Also, there is just far less info available at a glance on the homepage with this design. With the old design, I could scan 2-3 main headlines, a number of recent forum comments, and the Page 2 and Mac Bytes stories without scrolling at all. With the new design I see ONE main story, and a 'selection' of other stories on the right. That's it. This is a major step backwards.

That new shot still looks better to me.

You don't use an RSS reader? That's actually the best part of the re-design for me—full text in Reeder. I'll only come to the site if I want to comment.

I already commented on the feedback thread, so I'll just add one more ugh here.

Most people have widescreen monitors these days.

So why is the width so restricted now, I just have MASSIVE areas of blank white screen on either side.

Has it been done for the iPad ?

Why are you using your entire external monitor for one webpage? The point of having a large screen is to be able to have multiple windows on it without overlapping......

/just sayin'

That's why I have 2 monitors :)

I don't understand why we are moving backwards. All websites generally stretch the text to fill up the full width of your window

I don't understand why anyone would want to use the fluid layout. Optimum maximum line length for copy is 2-3 alphabets (52-78 characters). Anything above or below that is difficult to read. The article copy in the redesign is at pretty much the top end of that range. Why would you want to make it wider?

Also, for at least five years, the majority of new site designs have been fixed at a width around 960px. The new fixed-width design on this site is 1000px wide. If you keep your browser window at around 1100px wide, 99% of the internet will fit in the window without horizontal scrolling. If your screen resolution is too narrow for the site or you use your browser at full screen, you're providing a poor environment for the entire internet. I don't see how that's Macrumor's fault.

Yes, please tell people how to best set up their own computers and workflow. The best sites are the ones that are the most adaptable (macrumors used to be one, Amazon, etc.) Fixed width is lazy coding.

Great huh?

That's "Web Designers" for you, they think they know better than you do what you like and don't like. ;)

It might 'look' better, but the old site was far more functional. This one is now so narrow that it's constant scrolling.

No, I don't care for RSS. I use Read It Later for long articles I want to come back to, but honestly, I like viewing the web in its native form.

This, beyond that where is the negative positive on the page?

Actually this redesign is more befitting an Apple site.

I now realise the Apple site is correct and I'm using my monitor in the wrong way! ;)

Looks great!

An unintended side effect maybe, but this site now supports the Opera browser's Speed Dial feature better. Since the logo image is now a separate image, Opera can now locate it on the page and show the proper MacRumors logo instead of the full web site in miniature.

What happened to page 2 and where are the thumps up down ratings on articles? Looks nicer, but where is page 2?

The second design is much better than the first. If you disagree with that, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Former Page 2 content will go onto Mac or iOS blog respectively.

Seriously, has this change been done for the iPad / iPhone?

The new site seems to be 1000 pixels wide fixed.
Given these are the only products with this limited number of pixels across their screens in landscape modes.

Are desktop users (Mac's & PC's) now getting a poorer web browsing experience for the sake of iOS devices?

Yes, we all realize you are a self declared design expert.

My points stand. You're just talking without saying anything.
