Got to 4 gigs which is farther than I ever got before (I never even got it to start) and it seems to pick up where it leaves off which is good...

Huh, not even close.
I use win10 and OS X every day. trust me. xD win10 is imho the best windows but OS X is great in compare to that
When they stop stepping into crap like this SNAFU then I'll change my mind. And FTR windoze sucks. and Apple is starting the show signs of lackluster attention to detail.

I got that too. Updated Safari and after it installed, I was able to kick off the Big Sur download.
Same, just now. I can't see how it would be connected, but....not looking a gift horse in the mouth! It's going slow, and not positive it will go all the way through, but it's nice not to see the error right away anymore!!!

I suspect that this error really isn't an error, so much as Apple had to reset their rollout process but was not able to reset the part that "hides" the update option from appearing to those in the US or other parts where the update hasn't been rolled out yet. Which is why it's working fine for those in the EU and not in the US. I assume it'll work for folks in the US around midnight PST, but that's just my hunch.

For the life of me I cannot BEGIN to understand why it won't finish once it actually starts. Do they want to just keep torturing folks?

Mine was failing on the west coast, but continues to download while connected to Germany VPN via mullvad.

edit
i did the clear cache suggested by Skb3735 and that got things downloading again off the VPN so let's see how that goes.
update here - it failed again after clearing my cache. i'm back on VPN connected to Germany and it's downloading again.

Welp... nothing's working.
I ran "sudo softwareupdate --reset-ignored" ... nothing.
Ran it again, and then reset Preferences, and that got downloading started...
Only to see it crap out again after 3.5gb.
Nothing working now. I'm convinced that any "fixes" that end up "working" are just coincidences. If you happen to hit the server at the right instant, it'll start downloading. And if you're lucky enough, it'll finish and install.
Apple seems to have screwed the pooch this time around. Someone'll lose their job over it, or at least get a lashing for it. And by tomorrow, all will probably be well.

Just spent 50 minutes on the phone with Apple tech support. After exhausting all the standard troubleshooting steps, my technician contacted a senior advisor. She was told that Apple is aware of the issue, is working to fix it, and that I should try again in 24 hours. This is as of 4:50 pm Mountain Time on 11/12/2020.

Guess I'll go back to obsessively checking if Arizona's election results are posted yet for the next 24 hours...
You do know that tomorrow is Friday the 13th!
