $1899 WOOO HOOO still $999 would be nicer ;)

Then you're out of luck. Buy USB.

I know exactly what I'm talking about because the issue is obvious. No need for a nearly dead connectivity technology on an entry-level notebook.

However, people who shoot video or a lot of stills need the fastest download speeds possible. And then again when backing up to external drives. USB 2.0 is fast, but not nearly as fast as Firewire.

The average user may not need it. But working pros and semipros, or serious enthusiasts for that matter, find it essential.

Hence, the Macbook Pros that have the firewire ports.

What are you talking about? You're saying it's both dead and a pro technology. Make up your mind.

It's a Pro tech that's on the way out. It's not difficult to understand.

Why do you even bother arguing about this? The market for which the Macbook is targeted won't be using Firewire. Most of them don't even know what it is and don't care.

So what will be replacing FireWire? It can't be on its way out if it isn't replaced.

NO FIREWIRE!?!?

The following is an actual(ly fake) conversation between the Head of MacBook design and Steve Jobs

Head of MacBook design: Umm, Mr. Jobs, did you forget all about what happened last time you did this?

Steve Jobs: Did what?

HMBD: Took out the FireWire, which is maybe the most useful port on the whole thing.

SJ: Hmmhmm, go on...

HMBD: Don't you think that maybe we should learn from our mistakes?

SJ: Sure sure... keep talking...

HMBD: Are you even paying attention to me?

SJ: No, sorry, I was busy taking out the Matte screen option from the MacBook Pro.

HMBD promptly commits suicide

Getting ride of the Kensington would get rid of most of Apple's Business customers.

Most schools/offices use the lock, because you just can't trust people.
I don't think many CONSUMERS use it, because, well, they just don't need it :p

And there is a huge difference between 'Professional' and 'Business'

This is my first post here. Apple took a step back from their previous macbook.

:confused::confused:

I totally agree with this. Firewire is something that I think defines the Apple computer. Why did they drop it... again? Maybe if they kept that little feature, I might have considered getting one of these. The only thing I like about the latest update is that it lowers the price of the refurbished models from the last generation macbook.

Apple released a version like this months ago and it did so badly that it was pulled from production. Now they bring it back with a cheaper plastic casing, a non-removable battery, and they don't even lower the price?

I'll admit the LED screen is an improvement, but they should have installed it and the mini display port on the last generation. I would pay more for the last generation macbook than this.

Apple will not care about the people that demands the price to be lower. It depends on you if you do or you don't want to spend that much money. For you people complaining and saying PC has better computers for a lower price, go ahead and buy that, no one's stopping you.

OS X, plain and simple...

Not to mention OSX AND Windows 7.

I'm unsure why people would choose the white macbook over the aluminum MBP 13" though, unless they really need to save $100-$200, but in this economy every penny is essential, I guess.

FW is no longer needed for video. Most new camcorders are USB 2.

This should read: Most CRAPPY new camcorders are USB 2...
Sony, Canon, etc. have massively dumbed down their consumer line, just like Apple does.
Picture quality and resolution of these cams are great, but their manual controls are either a joke or a hassle. Therefore you can't take them to the limit.
Any halfway serious video amateur has to go prosumer now for their camcorders and "pro" on the Mac side.

This is a very good update to the Macbook IMO. I just ordered one yesterday too. For those complaining about the lack of FW, I guess Apple wants you to get the 13" MBP instead.

those in the states.. how long does it usually take Best Buy to receive in newly announced mac products? just estimated time.. looking to get the new MB

no FW, no sale

While the lack of FW will keep me from upgrading, it was probably still a good business decision. I wouldn't be surprised if for every one of me who doesn't buy a $1k MacBook there are more than 4 others who get "up-sold" and spend an extra $250 to get a MBP.

Heck, if Win7 keeps getting such good reviews, I might just switch again and really save $$$. Think different, you know.

Because hardly anyone is using it. This is an entry-level notebook.

Firewire hardly defines Apple. It defines Apple no more than NuBus did or QuickDraw GX.

Once USB 3 is implemented (or LightPeak) you can say goodbye to Firewire altogether. What are you going to do then?

Think outside the MR bubble and quit thinking the entire market revolves around your personal collection of hardware.

The new Macbook will sell just as well (if not better) than the model it's replacing. As usual. No worries.

So, I have no experience using FW. I have an IMAC and thinking of getting the MB for travel, school, etc.. How would I transfer pics, musisc, etc from my Imac to my MB? Whats the easiest and fastest way?
