Used to love 1Password, until they turned into a foolish subscription model. I'm not locking myself into a subscription for a password manager. I have since been using the awesome free and open source Bitwarden. Love it!

I've used 1Password for years.... from the standalone app back in the day now to the family plan where my wife and mother in law can all use the same plan. Sharing passwords is easy and the 2FA along with secure notes, etc. Really great app. Works well on Windows and Mac and mobile devices. Pretty happy with this service.

I came from LastPass and before that the old KeePass. While yes, there are free options, the abilities and refinements of 1Password are why I pay for it. I can change something on any device and instantly it is available on any other device I use it on. It works really well for me.

Bitwarden also uses a subscription model though, albeit freemium, and a lot cheaper. Several very useful features are locked behind the subscription (Yubikey, TOTP generator, sharing).

There is where I make my case for people to get a plan together for families.

My father recently suffered a brain incident and it has affected his ability to process information. He had a spreadsheet that had his account information, user ID, and a "coded" message for the password for each account. We spent quite a bit of time trying to decipher or reset passwords so my mom could perform online functions. I've since converted my standalone 1Password app to a family subscription and setup my mom to enter all her account information in a shared vault with myself and my brother. Then we can both help her when she calls with questions.

I love 1Password and it has been great for me with the family plan. I would recommend it, but more importantly, figure out how you will handle this situation while everyone still has the ability to communicate. Do not wait until it becomes a very involved process!!

I love 1PW but not everything needs to be a subscription. I’m *very* happy to buy new versions as major upgrades are rolled out, but the day they require a subscription is the day I find an alternative.

Subscriptions for the sake of subscriptions are terrible. But when a service has to utilize a service that costs them on a monthly basis to provide syncing features - subscriptions are kind of expected. For me, I don't have a problem paying for a subscription for Day One, VPNs, Office 365, cloud storage, etc. But if there is no reason for a subscription, I prefer standalone apps - and I'll go way out of my way to do that. I hate subscriptions but I'll pay them if I see justification.

While I dislike it, I get subscriptions to major apps suites like Adobe or Office but for small apps with a single use it's just stupid. Sorry, not happening 1Password.
If anything I’m MORE willing to pay a subscription for a password manager. I expect and want it to continue to be developed and for the services to be rock solid and secure.

Why should I pay for an office suite or photo manipulation tools that are basically static? I can’t think of a single new feature that Adobe and Microsoft have introduced that I rely upon daily.

As for the general disdain for subscriptions, I fully get it. That’s why I don’t indulge companies like Adobe and Microsoft or Intuit. But I also realize that the Pay-once model is probably not sufficient for long term viability.

1Password is a great product and I gladly pay the subscription fee. This is a nice deal.
Love 1Password. I still use their app I got many years ago synced via iCloud. My only concern with the new model is that the data is now on their server. I’m not sure how I feel about that if breached....

This is one of my two subscriptions (NordVPN), I justified it by saying that the cross platform support and other features require more maintenance releases than just a new version every year would support, ex: an update to a browser could break support. Probably just making myself feel better.

For those wanting to go local and free, KeepassXC paired with StrongBox on iOS is a great combo.

A reasonable concern. Read their security white paper.

Also not a fan of subscription services and I pretty much stopped using any that switched to it. But 1Password is an exception, because I use it constantly and they update it frequently. The subscription makes me more susceptible to jumping ship eventually though.

I don’t like lock in either, especially for something like this. I’ve never actually explored how difficult it would be to migrate to another PW manager.

There would definitely be pain points depending on how you use 1Password - I’m thinking things like attachments, secure notes, 2FA, tags.

Apple Keychain is free and works well

Apple has truly great built in capabilities, and Keychain came a long way with iCloud, auto-fill and password management. However with 1Password, you can manage passwords for entire family, especially, parents. Plus, it can be used for 2FA and as storage and sharing solution for important documents.
