Ok, it's finally October, so where is the official MBP announcement? Or will it be an announcement of an announcement?

Didn't you get the notice? As a follow-on to today's announcement of automatic OS update downloads, Apple will start automatic deliveries of new Mac computers, whether you want one or not. As an added convenience, they will also charge the cost to your registered credit card. Deliveries will be via driverless Uber, and you will also be charged for the cost of an Uber trip from your nearest port-of-entry.

Apple reasoning before the iOS era: "If Microsoft would do it, it must be a wrong idea".
Apple reasoning in the iOS era: "If Microsoft would do it, we must do it twice and we'll get twice the income".

I don't mind it, since newer updates have more security patches.

At least it's not as annoying as Micro$oft where if you have something like Windoze 7, you sleep and wake up and it's automatically updated to Windoze 10.

Sorry if this is a stupid question as I've never upgraded from a previous OS before (still on Mavericks that came with my late 2013 retina MacBook as I don't like Yosemites design and much prefer Mavericks UI), but if I do upgrade, can I go back to Mavericks if I decide I don't like Sierra? As long as I back everything up? The features are really making me curious and tempted to give it a go. Also, to anyone who already has it, is Sierra's performance smoother and better overall than Mavericks? I heard Mavericks is still smoother which is also holding me off.

It isn't just about if it installs. Its about the assumption we all have the bandwidth, the hard drive space, and for that matter a computer with hardware to run it when they feel like downloading. Some don't. It should be optional. NOT an auto download!

I would dearly like to drop whoever in these companies thinks auto downloading is a good idea in an area with dial up. Yes that still does still exist. This would no doubt mean mass dropping Microsoft, Apple and Google workers together. Lets see how they like auto downloads when they do not have the cushy office with high speed internet.

But even then, they are at an advantage. There are not computer savvy people using computers, including Apple users, who have no idea about disabling an auto updater that for whatever reason is on. I didn't know when I went from Snow Leopard to Mavericks (the hardware can't go higher) that it was even there and on by default! And sure enough it was downloading updates for ITunes etc when I needed bandwidth elsewhere and the DSL couldn't handle it. For literally the same reason my Windows PC is forced to run on wireless metered: Its not just about what it installs but that it downloads it AT ALL when I need that bandwidth for work or streaming instead of letting me optionally go in and download it when I have time or bandwidth.

I may know how to fight it. But not everyone does and not everyone should be expected to.

Thanks for the "Encouragement" Apple.

Keep your beta software to yourself.

Everybody was griping about slow internet this morning, turns out four machines were all downloading it.

This is incredible! "Four machines" slowed down the internet for everybody? ;)

I always clone my existing hard drive (I use SuperDuper). You can always go back to that clone if you really don't like it. Even better, install it on either another partition on your drive or on an external USB drive and try it out that way.

24Gigs? yeah, that slows things down a bit, for everybody I have to listen to.

There's no reason to download it four times (or once, for that matter) anyway.

This is crap US infrastructure, not the Apple Campus.

Maybe somebody was watching porn, and they got interrupted.

I can't believe this is on the front page and the story about how Office and Adobe apps are hosed is buried: https://www.macrumors.com/2016/10/03/photoshop-office-2016-macos-sierra-fixes-in-works/

Beware.
That's kind of a given these days.

Those customers should be pissed that they are on a limited allotment from their ISP.

I have no choice but to have satellite Internet. Well, I do but it would be 1Mb/s. I get a daytime allowance of 30GB/month. Streaming is more or less impossible and an HD film watched before 11pm would use most of a weeks allowance. The last thing I want is any kind of automatic updating.

Yes, believe it or not, some people (like about 90% of the entire world) still don't have a superfast Internet connection.

Wonder if this will also download on its own onto "unsupported" macs. My 9,1 iMac isn't supported by Sierra. Last week I noticed Sierra was available for me to download from the MAS which I thought was strange.

Thanks! I think I'll install it on another partition. How is Sierra performance wise? Would you say its performance is as stable and smooth as Mavericks? I'm hoping it's even better, will get me past the flattened UI which I'm not a big fan of.

I've set up at least 5 new Macs within the past year or so (some at work and a couple at home). None of them have had automatic updates turned on by default. I turned it on for one of my home computers but some the others I use still have it off because I never turned it on.

Edit: I just checked and saw that I turned automatic updates on one of my work iMacs but never turned it on for the other one (and I've never turned it off, which means the default was off).

By default it's off. The system prompts you to turn it on after an unknown amount of time as a notification or after you sign into the AppStore.

there are satellite ISP providers that offer unlimited data. Maybe check out one of those?

If I was one of those customers on a limited allotment from an ISP and I didnt want Sierra, I'd be pissed.
Well then in that hypothetical situation why would you have automatic downloads enabled anyway?

Starting today, Apple is making the new macOS Sierra operating system available as an automatic download to customers running OS X El Capitan in order to encourage them to update.

Customers who have auto downloads enabled will see macOS Sierra start to download automatically, but it will not install without express user permission.

Apple shared the news with The Loop and says the update will only be downloaded on computers that meet the specs for macOS Sierra and have an adequate amount of storage space.Customers who do not want to upgrade to macOS Sierra can manually delete the update to keep from being prompted to do the install, and the download can be turned off by disabling automatic downloads. Disabling the feature can be done by going to System Preferences -> App Store and unchecking "Download newly available updates in the background."

Automatic downloads of macOS Sierra will be rolling out to customers over the next week.

FCPX has some glitches and the ScanSnap is downright busted.

As long as you don't have the MacOS box ticked it won't install with out a prompt from MacOS (X) /your consent.
There's nothing to tick that will force a new Operating System to install itself on the Mac. That only applies to system updates for the current OS you're on.

Thats pretty weird since all my fresh installs have the option on by default.

Annoyingly on my MBP, since installing El Capitan, the option keeps turning itself on. Now its become a routine to keep checking the option and forcing it off.

No it is not the same. Microsoft downloaded and upgraded your system to Windows 10 automatically. Apple is only downloading the file. Upgrading is still up to the user.

Another big difference is Microsoft kept all the old OS files, and had an easy downgrade option. For someone not so nerdy, downgrading Sierra to El Cap wont be so easy if they upgraded without knowing what they are getting themselves into.

I dont see the logic in what Apple are doing. If someone wanted to click and accept the OS update, surely they can be asked/nagged and then begin the download if they accept. An automatic download of an entire OS and then giving you the option seems backwards.

What, no Apple car? I'm shocked! Say it's not so,TC

Some are upset about iOS auto-update cause it will ruin their jailbreak and kick out pirated Apps as will.
I have four iPhones on 9.02 and 9.33 and an iPad on 9.02. Nice thing about being jaibroken on all is that it disables the automatic iOS update download.

Auto update does't work on Jailbroken devices. It will not even download an update.
