I have been using 1Password for about a decade now. I using the older version 6.8.9 which is the last version released before the subscription model was introduced. Also, use iOS version of 1Password, the non-subscription version. Both versions work fine. My wife and I share passwords and we use Dropbox for the sync'ing between Mac computers and iOS devices. The only wrinkle is that Dropbox changed their free plan to limit to 3 devices total. I really like the watchtower feature in 1Password where it will tell me if a site has been compromised and I need to change my password. I recently found some really old password entries that 1Password flagged through the watchtower. Went to those sites and changed the password.

I wanted to give a quick shoutout to 1password customer service.

I am currently in the middle of my 30 day free trial. I saw this article and emailed them asking if it could be applied to my account. I provided the link on the front page of this article, and they were able to add it to my account. I'll subscribe for 1 year and see how I like it.

All this handwringing about subscriptions is easily solved.

Use privacy.com to mint a credit card tied to a specific vendor and limited to the amount of what a (for example) one year of service is. That essentially makes the subscription a one-time annual purchase. Subscription problem solved.

It’s not about paying a renewal. It’s about choosing alternatives that don’t require a sub / renewal to work properly. I am fine with no updates or support, but I don’t accept apps that require payments just to work, even though me using them doesn’t cost them anything (ie nothing goes through their servers etc). Netflix or Spotify sub is one thing, but paying (for example) AirMail every year just to have push notifications is ridiculous.

That’s how my company’s sub model works - expired sub won’t cripple the product, but you lose access to new versions and tech support, which I think is a fair middle ground.

What information can't be backed up?
If i am not mistaken, it is secure notes and it may also include attachments.

Edited to add: I also don’t like the fact that you can’t export your data using the iOS app. I also don’t see a way to do it from their web browser site login.

If a person doesn’t have the Mac or Windows app, I don’t see a way to export data.

I think the whole vault can be backed up. I use Dropbox to sync between my (2) iPhones and my (2) Mac computers. I just tried a test where I added a new secure note on my iPhone and forced it to sync to Dropbox. I then manually downloaded the vault from Dropbox, using the web browser, to my Mac computer. I then forced a sync with the vault downloaded from Dropbox on my Mac computer. The added secure note showed up on the Mac. Normally I would not manually download the vault from Dropbox but I just wanted to try it as a test.

I have gotten the same warning every time.

I have asked them several times over the years and they have said they are working on it but, nothing happens. I don’t recall them ever giving me a specific reason why it hasn’t been possible.

Instead of doing an export try using sync to something like Dropbox.

It is impossible when paying via subscription, the other cloud/local only syncing option only works when paying for an upfront license. The article you've linked even sort of infers that, but it's very vague about it.

It also doesn't work in the App Store version of the app, only the version from their website.

It's all a bit of an inconsistent mess, and because they're so desperate not to tell anyone about the non-sub offering the help pages are hopeless on what you're actually supposed to do to set up a local sync.

I have the App Store version and I did it just fine, and this is when I was using dropbox for this a few months ago.

I've been using 1password for a while and tried lastpass and bitwarden... I find 1pass to be the best of the options especially when you have mixed deviced. If dropbox hadn't restricted syncing to a handful of devices without paying for more I wouldnt bother with getting a subscription but that's pushing me to getting a sub for 1pass. Bitwarden performs poorly on my phone, bad enough that I'd rather just use 1pass instead. I only wish I could use this for a year on my existing account.

@BasicGreatGuy What version of 1Password are you using? I am using version 6.8.9 from the Mac App Store. I just tested doing an export and it seemed to export everything including a document attachment I had in my vault, without throwing up a document unsupported message. I can even see the attachment on the output generated.

Interesting that it can be used for 2FA. iCloud Drive works for storage for me.
How’s the privacy stance on 1Password?

With 1Password you own the encryption key, AgileBits don't have access to it. They store database on their server in encrypted way.

Bla bla bla ...))) Facebook don’t have access to your photo, video, location and camera too )

You can still buy a full access license that does not require a subscription. This way nothing is stored on the 1Password server, everything is self contained on your computer.

What is it that you don’t like about 1password? I’m in decision making mode , and would appreciate your thoughts.

I just found out I can install Chrome on my iOS, turn on sync and have it auto fill paswords in the mobile Safari, so all my problems have been solved. I use Chrome on Mac but Safari on iOS and the need for any third party in the middle is now gone.
