macOS Ventura features newly added support for some of the most popular racing wheels, pedals, and shifters for use in racing games on the Mac, including Logitech's G920 and G29 racing wheels, according to Apple's developer website.

Apple also says that many additional Bluetooth and USB game controllers are supported on macOS Ventura, iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and tvOS 16. Among the new controllers supported are Nintendo's Joy-Cons, which can be used individually or in a pair as a singular controller, according to testing on iOS 16 by developer Riley Testut.

A new "buddy controller" feature on macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16 combines inputs from multiple game controllers into one so a friend can help you while gaming.

macOS Ventura is available in beta for registered Apple developers, with a public beta to follow in July. Apple says the software update will be released in the fall, bringing the expanded support for game controllers and racing accessories to all users.

For those curious, the G920 also works with Xbox, and the G29 works with PS4 and PS5.

Just going to stoke the fire, but EA owns the F1 series, Grid, Need for Speed, Burnout, Real Racing, and My Sims Racing.

Will be interesting if the next Tower type thing supports graphics cards, will show how serious Apple might be about winning over hardcore gamers/gamedevs.

It's nice that various controllers are now being supported by the OS. But the big big big million dollar question is: where are the damn games? What good is controller support if you don't have the games to use them with?
Well...if the necessary controllers aren't supported on the OS, games won't be made for them. This is the step that was necessary to get feature compliant with Windows for developers to consider making these games. It still likely won't occur very quickly, but at least its an option

That's a very good point. I have yet to see any new games out there. Especially when it comes down to racing games. :(

I have the G920 with my series X. Very good.
It's a solid wheel.

Not for you MrGimper, as I suspect you know this having one, but for those curious, the jump from a controller to a wheel is where most of the performance advantage comes from. It's like going from controller to keyboard and mouse in an FPS. Paying more gives you more immersion, but it will do little to make you a better driver.

Not until there's at least Proton support in macOS. No gamer is going to buy a Mac for gaming if it can't play everything in the Steam library.

I know. I've just wanted to game on the Mac for years and found it to be a frustrating experience, needing to resort to Windows to game. I've been holding out hope that gaming finally takes off on the Mac.

Here's to hoping that things begin changing in Ventura, and beyond to the next macOS.

Nothing "new", but Dirt 4, Dirt Rally, F1 (2017), Grid:Autosport, and Cassic Racers should all work.

However, with random wheel support and building on a previous rumor of acquisition, I should say that most of the flagship racing games are EA products.

Apple has been in and out of gaming for decades. I can't believe that any game manufacturer will believe that this effort by Apple is anything other than temporary. Apple has ceded gaming to the PC and after 14 to 18 months of no uptake Apple will forget it like it never happened. Sometimes Apple history of racing away from industries and users is its own worst enemy.

Not really a good point. They just announced this yesterday and it won’t be around for months. The game makers will now have a dev preview to write their games to if they want to or think it’s worth it. Can’t expect games to already be ready from everyone on a wwdc announcement

This news can only be seen as a positive that Apple is getting more serious about games by building foundational technologies to support developers. As MacOS marketshare grows and the hardware becomes more capable, developers may become more interested in devoting resources. They did insinuate that Metal 3 + a fanless 8 core M1/2 GPU can handle a 'AAA type' game ... but scaled down to 1080... better than nothing ... we will see.

In 2 or 3 years a lot of MacOS installed capacity will be made of computers with very decent GPU capabilities and this is bound to make MacOS more interesting for publishers.

Before it didn't matter what level of commitment Apple had, a wall of non existent GPU power made any gaming worthless. Well you can argue that Apple had no commitment as they designed the computers but that was a second or third level concern.
