And that's just one of the reasons why dedicated ports are better than USB-C+dongles. If you think different you are probably eating babies.

My external SSD stopped working on both M1 Mac Mini and M1 MBP. Doesn't mount, doesn't show up in System Report or Disk Utility. When I plug it into a Windows laptop I can see its partition scheme in Disk manager, so it seems like the drive itself is fine.

UPDATE: tried a lower graded cable, now the SSD works but only at USB 2 speeds. Oh well.

I can attest to this. I thought it was just my CalDigit hub going bad.

I have a M1 Pro w/ a Caldigit TS3 plus and I run in clamshell mode.. (2) 4k monitors.. The display was kinda flakey until I upgraded to 12.01 but still I have had (2) issues this week, (1) I couldnt get out of the screen saver mode, had to reboot. The other time all my open windows suddenly disappeared and i was left with just the background desktop..

I hate .0 releases ..

Some good news..

Other than the display issues, everything has been perfect, it laughs at all my workloads.. I haven't gotten the processor above 20%.. (I'm glad I canceled my M1 Max order..saved $700)

Welcome to the future, where you are forced to use expensive adapters and ridiculously expensive hubs to do just about anything and a software update can just break them without warning... At which point you are of course told to just buy a new, even more expensive one. Just to do things that used to be built into the computer.
Forced ? Outside of the software causing issues, which presumably have a fix down the line- one could just not purchase such a system if that is not what they wish to do, you know making informed decisions about a purchase…

I shift from a 2013 iMac to a 24" one and I have had nothing but issues with the USB3 hub and connected drives and it was happening in big sur. Not unusual for all drives to drop out during sleep, wake, whenever it feels like. I did report during beta but not replied or fixed so cannot be bothered any more.

Monterey should be recalled or fixed on Monday! All of these issues were known during the beta phase and Apple just ignored it. My third party bluetooth mouse is not working anymore. Screensaver is not loading pictures from the last vacation. Shame on Apple. Hopefully we do not have wait 3-6 months for update. Will never upgrade again. Steve Jobs quality finish is gone. Time to get rid off Tim&Co in the management.

Do you not realize that .0 is not a finished product? My son, who came of computer-use age during the pandemic’s learn-from-home year of school, now refuses to use the Magic Trackpad because it was so buggy with his 2020 Intel MacBook Pro for over six months. He demanded a non-Bluetooth mouse and is now scarred for life because Apple couldn’t get their act together for over six months until they finally fixed their Bluetooth issues. Unless you are prepared to deal with bugs for months, don’t upgrade to a new version until the next year.

On my new 16 with 12.0 everything worked as expected. With 12.1 it takes a LONG time to enumerate and mount drives after boot.

And my usb c ssd drive won’t mount if it uses a thunderbolt cable but does with a 3.2 cable. No speed difference but there’s definitely something broke Vs big sur.

I think a key difference between Microsoft and Apple is that Apple never tests their products with third party hardware. That's why they finally came out with the beta program - so users could tell Apple what doesn't work. I do agree with the consensus that while Apple typically doesn't feel obligated to help with other companies' products, this is entirely Apple's fault, for making laptops that force us to use these docks.

And just an update, there's definitely an issue - not just mounting but also erasing. Failed multiple times on the M1/Monterey, worked the first time on the Intel/Big Sur. But am using the CalDigit's so will try doing the firmware update on them when I get a chance.

My M1 MBA is not charging when connected to a HP Display with built in PowerDelivery Dock. Worked well with Big Sur. It works fine with my OWC Thunderbolt dock.

I plugged in my Anker PowerExpand+ 7-in-1 USB-C PD Media Hub (A8346), connected to an Anker Powerline III Flow 100w Power Cable, connected to an Anker Nano II 65w GaN charger.

I don't have any flash drives to plug in to test though, and it seems to be working just fine.

The Caldigit TS3+ at home works just fine, with two WD externals, an LG DVD-RW, and a Samsung Odyssey G7 plugged into it.

I'm on the 12.1 beta, if that matters.

As an update, the M1MBP was plugged into my hub all weekend without issue.

Some Mac users who upgraded to macOS Monterey this week are experiencing problems getting USB hubs and other USB-based devices to work properly with their machines, based on scattered online reports.

There have been several reports on Reddit, Apple's Developer Forums, and Apple's Support Communities about the issues. In some cases, users say the the USB 3.0 ports on their hub no longer work since upgrading to Monterey, while HDMI, USB-C, and other hub ports continue to work as expected.

In other user reports surfacing online, the USB hubs fail to work at all. Some of the problems even relate to Apple certified hubs. Reddit user Flyersny81 relates their experience:
In other cases, the USB hubs work except for the power delivery port. For some, it's the additional connectivity provided by external displays that no longer works, with the power delivery affected in particular. From Apple's Developer Forums:
Many of the reports are from owners of M1-powered Macs, but not all. Some users have reported similar issues on Intel Macs. Based on user discussions, USB issues were reported in early beta versions of Monterey, suggesting this could be due to a legacy bug that Apple has still not patched.

As such, the problems appear to be evident in all versions of Monterey, including the latest 12.0.1 version. Suffice to say, anyone who has yet to upgrade to Monterey and relies on a USB hub is advised to hold off upgrading until Apple issues a fix.

I called Apple Support and they still have no fix. The technician told me to downgrade my MacBook back to Big Sur. I cannot find Big Sur on the App Store. Does anyone know where I can get the Big Sur OS ? Thank you

So glad this isn't just me - I'm on 12.0 and have a Caldigit TB3 Plus Dock into a M1 Macbook Air - I have hard drives into the back of the dock in the USB A and USB C ports and an external 5K monitor - upon plugging in the computer to the dock the whole thing freezes up and the monitor is on but doesn't work and through process of elimination determined that if I unplug the time capsule hard drive I have plugged into the USB A port the whole thing works perfectly. The second that thing is attached it goes haywire. Hope Apple fixes ASAP, this is such a stupid bug.
Similar issue with my setup. I’ll try removing my external drives to see if that helps!

Just set up my new MBP 16 this weekend and my USB hard drive takes a unusually long time to mount after a restart and my display calibrator doesn't work at all. Datacolor says the calibrator problem will be fixed by Apple in 12.1 so hopefully we don't have to wait too long for that.

I was fine all along with Big Sur, and even the initial macOS 12 build, but then on the current macOS 12.0.1 build I'm having all sorts of issues with drives disconnecting overnight. I think when my M1 MBP either goes to sleep or wakes from sleep?

I'm using a Belkin Thunderbolt Dock 3, and again, have loved it since I got it last November. I like this dock because it's got five USB 3 ports along with the other usual suspects. Most docks I've seen only have maybe 3 or 4.

no power coming into the USB-C port of my daughter’s MacBook Air after install. Apple Store tells me they haven’t heard that being a reported issue LOL. Totally bricked because my daughter didn’t know to wait.

It's now getting worse Takes forever to enumerate drives, and mounting an encrypted external drive takes ~1-2 minutes/device. The only thing that seems to work is to force-power off the machine, power off everything else, boot it with nothing attached, and then plug everything in one at a time. Sitting here at 10 minutes after booting and still don't have some drives spun up. This is unusable in the present state. It got MUCH worse with 12.0.1, so bad that I'm trying to figure out how to downgrade to 12.0.0.

Anyone know how to do that?

I was having zero issues when I was using the beta for months. I had no issues until 12.0.1 came out.

Anyone having any issues with 12.1 beta?
I didn't notice any issues with 12.0.1 but I am having USB connectivity issues with a mouse and a USB DAC after installing 12.1 beta. Anker USB hub.

Nope, 12.1 doesn't fix it, though it might be a bit better. Anyone know how to downgrade to 12.0?

In my case it was my keyboard used with the hub, it would not work using Command>R or option to get to recovery or choose a drive when restarting. I had to reroute other lines to get my keyboard hooked directly to my Late 2014 Mac mini, My mouse works fine through the hub. I prefer USB because I had trouble using a dongle with a trackball mouse and I do not like keyboards that interfere with Bluetooth and the batteries run down without warning. As for the Bluetooth I use it for my hearing aide receiver, Phonac Compilot II, like headphones, only better.
