Ergonomically speaking, having the side bar means a shorter distance between clicks and scrolling.

Who actually uses the scroll bar though? Every mouse/trackpad/etc made in the last 5+ years has some built-in scroll capability.

Why complaints over the width? Reading down is far easier and quicker than reading across. Otherwise, content over form, so I don't have an opinion about the new design.

How is having to constantly scroll easier than reading content that fills the screen? Would you like it if your newspaper was one continuous narrow column?

Dr Q and Arn, I am very impressed!
A lot of people contributed to the redesign. arn and his programming team did the implementation while the editors, administrators, moderators, and invited members were reviewers and testers.

Not everyone got their way, since we had the same debates you see in this thread. For example, I wanted the headlines to blink and move around the page by themselves to make them easier to spot. ;)

Yes, I agree that reading top to bottom is easier, but still I think this is a bit narrow. However, now that I have tried "Fluid HD" mode I stand corrected. That's just fine, so the question is what's the real use of the "Fixed" mode?

I wanted a consistent view. With the previous totally fluid site, we had to just pick a minimum image size that we just expected it to work. But if people made their windows too small, it would overlap content. Also, the really wide ranges looked kind ugly, and broke some portions of the design, though we later fixed those.

That's why fixed is default. This is how it's supposed to look, and as we make choice in image sizes, youtube embeds etc... we know that it's not going to be too narrow. If you consciously choose fluid, I think you accept that things aren't under our control.

I was scared I didn't like the redesign at first, then I turned on fluid and it just made sense.

Well done Arn, Doctor Q, and the rest of the team!

You guys are all suck ups and clearly have no eye for visuals.

This website looks like my 5 year old nephew made it.

Actually, it looks like it was constructed in MS Word or iWork and just converted.

Sorry to say it, but for me it looks very ugly. I hate especially the big wide block at the right. There is only on thing that goes to the right: The content...

That's what I've been saying. It's so hard on the eyes! The top gradient with blue and white is just terrible.

I thought the old look was better. The new look is so "flat" looking. Also there are no positive/negative accumulators.

Clean and quicker to load. Me likey.

A long time coming, but a worthwhile wait. The control over the width is a nice touch sadly missing from a lot of the newer site designs elsewhere.

Nice job but one request.

Please keep the legacy RSS as an option. I use RSS as an image-free precis and the full RSS is just annoying. THe current legacy option suits me just fine.

Fonts are too big in my opinion, but the rest, really good! Big improvement from the old design.

Oh, if you think macrumors is too narrow, just switch it to "Fluid HD" and it would look better.

Sadly there’s no switch to get that sick wide right column to the left where it belongs...

I definitely like the new design, though I liked the old design just as much, BUT the new page width is way too narrow.
