Argh, I was using the "the white MB is old" excuse as a way of getting a new MBP. Damn. But I need FW :(

Yay! This was basically the update that I wanted--my beloved white macbook (I think the others look ugly) with a 7 hour battery, glass trackpad, and LED screen. Now if only the RAM went up to 8 gb instead of 4 gb... more for future updates rather than right now because 8gb of ram is so expensive.

What do you do on your MB that would require 8 GB of RAM?

I like the design for the most part, I feel as if it something to get use to (considering we were stuck with the same design for three years). I think they should have kept the ports separate and kept firewire and added an SD slot... But these are all commodities that we can live without (well, I can anyway =P).

Glad to see that Apple is joining the rest of the computer manufacturers and starting to implement the i7's into their computers.

I have a feeling that the MacBook Pro's will be updated very soon.

right off the bat when I saw this update, my first thought was why, of all the computers in Apple's lineup, the only one that they don't include an SD-card slot in is their consumer notebook? unless maybe I just missed something...

aside from that, though, this looks like a very slick update to the MacBook, I'm really digging the new design (though still 1.08" thick? would've been nice to see them lay off the extra curves and use that extra space to reduce the thickness a bit)... it would've also been nice to see Apple include an SD-card slot and/or FireWire connector in this latest revision, but with Light Peak connectors on the not-so-distant horizon, I guess I'm willing to hold off on buying anything new computer-wise for now.

what do people really use FW for that USB can't take over??? USB is basically the new standard. i've never used FW. my brother used it once back in the day for his iomega drive. that was it.

enclosed battery....is it really that big of a deal? only times i've had to remove my battery was to install more memory. other wise i would of love the more battery life.

now for the big question regarding the new MB. why should i get a MBP instead of the MB besides the aluminum enclosure and the ability to have a faster processor???? only other reasons would be FW and SD card slot which seriously, USB can take care of both of those.

i'd like to see a speed between the 2gb 2.26ghz MB and the 2gb 2.26ghz MBP.

This looks great... but I wish they had decided to compete more. Selling a slightly slower version of this at $799 would definitely put a dent in the PC laptop and eBook markets.

Because Apple doesn't have a consumer model or a professional model. Apple has an expensive model, and a poor-person model, which is deliberately dumbed down. So now, you can get a $1000 Macbook, or a $1200 Macbook with Firewire, and SD slot, Backlit keyboard, that can dent.

On another note, WTF is up with that new remote? It looks like Mickey-mouse.

I hate them. They advance faster than computers so you're soon left with an out of date slot on a $1,000 laptop. USB is always in style.

My last TV came with a media reader for showing photos. Soon after they came out with a faster speed, which my new camera used. Oh well, the slot is useless now, it won't read the newer cards!

Just use external readers which can be cheaply replaced when the technology changes.

If you look on the gallery shots of the new MB, at the photo that shows the side of the MB, it does show a FW slot. Not sure if that's a mistake or not, but check it out -

thats the old (now) MacBook.

my god, please dont let me think there will massive amounts of sans firewire MacBook complainers. Apple bloody put it in the aluminium MacBook and changed it to a Pro... for the same price!

Well some audio/video professionals invested a lot of $$ in firewire interface devices and it doesn't make sense to re-invest in USB. But on this low-end model, firewire isn't really needed because those who use it will buy the more powerful machines. Few modern consumers even know what target disk mode is, let alone how to use it.

Yeah, that's new, I was waiting for it to be updated. It's probably the only thing I'll really end up buying in the next couple of weeks.

I'm a little sour about the hardware of this new Macbook. Having just bought a 13" MBP in June, I'm surprised that the new MB got bumped past the Pro completely with the exception of FireWire and the aluminum (and possibly having a brighter screen, as has been rumored). You would have thought that if Apple knew they were going to update the MBs like this, that the Pros would at least come with the same sized hard drive, or a 7200rpm as standard versus 5400rpm.

I do realize that Apple does this stuff all the time, but it's a little reversed for them as in my experience, they tend to cripple the lower priced products in comparison to the higher; not have them exceed.

Ah, got it, thanks. Agreed - if you need the FW, just get the MB Pro.
