Integrated Graphics MacBook Launch At E3 Seems Like An Inappropriate Event

Launching it E3 would be perfect because it would get at one of the MacBook's target audiences. I.E. College & Uni student who like games also.

This might make sense, but, E3 is all about games isn't it?
Yeah that's what I'm thinking mikea. Integrated Graphics are not going to be game-playing-centric Macs. So it's a weird place to launch such a weak graphics Mac UNLESS Apple is going to offer a KILLER GRAPHICS OPTION at the top of this line with a higher res screen?

I really hope this isn't the end of the 12" form factor iBooks. I have a current generation G4 iBook 12" and would be tempted by an Intel replacement but probably not if its 13.3" minimum. Also the single core Intel isn't going to be radically quicker than my G4 so... meh.

Also, i'd definitely not order one if they suffer from the MBP problems of whining, mooing, cooking themselves etc

Those risk takers who are first in line to buy definitely risk getting "burned" :)

I think Apple REALLY needs to get these out asap BECAUSE, education buying season has already begun, and if schools can get a pc with everything a macbook has except OSX, they will, especially if they need their orders in by summer.

(I'm speaking for my university who is choosing between ibooks or some dell thing. They have to order before 15th of May.) :(

Like it or not universities sole goal is software compatibility. That is where Boot Camp comes into play however there is a catch. Boot Camp is NOT ready for prime time. Frankly if I was CIO of a university I would start doing some testing now but realistically I wouldn't go anywhere near Apple's gear until:

1. Leopard with a final released version of Boot Camp ships
2. A legit solution for right clicking on a MBP is released by Apple. (3rd party hacks don't count.)
3. Apple gets their crap together with driver support on XP.
4. Apple remaps the F12 key as delete so people can hit ctrl-alt-del. (Again 3rd party hacks don't count.

Right now Apple can ship new iBooks\MacBooks. But I honestly don't think anyone in the business world is going to take the plunge until Boot Camp leaves Beta (or IMHO Alpha) town.

That being said I do think they are going to sell a [bleep] load of these things to your average consumer. I know 3 iBook users who are VERY (Read: Its a forgone conclusion that they will buy a MacBook) interested in the iBook replacements.
If nothing else January 2007 is going to be an interesting time to be a Mac user.

Could all the "secret" windows displays etc just be this:

Beginning today, customers can pre-order a copy of the band's new double album, "Stadium Arcadium" for $19.90 to be downloaded on May 9 when it is released. Fans that pre-order the double album will receive a download of the new single, "Dani California" immediately at the time of the pre-order. On May 9, fans participating in the pre-order will also receive additional iTunes bonus content, including an exclusive audio interview with the band, a video chronicling the making of "Dani California" and a full color digital booklet.

Naw, Apple wouldn't dedicate the windows of their stores to a band...unless they were an iBand...that people would buy...

Unless the band is The Beatles.Which by happenstance. The judges decision comes out May 8th.

I just got some inside information. Don't ask me where I got it, because i'm under oath not to tell.

The MacBooks are going to be extremely dissapointing to us. And by "Us" I mean, all the people that have been looking at rumors and such.

They will start at $1099, with a 1.5Ghz Core Solo.

All Models will have Integrated Graphics.

I go to the University of Minnesota - Duluth, and at our campus bookstore, they really push the macs here, and I LOVE IT! We got a macbook pro the the first day they were available. We also got one of those lovely intel iMacs. And we carry a decent amount of mac software here too. It's just really nice looking in through the display window... and there sit some beautiful macs, and what is funny is some guy had his winblows laptop sitting on the counter which was seriuosly like 3-4 inches thick right next to the macbook pro... all i have to say is, i think he was advertising for the macbook pro :)

Not just current iBook users. My wife uses a Thinkpad and has been looking for a PC laptop, small and light but with everything built in, very fast, and has to be able to run a Windows scientific program. The Macbook 13 in fits all her requirements, no PC laptop does (they're too big or heavy, or don't have built in DVD, or are too slow, etc.)

I guess so, but sometimes the giants showcase there hardware there.

However to showcase the hardware you need to be demoing the software and I think Apple are better off doing that with showcasing the capabilities of the 17" MacBook Pro rather than the new Consumer level MacBook.

I'm undecided.

Starting a bit early aren't we? The pattern continues...you all get yourselves all worked up for a blockbuster product that Apple never intended in the first place with your juiced up specs and low price points, and then some complain that Apple is holding some kind of grudge against them. This isn't the least bit surprising...just look at the Mac Mini (1.5Ghz Solo w. integrated graphics)

Powermax out of 12" PBs?

For what it's worth I called the apple reseller Powermax yesterday about purchasing the 12 inch powerbook and the person I spoke with said they can NOT get anymore from apple. Someone else may want to call to confirm but that is what I was told...

That's what most of us have been expecting....

and by the way....I got information that the iPod would be discontinued...don't ask, just believe:D

<img snipped> Ok really though, I think this is it. The big one. Powerbook G5's THIS TUESDAY FTW!!!

 :) Made me laugh.

If this really does happen, Apple really is slowly walking away from announcing everything during a Macworld keynote. That's an understandable plan, at some point the stevenote would get stale, but what will our leader Steve show us if all the cool stuff is already hitting the market?

Being a faithful, I enjoyed the brainwashing. :D We shall prevail!!!

Add another person to the list from the Cities, I'm looking for a light weight replacement for my 17" PB =)

I love my iBook. But I bought my G3 three years ago in August, got it replaced with a G4 02/05 thanks to the logic board issue, and now I'd really like something that has a superdrive, more screen real estate, and that can play Second Life worth a damn. ;)

The problem you guys are missing is that unlike Windows the GPU plays a very central roll in the overall performance of OS X. It goes WELL beyond just gaming.

OS X in 2001...

OS X in 2002\2003...

OS X in 2004...

More and more of OS X's graphics subsystem has been moved onto the GPU over the years. Putting in a half ***** GPU into a system is going to hurt performance. Even more so with 10.5 when Apple finally turns on Quartz 2D Extreme.

PS- Graphics taken from http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars/13 (Hosted on my FTP site as not to steal bandwidth. I highly recommend the read.)

PPS- You will also see where VRAM comes into play. This is why I opted for the 256 system. If they had a 512 I would have snatched that up instead.

With the introduction of Bootcamp I thought it would be wise to make sure every Mac competes well amoungst their PC peer markets - and no seperate graphics card seems to hurt that for the lowest end...

Could be worst.... Intel Core Solo 1.45GHz with GMA900/32MB. ;-)

As much as I hate to admit it, thats kinda what I expected. I am suprised they couldnt get the price point down to $999 (I didnt think the LCD and the case w/ KB/trackpad would add $400 vs a Mini). If all the CPUs in there are Solo (1.5, 1.66) it will indeed be very disappointing. No high end MB or low end MBP leaves a big hole in the market. I might as well go buy some crap Dell laptop that has a duo 1.66 and a decent video card. I'd almost consider a refurb MBP if it weren't for the problems we saw out of the gate - i might consider one again in a few months.

FWIW, SiliconAddict, the Core arch. isnt that bad for OSX in terms of FSB speeds... the CPU - MCH BW is 5.3GB/s, the BW from the MCH to the memory is 10.6GB/s so there is plenty of "extra" bandwidth between the GMA950 logic and the memory that wont slow the CPU's memory access down. Yea its not like a discrete video card, but what can you do.

My god, we are a gullible bunch, aren't we? ;-)

We have one guy telling us that they're discontinuing a best selling model (12"PB) and another one telling us they're discontinuing the best selling electronic item since the TV. And we're actually beliving it!
