Subscriptions - death by a thousand cuts. While this is a nice deal, I think there are better less expensive options then paying every month or year
I TOTALLY agree. No more subscriptions. I have been using Data Vault by ( I think the name of the Co. is Ascendo?) for years. One time payment and it work across all devices. I really am hating on the subscription model. It just doesn't pan out over the long run.

While I dislike it, I get subscriptions to major apps suites like Adobe or Office but for small apps with a single use it's just stupid. Sorry, not happening 1Password.

Interesting as I have the opposite feeling. I will never subscribe to office, on my PC I still use office 2007 and it does everything I need. Microsoft has not offered one single thing in 13 years that entices me to upgrade to a newer version. I think Microsoft recognized this behavoir from most of its "home" users and from my time in corporate IT they also saw a large number of corporations holding off on upgrades beause they offered very little in terms of real innovation. Why go through the hassle of upgrading hundreds of users if they are not waiting on any new features? YMMV, admittedly my office needs are very basic but probably indicitive of an average user.

As previously mentioned 1password is one of my two software subs and I justified it by saying that the cross platform support probably needs constant tweaking by the developers to keep all of the different browsers working.

I last used 1Password 6 but when it broke with Catalina, I wasnt upgrading and paying again for 7 and then more than likely have to with 8. So I went to Enpass and called it a day. LOVE Enpass

For those who do pay for yearly individual or family plans, one way to save a little bit of money (even though it's a bit more upfront) is to buy their $125 gift card for $99. I do this anytime I need to renew with them. $125 will pay for 2 years of the family plan and the leftover balance can then be added to the next $125 gift card purchase. Basically you are pre-paying them for two years for $99. For me, I know I like their service and, while I would prefer a one-time price, I can save a little bit by doing this. You can get their gift cards here:

Think of all the apps that we'll have to use that will be subscription only once Rosetta 2 support is dropped on a future version of macOS on Apple Silicon. It's getting to be ridiculous. For instance, I bought a simple clipboard manager called Paste a couple years ago. Now they are forcing me onto their subscription model or I can't continue using their software, which I paid for. For a simple clipboard manager! They say it's to support ongoing feature additions, but I'm good with what they have now. It's a clean way to view my clipboard and grab things from it. I don't need all the cloud integrations and other garbage! You know things have gone too far when a freaking clipboard app is going subscription only.

1Password is a great product and I gladly pay the subscription fee. This is a nice deal.
Same here - but we have the family plan. Just yesterday, I moved all my 2FA accounts off of Authy and into 1Password, and ordered a couple YukiKey’s to secure my 1Password. Very happy with the product and like the fact that it is regularly updated.

Exactly what I do as well.

I also echo the statements people have made about updates. The app/service is constantly being updated.

Also very much not a fan of subscriptions, but I agree with others that 1Password is an exception, and I want to support them. I had been waiting for a sale or discount to happen, so was very happy to sign up with this promo.

Subscriptions mean the developers can continue to pay the bills and continue to develop better and better apps. It also makes support MUCH easier and less expensive, as everyone is on the current version.

until they turned into a foolish subscription model

Hardly foolish if it’s making them money. Annoying certainly, but foolish? I think not.

Why can't we use various password managers that used iCloud for storage?

Because Apple is not the world, perhaps?

Also iCloud has a bad rep among companies that deal with syncing apps.

Please don't start this again! Developers get paid regardless of the pay model, version purchase or subscription and IMHO subscriptions allow developers to be lazy. What incentive does a dev like Microsoft have to innovate Office once they are sub only? I realize you can still buy a very limited version of office standalone but for how long?

Take my Microsoft Office example, what feature has microsoft offered in the last 20 years that has had you on the edge of your seat waiting for that upgrade? Again IMHO the vast majority of office users are locked into that product not for its feature base but simply for compatibility with other users as it is the defacto standard.

As previously stated, I am still using office 2007 on my PC and it is not because I am cheap it is because there is no reason for me to upgrade, there is no innovation so why should I buy a new version? Now if Microsoft was constantly rolling out must have features then I'd be the first one in line to upgrade, but they aren't. Heck even most corporations only upgrade because MS has cut off security updates for the old versions.

Consider goiwith 1Password, looks like a solid package. Ended up going with DashLane. Works on Windows, MacOS, Android, IOS.

Actually YES! I do trust them. Why? Because unlike other password managers that keep your data file on THEIR servers, DataVault data file is kept locally. "DataVault data file is stored in the hidden Library folder as required by Apple's App Sandboxing initiative."
So yes I do trust them and if you look very very very closely, I CAN name them and did! I just wasn't sure of the spelling and FYI it is spelled correctly. So STOP being a jerk, ok?

Subscriptions for the sake of subscriptions are terrible. But when a service has to utilize a service that costs them on a monthly basis to provide syncing features - subscriptions are kind of expected. For me, I don't have a problem paying for a subscription for Day One, VPNs, Office 365, cloud storage, etc. But if there is no reason for a subscription, I prefer standalone apps - and I'll go way out of my way to do that. I hate subscriptions but I'll pay them if I see justification.

This is the precise reasoning I use.

I did a 6 month free trial and it was so cumbersome and frustrating to use. The whole point was that it was supposed to seamlessly connect all my devices regardless of OS. Every time I logged into something I was well aware I was using 1Password because either it didn't capture the password when I first made it or it was so cumbersome and slow it was easier to just remember the passwords.

How do you know it's only local?

At the start it may seem less integrated and cumbersome to use. It did to me. But it may grow on you. It did on me. Once it has all your data in it, it really is a matter of one-click to auto-fill data and if you have 2FA enabled, it will copy that password for you to paste into the next step of your login. For security of accounts, this slight hassle is worth it and sort of needed today, unfortunately.
