Seriously, has this change been done for the iPad / iPhone?

The new site seems to be 1000 pixels wide fixed.
Given these are the only products with this limited number of pixels across their screens in landscape modes.

Are desktop users (Mac's & PC's) now getting a poorer web browsing experience for the sake of iOS devices?

Its a secret conspiracy to get you to buy one. So that you can browse on Macrumors and find it looking pretty and ooey gooey.

K.

MacRumors home page just got Facebookized

Am I the only one who's become intolerant down right allergic towards Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and every other "Look at ME!!!" social page that has nothing better to do but take your time away from reality...Am I the only one against it? I hate the way people freely commit to Facebook and let them browse through your personal life and most people are ok with it..

But when Apple is caught in the act of using data for something completely different they pull their heads out of their butts and start screaming like mad men!

Every game has a stupid Facebook connection built in, I swear if MacOS X 10.7 will have Facebook implemented as a core service then I'm sticking with 10.6...

Sorry but seriously guys... what's with the double standards here? It's ok for SOME people to know everything about you (Facebook really does), and some not?

I don't get it anymore

Yes, we all realize you are a self declared design expert.

My points stand. You're just talking without saying anything.

Those long lines of text are tiring to read and just poor use of monitor width. Yes, you can see more stories, but isn't that what the RSS feeds or scroll wheel on your mouse are for?

very nice site redesign. liking the reorganization to the header sections, fp mac blog, etc.

I'm gonna assume that everyone is kidding about this. The whole "too much white space on the sides" thing is a joke, right?

Did you guys also email Facebook, YouTube, CNN, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Ebay, Flickr, The New York Times, Apple, IMDB, The BBC or any of the other hundreds of thousands of other sites that are fixed width and lodge a complaint?

If you're running your browser window wider than 1200 pixels, you're doing it wrong.

Turn on the fluid option!

arn

I've done it now, using your hyperlink, but other people have said to turn it on and off at the bottom of the page, including the original post:

Where?

I gave a detailed opinion earlier.

The line lengths in the first example are terrible. There's at least five hundred years of typography backing me up on that one.

Not an earth-shattering redesign, but cleaner and I'm all for that. As far as the critics go, just like The Oatmeal joked about Facebook redesigns, they'll forget all about it in ten minutes. Happens EVERY time with a site redesign. (Except for Gawker, that really was pretty bad.)

As far as the missing positive/negatives, a little bit missed, but honestly, the whole formula always goes 'high-positive on anything pro-Apple, negative on anything anti-Apple,' so not really necessary to have anymore.

The fluid option helped quite a bit, but I couldn't find an option in the control panel to make the site darker.

Also, there is just far less info available at a glance on the homepage with this design. With the old design, I could scan 2-3 main headlines, a number of recent forum comments, and the Page 2 and Mac Bytes stories without scrolling at all. With the new design I see ONE main story, and a 'selection' of other stories on the right. That's it. This is a major step backwards.

You pretty much said everything, since I was too lazy to show the same screenshots...it's a MAJOR step backwards in terms of glancing at multiple information...I would ALWAYS click on the left tab if news looked interesting enough; now I can only see the two main features and that's it...not good.

Nice job, I like it. It was a much needed redesign. I like that you can now view parts of recent stories without needing the view the page.

Please make the fluid design fluid in both directions. I despise overly wide browser windows. Things should fit in 900px ... tops! Where have the old design guidelines for websites disappeared?

Can't please anybody these days. There are more complaints about fluid and fixed width than you can shake a stick at. So I'm going to add one more. :p

I have my 15" laptop screen size set to 1024 x 768. Call me old fashioned if you want, but I need to see what I'm looking at on my laptop. The only problem this causes now is that fluid and fixed minimum sizes seem to be set slightly bigger than my screen size, causing the right hand side of the forum post text to be chopped unless I scroll to the right.

This is on Win XP running Opera 11.10 and default page size set to 100%. If I change the page size to 90% the horizontal scrollbar disappears. Same thing happens on IE8.

How does "fluid" and "fixed" affect those people that have accessibility needs?

Apart from that little gripe, it's a darn good redesign. Much cleaner than the old version. Kudos to Arn and team for the changes. :apple:
