macOS Golden Gate 27.0 Beta 4 - What's New?

If you can't provide a screenshot, can you describe what additional icons you're seeing? I don't see any new ones, compared to Tahoe or even Sequoia. Are you sure you can't disable them in System Settings?

The only Apple menu icons I have are: Siri, Control Centre, Scripts, Battery, Wifi, and Keyboard. I can disable all of those except the Control Centre itself, I think.

I'm only able to see 1 conversation in Messages — cant see the full list of people I'm texting.

WHAT?

Edit: Ehh .. nevermind... just have to expand the window. Still annoying.

Did the translate app disappear for anyone else? when i bring up spotlight search (new siri) and search "translate" there is no app result

Yep, agreed. Other than my previously mentioned current disk space usage, I can't really complain with GG so far.

The most obvious thing for me is they are clearly refining and optimizing the code for speed. Can't speak for anything other than my M4 MacBook as this is my first M powered Mac, but Sequoia was meh, Tahoe felt like an ugly bloated slug, and so far GG gives me the impression of getting a brand new Mac with better hardware. It's just that noticeable.

Suddenly, I only get the Messages sidebar with message list if I make the window pretty large. If it's less than about a quarter of my MacBook screen, the sidebar goes away itself. Dislike..

My Ethernet adapter (Ubiquiti 10G) stopped working with this beta after working fine on the previous ones. Shows "Self-assigned IP" but giving it a static IP doesn't work either. 😫 (Macbook Pro 14 M4 Max)

I was under the mistaken impression that Golden Gate got rid of these types of icons. Then again, Apple only paid attention to the radius of application windows and not the rest of the windows in the OS, so that's on me for thinking that Apple was doing more than the bare minimum for this UI update.

I also might have been feeling extra spicy when I booted up DB4 because pre-greed Pixelmator doesn't display icons in drop-down menus in Sonoma, so when I switched from working in Sonoma to working in Golden Gate, it was jarring to deal with the haphazardly applied icons.

While I'm ranting to the wind about the menubar in Golden Gate, as CrabQueen Inc. does, I still can't believe that clicking the date and time in the menubar activates widgets rather than a calendar like Windows. A poster in another thread made the argument that Big Sur was Apple's worst update, not Tahoe. There are days where I'm inclined to agree with that person: most of Apple's worst impulses have sprung from Big Sur.

There’s still issues with text input - I think it’s mostly when auto-correct is triggered. The word renders in the wrong place (like 2-3 cm above the actual text).

The icons in menus were introduced in Tahoe. I don't think there's a way to remove them. Are they nonsensical?

They are mostly the kind of thing that you would see if there was a toolbar button with the same function.

The menus do seem to be a little wider, but not because of the icons. About the only bad thing is that the text is not aligned when some items have icons and others don't.
 
I've randomly been getting the floating Siri shortcut on the screen – either bottom-left corner or elsewhere. But it quickly disappears.

Feels like it's related to this UI (for the record, I don't have it manually enabled).

Just me that's missing the Spotlight (now Siri search?) menu bar button?

I've looked in Settings and there's no option to add this I can see
 
My MacBook just gave up on life 😭. It’s an MP M1 Pro running DB4 and the power button doesn’t work. It will not boot into recovery assistant. Please help, wise macrumors 5 Digiters. 🙏

You're better off starting a new thread unless it's definitely related to DB4 (which doesn't seem likely).

Hold the power button for 6 seconds, release, wait for a few seconds, try and boot up holding the power button down until options appear.

(I'm assuming it has some battery power!)

I was running into an issue on Beta 3 on my MBP (M1 Pro, 2021) where launchd would continuously peg 2 CPU cores and write gigabytes of data per minute to the SSD. Seems to be fixed so far on Beta 4!
