My Macs are getting old, but still work fine. Used the OS patch last year to install Monterey on the 2012 and 2013 MBP. If available, will do the same on my 2015 27" iMac. 99% of the time it works fine and not ready yet to buy something new.

While I too am surprised to see some of the Macs no longer supported, I think those that are crying that their Macs are now dead are a bit exaggerated. If you Mac currently boots and let you do work your Mac isn't going to stop working when Ventura goes live. It just means you won't get those ruin features. Your Mac still works.

Can you force or hack or something to make Ventura work on older macs?
I could imagine this working pretty much hassle-free on 2016 macbook pro’s since they are as related to 2017 models as is technically possible. Getting it to work on 2015s will likely be a challenge, though.

Proving “planned obsolescence” is a nebulous thing at best and is complete subjective. The EU interfering with this smacks of bureaucrats abusing their positions more than consumer protection. I hear that term bandied around here a lot and it has more to do with people who think that when they buy an Apple product they are entitled to it working forever versus a Dell or HP product that I never hear anyone claim “planned obsolescence “ about…EVER!
Politicians are elected to represent the people. The people are the consumers. Consumer protection therefore protects their electorate. It's actually admirable and a reason that warranties aren't **** like in USA.

Intel does a tick-tock release for their chips. 2017 pro used the chip that was the tock to the 2016's tick. If Apple can support the 2017 pro, they can support the 2016.

Apple sold the 2014 Mac Mini until 2018.

If you purchased it then, your machine got... 3 years of support.

That’s absolutely brutal.
In 2018, my local Apple store had the Mac Pro (2013) on display and the clerk showed me a Mac mini (2014). I laughed and asked how they could sell a 4 year old computer in their shop.

I have a hard time blaming the consumer for getting a product "late" in its lifecycle, but shame on Apple for pretending these ancient computers were real products.

Wow, I got my 2017 Macbook Air in Autumn 2018 and although I don’t use it as much, still thought it was OK for at least the next two OS updates. I’m not too fussed as I use my iPad a lot more than my iMac/Macbook these days but it still sucks. I take it the non supported machines will still receive security updates for a while?

Dropping support for the 2015 5K iMac is a crime. This machine is still plenty fast for pretty much everything. Hopefully there ends up being a hackintosh way to run it because I'm not ready to upgrade it yet.

My late 2015 iMac will have to go if I want the latest OS.
Thé issue is my late 2015 5K iMac is still performing very well on Monterey. It’s a shame to upgrade a machine that works absolutely fine without issues! I guess it’s Monterey for some time for me

Oh man, end of the road for my 2016 Macbook Pro. What a bummer.

Looks like my wife's 2017 Macbook is just squeaking by.

Time to say goodbye to my 2015” MacBook Pro. Harsh.
I had to replace the internal drive on my 2015 earlier this year when it died. I would have had a 2021 replacement, but after repeated delays I cancelled my order. Then my drive died.

Planned obsolescence.
My I7 2017 iMacs days are numbered.
Say what you will about Microsoft, but windows machine have a much longer life span. I have a 2011 PC that runs windows 10. I also have a 2010 iMac that was only supported for about 6 or 7 years. That is not long enough. Apple needs to do better. How green is a company that only supports their hardware for 6 years?

That is unacceptable. I like the new M2 MacBook Air, but not if it will only be supported for six years. It’s not worth it.

A reminder that, just because Apple releases new software from time to time, bar hardware failure the products you own will continue to work for many years to come.

I agree. I have a 2015 iMac running Big Sur and 2017 Macbook Air running Monterey. They are used for general web browsing, torrents and basically anything my iPad struggles with. After today, they are obsolete in terms of software updates but they still run flawlessly and I have no plan in replacing them anytime soon (unless of course the hardware fails).

Why are most in here are acting as if they can't run Monterey anymore or won't see any security updates for Monterey post Ventura release?

Apple is not dropping support entirely for non-Ventura compatible Macs just yet. You're "just" not getting Ventura.

Stop the hyperbole.

Your Mac doesn't die because it's stuck on Big Sur.

Big Sur got a security update less than a month ago. Even Catalina got one too even though it launched back in 2019.

Quit this update mania.

*Also. This is clearly an effort to speed up the move away from Intel machines. Once the M2 machines are out, you can easily grab any of the low-end M1 machines and get vastly better performance than most Intel Macs for just a few hundred dollars and Apple will most likely offer years and years of updates for those (in an effort to incentivise all Mac users to move to Apple Silicon).
I love when a Macs OS future dies, I love it! "I love it!"

It's at that point that I begin to "wrap up" the machine and start getting it all dedicated for what's going to be at it's 100% purpose.

I have 15 Macs that have dedicated purposes.

System 12.4 (Monterey) AND BEYOND!

TO ME? When they die (the OS) they FLY!!

IDK what you guys are doing with your Macs but you're probably using them wrong.
They are meant to LAST, I've had a recap and ALL using SSDs or FlashMemoryCards aka Poor Mans SSD for 68K machines and G3s

I'm telling you, when they stop updating it's THE BEST thing that can Happen. In the Apple world, it's basically Apple saying, OK we're DONE with this Machine, or Line of Machines...

And you can sit back (and unfortunately hassle with the Security Updates) but essentially start giving it it's final PURPOSE...

Laters...

🤷‍♂️

And I am using a 2010 6 core 3.46 Xeon Mac Pro which also runs extremely quickly on Monterey 12.2, and a 12 core 2.7 6,1 Mac Pro which is very fast. I have no intention of moving to Apple silicon.

I just ordered a 7,1 and I'm waiting for it to be built and delivered. Maybe it will be my last Mac.

Wow, there are going to be a lot of new OpenCore Patcher users this year lol.
I'm running macOS Big Sur on my 2012 Macbook Pro (the one with a CD drive 😂) just fine. You can add an SSD and even max the RAM to 16GB. Apparently my machine also can run macOS Monterey too. Seen YouTube vids of that. OpenCore Patcher is a blessing for the Mac community. Apple is being arbitrary at this point.

Oh, so Apple makes both my iPhone (SE) and my MacBook Pro (2016) obsolete at the same time? How considerate of them.
