I really don’t understand how Apple changing the default (when you can still turn it off) is a reason to keep an older device? And I didn’t know that a settings toggle default changing overrode the reasoning of “well, it still works fine” in terms of keeping a device.

The criticisms in this thread over the default setting of a toggle being changed don’t make much sense.
Even Apple themselves admitted to it potentially spitting out “unexpected results”, as well as inaccurate ones.

Considering this then, don’t you think Apple Intelligence being opt-in –as the beta feature it unequivocally ismakes more sense than pushing it to everybody, THEN having people opt out?

Show me where Apple collects data from AI request.

I found the attached in macOS (not sure if it's the same doc on iOS and iPadOS, etc).

Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > About Siri, Dictation & Privacy > Siri, Dictation

Apple is becoming the new Microsoft.

This should be opt-in.
It has been this way for a little while now. Try setting up a new iPhone without Apple pay or Siri enabled. You get regular red dot reminders and pop up nag screens to “finish setting up your iPhone” even when you select that you don’t want to use those. Or the intense advertising for Apple TV shows they want you to watch - I can’t count how much the new severance series was pushed down my throat, to the point of me going from looking forward to it, to already being tired enough of it that I haven’t bothered to watch it yet.

oh no. all the whiners are gonna start whining about "AI" being on their phone as if its any different than any other stupid update or emoji
Whining about whiners… nice!

I do think that the space this takes up is a bit more significant than emoji. Although whether it is enabled or not probably doesn’t impact tbjs.

iOS 18.3 did this too. This is upsetting; I was previously very happy with Apple for making this opt-in. Seems they're going back on that.

Some of us DO NOT want this. Please respect our wishes.

Ok, but you can opt out. This is for people who are less technical and didn’t even know that this existed. I’m sure you will be able to turn it off easily.

Don’t like it? Turn it off. Easy.
But does turning it off also get rid of the stuff that takes extra space on the drive? If it is not turned on it the first place, then I don't think anything is installed to do with it. I have gone back to Sonoma, the only problem is, it decided to download Sequoia before i had chance to stop it, I think it has as it now keeps asking me to upgrade if I go into settings.

I don't want this AI stuff, I have no need for it and getting fed up with it being pushed all the time and not just by Apple

My guess is, because they think they are such geniuses over there, that they think interaction with Apple Intelligence is low because they didn’t turn it on automatically for users, not because people don’t want it so turned it off. No, it couldn’t be that! Our customers LOVE Apple Intelligence! They just need it turned on by default so they can revolutionize their lives and see what they’re missing!

not unexpected. Apple previously turned on all iCloud features automatically and periodically reset them to On during major version upgrades.
Really? I have not had that but then I don't keep my Mac connected to Apple ID account, the only time I use my Apple ID is to grab something from the store and that is not that often. Then I do get a notification, in the settings saying, start using Icloud, but as soon as I sign out it goes.

Obviously this is being done to enable siphoning more data for training.

Really bad news, as the performance impact and battery impact on iOS are huge. And it happens even if you turn it off after downloading the models.

Will have to pay attention and stop the download as soon as the phone restarts after the update, if that is possible indeed.

Not while using my old iPhone XR or my current iPhone 16. If Siri is off on the phone and then I attach (my cars do NOT have wireless CarPlay capability) the phone to the car, I get a message on my car display that I have to turn on Siri to use CarPlay. I don’t have to use Siri but it has to be on.
Hmmm. Interesting. Like yours, my car is wired Car Play enabled and I have Siri turned off on my 16 Plus. Car Play works fine. If that ever changes then I will no longer require an iPhone. But that’s still kind of weird.

yeah, but I'm signed in with my Apple ID. Every upgrade, Mac/iPhone/iPad, I have to check if iCloud Photos, Messages in iCloud, iCloud Drive, or whatever new iCloud thing is turned on without my consent

interesting

I've never had that issue

everything about iCloud and syncing between devices does certainly often seem esoteric

I may have just been lucky

it's not a problem if you want to use iCloud, but I don't except for calendar and reminders (both of which are non-essential data for me so doesn't matter if they get lost or messed up)
