UPDATE 11/12/20 – This article is for yesterday’s Big Sur BETA install problem. If you are having problems downloading the new Big Sur update or full installer I have a new article on the issue. It’s for the Installation failed an error occurred while installing the selected updates error.

mrmacintosh.com/big-sur-installation-failed-an-error-occurred-while-installing-the-selected-updates/

Almost immediately after macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 (20B28) was released, I started to see reports of install issues. This was only happening on T2 Macs that need a BridgeOS update. A BridgeOS update is included and required with almost every combo, delta and full installer upgrade or install. Below is the 11.0.1 RC2 Install error.

The problem comes down to the installer looking to the new production SUS url. Apple just made the production SUS catalog available. The new URL is

New Big Sur Production SUS URL =

https://swscan.apple.com/content/ca...n-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

Big Sur Beta SUS URL =

https://swscan.apple.com/content/ca...n-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

The production URL does NOT include the required BridgeOS update needed for the Big Sur RC2 installer to continue.

Continues here...

I'm going on day #2 with Big sur on a late 2015 27 inch iMac. Everything seems good here. Just waiting on one or 2 apps to be updated to big sur support. the main one is in beta already, and should be released anytime now. The other is Onyx, and that is usually a delayed release with each new release.

Just tried again, different system, and within seconds, FAILED. *sigh*

And 'fifth time is the charm', the first system I tried to update, just within the compatibility limits, downloaded without a pause, is installing right now. Whatever Apple did to remove the logjam on downloads worked. From comments here, I expected it to dropout, but the download was fine. Yea hah!!!

Tangent: Wish I lived near big water.

download it without a fuss .
First weird bugs install
1. an error occur , restart and install it again
2. when left it sleep, green screen, panic kernel.

** if you normal user don't install yet

Now up and running Big Sur. The installation itself took a bit less than 45 minutes once initiated. I waited until I had everything backed up and ready.
how did u that ?
i have tried several times , in softwares updates , but when i tried to reinstall it didnt works for me.

wheres your location ? do you downloaded through vpn or ?

I'm in Eastern Washington state. No VPN, just downloaded directly, yesterday evening. It took patience and several tries (see earlier posts) before it was fully downloaded to my computer - a late 2014 iMac. Once the download process settled down I had two or three pauses in the download but no further breaks after about 8 GB, total about 45 minutes to download.

The installation also took about 45 minutes this afternoon, and I've had zero problems since it completed and I began to use my computer as normal.

In Toronto, Canada. Just finished installing Big Sur. I was going to do yesterday but after seeing all the issues, waited until this morning. Fortunately was a smooth process for me - both downloading, and the installation process. Took about 30mins installing on my 2016 13" MBP, and never hung at all / no error messages.

So far everything normal.

I was able to download and install last night on my 2016 13in. MBP. 8GB RAM..First take: A noticeable lag overall. Examples:When I click on a file in finder to rename there is about a 1 second delay before I can edit the filename. Opening and minimizing an app - its more of a stutter instead of a smooth transition. Anyone else having a similar experience?

Just tested on a late 2015 27 inch iMac, 32 GB RAM, no delay in finder clicking to rename. Haven't noticed any animation stuttering either, in fact, it feels smoother than Catalina was in some respects, and Catalina had become quite stable for me near the end.

Good to hear! I'm going to plan on doing a clean install during the holidays.

I was getting the repeating error message last night. I rebooted and went to bed.

This morning I updated my 2017 iMac and 2016 Macbook Pro and it all went smooth as silk.

Slightly off topic, but still a valid question x2

My new M1 MBA arrives midweek I assume it will want to update its OS when setting up?

Does it ship with Catalina or Big Sur ?

I have no experience of either OS as my 2011 MBP runs High Sierra.

Hope you folk get your OS upgrade sorted.

Should be shipping with Big Sur.

Shouldn’t cause any issues - it should pick up right where it left off - but I don’t blame you. I’ll let mine go for awhile and see what happens this time. I can always use my old MB Air as a backup while i unwrangle this mess.
Interested in your updates. I'm hesitant to install on my only machine, which is used for dissertation research.

I got it installed!

After the reboot it took a half hour or so, and eventually worked.

This morning I installed it on an old MacBook Air 11”, and it worked fine. I did have to reboot once AFTER the install because my network drives were not showing up in finder (and I couldn’t manually connect, even though one share was clearly automatically connected due to it being a startup item, and I could tell that it was accessible outside of finder). That problem went away after a reboot.

And no noticeable problems on the MBP upgrade that was causing me grief last night.

I wonder if the time machine will clone the new MBA M1 if the back up was done on High Sierra. I would imagine it would otherwise there will be issues for many users.
It should work fine. I've never had issues restoring from a Time Machine backup from an older OS to a new OS. But just in case, I always have a full, bootable clone of my current OS before doing anything.
