Well, this sounds right, but you know, there was a little experiment gone bad a while ago - maybe 2002 or 2001. It was the DGVPG and it had a very strange effect on the forums that no one expected.
(snip)
So I think it helps a bit and its also nice that not everyone has one, making the 100+ members who do stand out a little more. Also, by making it 500 post to get an avatar you've pretty much established yourself as a regular on the forums. That's why spamming to 500 is not approved and usually gets you in trouble.

D

Point taken, everyone likes to have a little recognition.

Perhaps I've always been a "backroom boy" rather than a limelight-hugger (spammer?) I probably still won't be posting an avatar, or maybe I'll post a black square to make the point, but then that'd be a statement of sorts wouldn't it?

I wouldn't worry too much about it - there have been many individuals who haven't had a tar even though they could.

Krosfyter had both a solid black and solid white tar for a while.

But anything that dramatic will stick out. You might just want to go with a dot ;)

It's great that people are contributing to this site. I for one have found that this site is the best rumors site on the web, and I am constantly reading (wish I had more time to post) the main page. In the near future I plan to contribute...

However, if I were to contribute, I would want to keep my "regular" status. I guess I worked hard for those posts, and I'd like to work my way up the ranks instead of simply receiving a "demi-god" ranking. I look at the ranking of posters to see if I'll read the post, and I'm afraid that if "newbies" recieve "demi-god" status I'll be thrown off. I think I would be wise to adjust the reanking/name for contributors...

In any event, it's great that people will contribute to the site :)

You're equating 'newbies' as kids or someone who is not knowledgeable - everyone was a newbie. Its the quality of your posts that earns you respect, not a label. So I wouldn't worry about it for that reason.

i definetely agree. just because some people have an avatar doesn't make them the people i want to listen to. although it's true that's newbies have a bad habbit of being total n00b's it's just a percentage game, the short weeding process to the regulars often leaves out any bad taste. but it's all too much of a generalisation. the two things should have nothing to do with each other. certain avatar's make me think a post is worth reading, because i know that user has good stuff to say. i read a lot of posts but avatored members that i just dismiss. like it was said before, you can just attach certain avatar's to certain people. in reality, i don't think attaching respectability to the fact that someone has an avatar is good.

umm, i'm rambling and repeating myself, time for beddy-byes...

The avatars are nice, when used consistently, because they put a "face" on the name. I get all the people whose names begin with "Mac" mixed up, though I know "Hot profiled japanese girl on a blue background" and "Spiked high-heel" because I recognize the images. Of course, when these are changed the association process has to start up again!

I always thought that "Demi-God" meant that you were some sort of hotshot around here, like a "MacRumors God". Now I know that I could actually purchase the title --- sweet. :)

And 500 posts seems like a lot. That's a lot of spam. I guess that only people with nothing else to do with their time will get an Avatar. :D Of course, I'm sure this is what people with Avatars thought when they first got here several years ago. I'm sure I can waste enough time here to get 500.....maybe in 1 year.

EDIT: Oh wait, never mind. I see that I only post 0.79 posts per day. :(

I completely agree. Look. I'm one post closer to my avatar and I've written nothing of importance.;)

I just woke up but...

I can't seem to find out how many posts I've made. I know it's a small number. People keep mentioning how many they have done. How? Need breakfast... allergy meds... grumble grumble grumble.

Click the "Profile" button at the bottom of the post you just made.

I'll have to remember to order my mug sometime this week.

Thanks szark. I had never pressed that button. I feel dumb now.

Instead of the whole Demi-God thing, you could use a Pirate rating system

The Lowly Scaliwag
The Foolish Landlubber
The Trustworthy Matey
The Debonair Swash Buckler
The Most Feared Captain On The Seas

and Arn could be

The Dread Pirate Roberts

601 goes up to at least 5 or 6000 I think, I remember when eye was renewing his demi status he changed from a demi to a 601..

Hee hee....

Anyhoo...who the hell posts a negative rating for this on the front page!?

I'd love to contribute, but I'm short of ca$h at the moment and I don't expect any extra for awhile so....

ah, its 603, 603e, 604, G3, G4 (not sure whether he'll use the numbers or not) and then on to what evers next, 970 or G5 or what ever.

And I'm thinking it will be a long time before we even find out ;)

well, i decided to finally screw the whole notion of seeing what processor ordination i could reach and become a contributing member. my order is placed, and i simply await the mug and demi-god status :D

[can't wait to be able to delete my own posts ]

And for all those Matrix fans:

Your choice of an agent.
Perhaps you could be one of the ships.

If arn wanted to he could obviously be Neo.

Bu I wonder what to call Mr. Anderson...

Mugs are listed as "Temporarily out of stock" today. Wow, how many were sold? (And when will they be back in stock?)

i'm sure they keep a relatively small number of custom items in stock, as after they are produced you can't really use them for anything else if no one buys them.

Unfortunately, the Cafepress store doesn't let you backorder an item that's out of stock (unless I'm missing something). I would have just "subscribed" thru Paypal instead, but I'm not fond of automatically renewing subscriptions (even if it is only $20/year). I guess I'll just keep checking back to see if the mugs are in stock.

The mugs are created on-demand... so it seems they are probably out of stock of "blank" mugs so to speak.

hopefully back soon... I don't have any say though on that. :)
