Install was went great for the first half hour... which was about as long as it said it would take. But now the progress bar has been at this point for AN HOUR.

Not stoked to turn off my computer in the middle of a OS install but Jesus.... what the hell is this updates problem...

Finally got it to download around 7 pm; I've updated the Mac Pro and two laptops since. No issues this evening, but I have a handful of laptops to update tomorrow; I'll probably run into some kind of issue.

Hard resets and reboots every few minutes after installing Big Sur, worst update I remember. I’m shocked how unstable it is.

Welp, finally got it downloaded, but the installer hangs at "12 minutes remaining." I let it sit there for over an hour.

I tried without an internet connection, and of course it gets to "12 minutes remaining" then immediately throws a dialog saying that an internet connection is required. 🤬

Finally done after a bit of headaches clearing all those broken files. Glad my system wasn't bricked I was scared there for a minute.

Has anyone not just downloaded but managed to install successfully? My download completed, followed the onscreen installation process and now I'm staring at a black screen with nothing happening. Been like this for 30-45 minutes.

Help!
I am having the same issue...the apple white line goes about 95% it seems and just stays

What install method you guys using: upgrade from existing OS or nuke and fresh install ? Planning on doing the latter but can't remember the app that allows creating a boot disk. :/

So after waiting patiently for 50 mins I just restarted the mac and boom there it goes....so if you are stuck at the apple bar being close to done, just reboot...(I HOPE THAT WORKS FOR YOU!!)

This worked for me when I got the error:
a. I navigated to System Preferences - Users & Groups - Login Items
b. I removed (-) my VPN (not just the checkbox, remove it)
c. Restarted iMac
d. Restarted upgrade
Everything installed fine. Your milage may differ.

Failed download here too, if i let the machine lock or sleep it doesn't detect the keyboard on wake.
Fantastic, 4 reboots in the last 30 mins to browse the web!!!!

Do they not expect demand or what, idiots.

Apple this morning released macOS Big Sur to the public, and since the software went live, it has had extremely long download times that have prevented many from being able to install it.

macos-software-update-issue.jpg

Even those who have made progress through the download have run into problems where the software downloading process is suddenly interrupted and must be restarted. Others have reported being able to download the update and then having the installation fail. Apple's site appears to be having some major issues due to the number of people attempting to download the update at once.

In addition to these Big Sur download problems, Apple's developer site is also down at this time, and as a result, some third-party apps are unable to be opened up at this time.

An error occurred while installing the selected updates

It's not clear what's causing the problem. It could be that the macOS Big Sur downloads are failing due to a developer site issue or the developer site could be failing under the strain of macOS Big Sur demand, but it is clear that those hoping to get the new software should hold off until things are more stable.

Apple's System Status page is listing an issue with macOS Software Updates and says that the problem is "currently being investigated."

Hi, I had this problem… I uninstal ESET Cyber Security Pro and the problem dissapear. Hope this will help somebody.

Finally got it to download by searching “macOS Big Sur” in the Mac App Store and downloading from there.

Installed tonight. Went smoothly, took about an hour, roughly. Only hiccups were having to re-enable some permissions and whatnot to get everything back up and running, but overall no major issues so far.

I’m using a 2019 i9 15’ MBP. Davinci Resolve works fine, Premiere Pro CC works fine, though it needed a little bit of “settling in “ time the first time I launched a project with it.

Speaking of pro media creation apps, I find they tend to launch a little faster with Big Sur. Rebooting also seems to be much quicker, even with all my crazy studio peripherals connected, which is surprising to say the least.

I’ll let you guys know if I find any glaring issues, but for a first release version, things seem rather stable and workable.

I never did get it to update via the system preferences. I wound up downloading the link from install.log to get InstallAssistant.pkg and running that.

Successfully installed macOS Big Sur on my 16" MacBook Pro. It took about 30 mins to download and another 30 mins to install—a few hiccups here and there, especially as spotlight was indexing my HD. But once spotlight finished indexing, my computer has been getting smoother.

Appart from the installation fiasco on my wife's laptop, Big Sur has been ok so far. The issues I've had:

  1. VMWare Fusion requires a (paid) upgrade.
  2. The ASIX AX88179 driver still needs an update. The 2.18 driver that's available requires you to boot into recovery and explicitly allow ASIX to sign kexts.
  3. After a TM backup, I sometimes find Safari unable to load web pages and "unmount" eating 100% of the CPU. This can last for a few minutes, or until I get impatient and power-cycle the machine.
#2 on the list is particularly galling. The entire purpose of a developer beta program is to allow developers to have their **** together by launch day. Developers who don't are beyond stupid.

EDIT:

It turns out that they do have a driver.... beta now.

It requires you to boot into recovery and turn off system integrity protection. That's a hard no.

Stuck at this screen for more than an hour, can anybody share thoughts on what to do next?
The software seems 100% downloaded. For me also, the progress bar moved till 90% mark for 100% download as in the screenshot and then the Big Sur installation screen came up to start installation, in about a minute after that.

Were you using any VPN or something? Follow the normal process and probably try again.

I am running into the same issue. The update is stuck @12.18GB for one hour, I am following the normal process(non VPN) and tried more than three times. It doesn't work, any idea???
