Here's what bugs me...

-Some are angry about the lack of Firewire and SD.
-Some are angry about the specs being so close to the MBP.
-Some are angry about the price still being too high.

I look at it like this...

If you don't need firewire...Apple just gave you a Macbook Pro for less $$$. That's the approach I'm taking with it.

Do I the feminine looking white plastic? Sure. But if that's the sacrifice I have to make for value and a Mac system, I'll do it.

Amen.

Agreed,
the best thing folks could do is send in feedback http://apple.com/feedback
It's not about complaining, it's about being sure Apple knows the features we want and need. In my opinion at-least FireWire 400 should be on EVERY Mac.

I say we take it a step farther. We need floppy drives back in macs. I wont buy another mac until this feature is back on ALL macs!!!

Ok, let's say I'm a musician with the new macbook.

I want to record something in GarageBand, so I try to connect my FW audio interface. Oh wait, there's no FW interface!
Ok, no problem! I take the cheap built-in audio solution and plug the monitor speakers into the audio out. Ok.. and now let's connect the output from my synthesizer to the MB.. Oh wait! There's no more audio port left! No problem! I just connect a separate speaker to my synthesizer and put it in front of the MB mic! It's so easy!

new version to use

Hi,
I just purchased this new macbook today. I had bought a new macbook this past thursday and exchanged it today when I saw that new versions had been released. I want to replace macbook.

Not so happy about this macbook

From the comments here I will have to assume that the MacBook will remain the largest selling Apple laptop.

I was hoping that I also could get excited but it looks like I will have to make do with the 17-inch MacBook Pro as my desktop machine and buy a PC Netbook (probably the HP Mini) as my light weight traveling machine.

Where's my Credit Card?

Oh wait, still $999? Seriously?

Why not $749. That seems like a better price.

Led screen, plastic unibody, glass multitouch pad, 7 hours battery, more powerfull, more hd space.... 999$ or 899€ are fine prices imho.

It is important to have FW800 on all MBP, Macbook white is fine without any FW imho. If you are a musician or another kind of pro just buy the 13" MBP

By the way for those who say this new unibody MacBook will still crack a lot, I really think you're wrong about that. As an owner of a White MacBook since September 4, 2007, all of the cracks that came up were in places where two pieces meet. Where the palm rest meets the bottom case and where the display edge meets the outside plastic. Now that's it's a unibody enclosure, these carcks won't come up anymore. Plus, if you use a neoprene sleeve, they won't show up at all, even on the old MacBook.

I too expect Apple to have finally remedied the cracking issue with this new design. Of course, ironically the new Macbook's top case is now again more like the iBook G4s which didn't have these issues either.

I'm not impressed at all.
But who cares about this overpriced consumer notebook anymore.
Unlike with the 1st generation unibody flop, by now we have at least a better alternative with the 13 MBP.

I dont know if its nostalgia or the iBook G4 really was perfect.

The only thing about it that always seemed really awkward to me was the giant trackpad button, which resulted in constant PB 12" envy. Other than that, it was a great machine though.

What I love about the new Macbook is the fact that the topcase and display bezel is now actual white instead of grey.

Err, I have a MacBook and I always use firewire. Time Machine Backups. MUCH faster than USB2. Target disk Mode. Importing video from DV.

Here is my question: what's the point of removing firewire from the MacBook? Why take away a feature that only costs Apple $10-30? My guess is that Apple wants you to buy a MBP, even though $600 notebooks have firewire.

BINGO! I wish everyone else would just recognise that Apple wants to upsell you the 13" MBP. Sure no one is saying it's "nice" of them but it makes perfect financial sense for Apple as a profit generating commercial entity.

Has anyone seen the price premium for firewire hard disk enclosures over plain USB ones? Apple can reason out that if you can afford the price premium for a firewire hard disk enclosure you can afford to upgrade to a MBP. If you can afford expensive firewire audio gear Apple knows you can afford a 13" MBP.

I own a BlackBook and use FW400 for all my external drives (with a FW800 option on all drives), so I would never buy another MB without FW.

In addition, the Geniuses with whom I have spoken hate the absence of FW because of the inability to put the Mac in Target Disk Mode, which I have also used when diagnosing and repairing my friend's iMac.

I hear this "we need target disk mode" a lot. If I were an Apple genius or just somebody who needs to diagnose a Mac know what I'd do? I'd just connect a USB hard disk and boot off of it complete with all of my diagnostic tools on it. And I can access the Mac's hard disk just as I would with target disk mode though the speed won't be as fast. I bet it's much more likely for someone to have a USB hard disk than a spare Mac lying around. So really, this "we need target disk mode" is not a good reason for needing firewire.

I just don't get it...

I understand the frustration over the lack of firewire. Hell, I'm frustrated over the lack of SD slot because I use that on my current laptop for my digital camera photos.

But man, compared to the last Macbook think of all that was gained...

-LED display (same as MBP), WITHOUT the ridiculously glossy glass in front of it.
-(supposedly) stronger build that hopefully won't crack
-The exact same celebrated battery life as in the MBP that will likely last as long as you own the machine. (unless you literally go cordless every day)
-Same RAM as MBP
-BIGGER hard drive.
-Same trackpad as MBP

When you look at it from a pricing perspective, of course Apple had to make some decisions in order to make the entry MBP a still attractive commodity. Personally I wish they bumped down the 2.53 MBP, then I'd definitely go the MBP route.

The Macbook is what it is: a consumer machine that does all the Mac stuff that a person who wants a machine that "just works" wants.

I'm happy with this redesign because now I get exactly what I want: A Macbook that can still hang with the Pro. (mainly with the battery and trackpad)

This happens at every refresh. Endless complaints, ranting and raving. Then it sells like crazy. Apple's notebooks are #1 in the industry. They're at the very core of record Mac sales, and people are lining up to buy them *in a recession.*

Remember: Apple fansites have no basis in reality. They're populated in large part by people who love Apple (love to complain?), but want a Windows-like hardware experience with an OS X interface. Except you can't have it both ways. In other words, they want hackintoshes with nicer cases.

Apple fansites have no basis in reality.

So true.
Do you people honestly think including firewire would require Apple to raise the price of this machine?

Infact, they could include a firewire, SD card slot and a largerd hard drive, and still sell it for the same price - AND profit from it.

I also love how Apple is calling their new machine greener:
And the display is greener than ever: Power effecient, free of harmfull toxins...

So the screen is green... what about the plastic case? Not so green? lol

returning my GF's 5 week old Macbook to BestBuy and waiting for them to receive these in. Glad to be a Premier silver member which enables a 45 day return (usually 14 days) and no restocking fee (15%) aww yeah. Hope they get them in sooner than later =)
