it is by complaining that we can get the admin to fix stuff.

and the new look sure need LOTS of fixing... :D

Well, if people don't make it known what they don't like about the new look, there is a smaller chance that the admins will tweak the things that will make people like it more.
Pointing out issues is one thing. Complaining and whining like little children, i.e. ``I hate the new look" etc isn't going to help. The new software is here too stay. Get over it and figure it out. In the end this is a big upgrade to vB.

Needs fixing:
Turned off the mobile theme at the frontpage and then clicked on forums and went back into mobile.

ok, after playing around a bit this morning, here are some my initial critiques, some are correlated so they might seem redundant critiques, but i just want to emphasize different aspects.

1. everything is too expanded. it takes up a huge amount of space an most of it is just bright, empty space. each post takes literally several inches of screen, even if it is a single line
2. default font size is way too big. i have to zoom out twice to make it 'normal', and then all other sites become miniscule if i move. plus quoted text now becomes too small and barely readable
3. "report" button is in the way. Too highlighted, wrong position. it interferes with reading a thread because it looks like a bolded part of a post. i would suggest to put it top right, and make it white-on-green like the post number or navy on light blue like page numbers.
4. "edit" button is in the way. same as above
5. buttons add too much space between posts. instead of giving a full think row to the buttons, put them on the left next to the post's message, so they don't bloat the post
6. "likes" names add yet more space between posts. i would eliminate this entirely, but as a minimum make it come up only as a mouseover
7. quotes are hard to differentiate from posts. add some subtle shaded background, bring back the italicized formatting, and indent it a bit. also it shouldn't be significantly smaller than the regular text. it just makes it hard to read
8. avatars are too big
9. avatars are only circles. could it be set optional?
10. animated gif don't work as avatars. at least mine does not anymore
11. control of online status does not work. turned it off, but still puts me as online
12. opt-out from receiving emails about threads does not work. i opted out, but i keep getting the emails. do not want.
13. forum menu page is a chaotic. very hard to find threads.
14. site navigation requires multiple clicks/mouseovers. where before things were compact and you could find stuff at a glance, now it requires multiple clicks or repeated mouseovers. very inefficient
15. can't increase posts/page. i like to have more than 25. it should be customizable
16. need to scroll all the way to the top to get to some useful information, like forum navigation directories. they should be repeated at the bottom.
17. too much clutter at the bottom. too much real estate for the 'similar thread' section. just have a link or mousover. same for the macrumors blue box at the bottom. should be one inch thick, not ten
18. bottom ads are intrusive. they bleed into the posts. especially some of them. should be more 'isolated', put them in box, so it is clear they are ads.
19. smilies are harder to 'read'. plus you changed their color codes :( ;)
20. replying to post in full-option mode doesn't have list of previous posts below. so now we need to open a separate tab to double check on things

i'll stop at 20, but there are more coming :D

You do realize you are complaining about the complainers thus sounding just as bad. There is nothing wrong with people voicing their opinions. Trying to shut them down is not exactly in the spirit of this forum.

I'm trying to search a forum but am getting results for all forums. Can we longer search by sub-forum anymore?

Thanks

The site is running extremely slow for me today. Webpages take 15/20 second to load on my iPhone 6 with 25MB internet.

I suppose there is still a lot of behind the scenes work going on.

Is there a way to block all the avatars, historically I never saw they or nearly as many. Now they just take up bandwidth.. the whole site for me at least seems to scroll and load more slowly than the previous site. Not sure what can be done at the user level for this..

on a 16GM 2.7 i7 rMBP

12. opt-out from receiving emails about threads does not work. i opted out, but i keep getting the emails. do not want.
When the change over happened I think all the threads that were subscribed to carried over and were tagged to send emails when there were replies. I went in and "unwatched" a thread and then "watched" it again and chose not to have emails sent. Seems to have worked! :D

Ahh the people who complain about the complainers, the irony... Seriously, if enough people are dissatisfied then things can always change, I'd hate to be that guy that stuck his head in the sand and never voiced his opinion. Conversely if enough people are happy then the site will remain as it is, as it should. I'm not saying this is a democracy or anything, it's a private forum, but I'm sure link clicks and page views is the final word on what they do and don't do.

in this context, 'modern' has become a translation for 'bloated'

they are following the trajectory of MS Office suite: add tons of useless stuff, hide or eliminate the useful and make sure anything that was reachable with one click/mouseover now requires seven of them

Yes, it's harder to use this forum despite the "cleaner" look. I found another thing that was changed, can we not see the number of likes a post has anymore? When I like a post it denotes this, but I used to be able to see how many likes that post has and I don't see this anymore.

Also I don't like the menu bar for checking if you have PMs, quote posts, etc in the upper right. It used to be a fold out menu where you could 1) quickly glance and see what alerts and how many you had and 2) choose which category you wanted to go to. Now you click the flag icon and it fully takes you away from your current page and into the notifications page. Once again going backwards in functionality and making us click more and navigate more pages. Although maybe this is good for their click count and page views?

Where do saved drafts save to? (locally or on MR's servers?) Can it be turned off without turning off Rich Text formatting entirely?

They are stored on the server and are only retained for a set amount of time. Disabling isn't an option in the default software.

11. It works. XenForo still shows you as online to yourself and those with permission to see you while invisible.

12. The option only relates to new threads being watched. Manage previous ones under watched threads.

Double click on the search icon. Or at least click on the cog that shows up after clicking search.

Click search, then the cog:

Likes are shown. We didn't import likes from vBulletin, however, if that's what you are talking about.

This isn't how it works if your js is working properly.... try a different browser and see if it behaves the same?

Some things I like about the new format:

  • Easier to upload files
  • Easier to input media, like YouTube videos
  • Highlighting text and quoting it
  • Automatic saving of drafts, helpful if you leave the page by mistake
  • Tagging- you can reply to people without quoting giant blocks of text
  • Long quotes cut off and only shows the entire quote if you click on it
  • Bullets and lists
And I'm sure I'll find more enhancements. Love the update!

So is the font page going to adopt a similar theme? At the moment the front page and forum looks don't match that well.

Also, I think you should use a different icon for the OS X section. A single folder looks kind of weird, especially since it's also used for all the sub categories. I would suggest using something that resembles the Finder icon to represent OS X.

The feature where long quotes are cut off comes in handy here :D

I find the white/light blue row colouring too distracting to skim over the topic titles. I liked the old one because it was clear what was a new post (in bold). Now, it's a tiny blue dot and I really have to read everything rather than just skim over it.

If I had it my way I'd make the row colouring white/light grey, or just have them all white like it was before. New topics can still have the blue dot but having them in bold too would be a lot better.
