I have the issue as well, and I even went as far as disabling SIP so i could delete the folder containing the macos update from /Library/Updates thinking it was corrupted and make it start over vs resume. Didn't fix it that's when I found this thread. I had issues installing updates from the app store as well, which all but Xcode have been updated now. Xcode is still in progress of being updated.

I had no problem upgrading to Big Sur public release from the beta on my test machine earlier today, but sill no joy on the upgrade on my Catalina machines.

I will just let this run its course, it will resolve sooner or later. Big Sur is a very good OS.

While I don't see myself ever relinquish abandon the platform of which I've always been a great fan since the first Mac OS X iteration, I have given up on using certain apps the platform bids, such as iPhoto / the Photos app. Reason: extremely unreliable updates that would eat up thousands of my photos, as well as reassign keywords from one random image to another.

Apple Mail: same story - over the years, it has gobbled up and deleted tens of thousands of my incoming and outgoing emails (stored offline mostly, but online on occasion, too), drafts, archives, whole postboxes, etc. A lot of things of mostly sentimental and occasionally practical value have waned into thin air, thank you, Apple!

The Notes app: same story, although it appears to be more stable in that regard today than it was between updates from .Mac to MobileMe to iDisk to iCloud. Still, to this day it is as choke full of formatting bugs as ever.

…and now this. Come on, Apple! Enough of this rubbish!

I fixed mine by doing this....

SOURCE

The problem comes down to the installer looking to the new production SUS url. Apple just made the production SUS catalog available. The new URL is

New Big Sur Production SUS URL =

https://swscan.apple.com/content/ca...n-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

Big Sur Beta SUS URL =

https://swscan.apple.com/content/ca...n-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
Did you had to do any additional steps? restart the machine etc?

Any value in finding and somehow deleting the 12.8GB software update file and trying to start the process all over again? Probably end up in the same place but figured I'd ask!

found a workaround.
Step 1: post a screenshot of the error message you get on this forum (this is very important)
Step 2: restart your mac
Step 3: update!

And if step 3 fails please go through the whole process again.

Glad its not me. All apps were beach balling. What really ticks me off is that it downloaded the full update then everything slowed down just so it could fail. Then the entire computer was slow. At least I know CCC works so I will be purchasing it when my trail is up just waiting to see if they have any black Friday deals on the license.
I had the same issue. I got worried something was borked, but it finally came back. Maybe if I had disconnected from the Internet it would have been happier.

The apple support system status says the Installation Failed problem is fixed...it is not. I am still getting the error message.
