I am going to attempt to jog an entire 10k, but definitly at least jog the first 5k.

Edit: You guys embarrassed me for that 10k time I posted lol. I am about 40 minutes in last place.

don't worry about time. good job finishing the 10k :)

time will come later, just keep at it ;)

Hmm... now it's been more than a few days... anybody know why/how my best mile has been registered in the "Bestest Best Time 1 Mile" without any distance has been registered in the "MacRumors Feb Rumble"...?!?

not sure what's going on there. i don't know what to tell you

that's cos i'm here sorry been busy most of today with stuff

adding you right now:cool:

thanks, much appreciated. :) A shame my feb. 1 run was without the sensor. :(

A question about the 1 mile (and 10k, I guess) challenges - how are those measured? My "personal best" mile while using my nike+ is 6:22 but it's being reported as 6:39. Anyone know why?

I was only able to jog the first 5k and then walked the next 5k. Shaved about 15 minutes from my prior 10k. Then I quickly jogged a mile in 10 min.

the rumor is your bestest mile is your fastest first mile of any run. so if you run faster your second mile, it will show up on your nano, but not on nike+

congrats! :) see, time will come. just think positive ;)

Being an admin, is there any other work involved other the inviting people?

I am thinking about starting a Nike+ challenge my university and just wanted to know the workload involved. I do not have lots of time on my hands, but if it were a simple task i would take it up.

heh. That makes very little sense. I can't ever see having a fast first mile. Any runner will tell you that you're just getting warmed up the first mile.

yeah i know. nike is supposed to be trying to fix it....or so i am told anyway...but yeah, you're right. some people run some, and then start a new 1-mile workout to get a better time....

That would be the best way to go. I have to set up a time to run a fast mile again this month and try and beat my best from last month of 6:29.

......................I'm definitely going to do some interval training and get my endurance and speed up.........................D

These challenges are playing havoc with my training!
I need to do more interval training and have rest days.
But I can't stop it.........must get more distance.

I started running again in december.
Haven't run for a very, very long time (due to a broken leg and smashed kneecap).
I'm getting distance but at slow speed.

need to focus on interval training not distance.

Bah!!! My sensor just stopped transmitting 1.15 miles in to my run this morning and wouldn't start again! It was the first time I'd tried using it without music (didn't feel like the headphones today) but I don't see how that could do it. And even now, back at home, I can't get them to reconnect.

Just out of curiosity, what are people's running schedules like? I try to run 5 days a week with 2 off for rest. I only get one longer run in on the weekend.
My pace is usually a hair over 9 minutes / mile for longer runs.

This is my 8th week of running and I am a bit perplexed that I am not dropping poundage the way I thought I would running 25-30 miles a week and already being overweight. How is it possible to run over the weekend over 22 miles and gain 4 pounds? Very strange. If a pound is 3500 extra calories and I burn off over 2600 at my weight just watching TV and then burn off an additional 3600 running - what gives? I was hoping to be lighter so I would not stress out my old bones ;) The challenges are continuing to motivate me though.
It also seems like there are more motivated runners this month - go team...;)

hi ziwi,

The general rule is that you burn ~100 calories per mile run. So if you're running 25-30mi/wk, you're burning ~2500-3000 extra calories while you're running. Additionally, when you run, especially in the morning, you raise your metabolism for the rest of the day so that adds some additional calorie burning. But as you say, 1 lb. of fat is ~3500 calories. So really, holding all else equal, running about 30 mi/wk should burn about one pound of fat.

However, there are a few things to consider.

First, are you sure your measurements are accurate? Are you weighing yourself at the same time of day (morning is the best for consistency) and wearing the same amount of clothing (little or none is best for consistency)?

Second, running adds muscle. Sinewy muscle to be sure, but it's still muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat. So even if you're losing fat, you could be gaining weight - which is why weight is a miserable measure of fitness.

Third, burning an extra 3500 calories/week is great - as long as you're not just eating 3500 (or more) calories extra. I know that whenever I get in shape I get ravenously hungry. And to make it worse, the more you run, the more your body craves exactly what you shouldn't be having - simple sugars and fats.

And to answer your question, I try to run 7 days/week, but sometimes I miss a day. I try to do a long run on the weekends. My pace is usually just under 7 min/mile. I used to be in MUCH better shape, and I would love to get back to my high school and college form. I think my nike+ and this group are going to help me a lot in that regard. :)

that would explain alot for my weight gains overs the past 3 months -

stopped smoking ( going very well BTW )
started running ( not going the way i'd like )

put on 2 stone in 3 Months now just under 11.5

and yes i have more muscle now in my arms and in my lower back :)

EDIT : should say i'm eating more then double then i used to , drinking about 2 litres of water a day also and eating more fruit and veg - god the thing's i do for this running club:D

oh - I have a question about the nike+ that I've been meaning to ask. Do you all turn off the sensor (hold the button for 3 seconds) after each run? Or do you just leave it on? And if the latter, does it go in to some kind of low-power mode?

The manual says "The sensor is awake and on by default. If you want to store the sensor for a long period of time or make it stop transmitting, you can put it to sleep." But if it doesn't go in to some kind of low-power mode when not in use and you never turned it off, wouldn't you be using up the (non-replaceable) battery about 40x faster than if you just had it on for a 30-45 min run each day?

if you want to focus on interval training, and still get some distance in, try walking some to get more distance, so you can still get your intervals in

not sure what's going on. it's definately doesnt have anything to do with the headphones. i hope you get it sorted out though :)

just to add what someone else already stated, if you find yourself eating more, this could be a reason why you're not losing weight. i would advise that you try to drink more liquids. not only will this help you not eat as much, but you will sweat this out when you run. just a thought

and i usually run between 5-6 days a week. but on the 1-2 days i don't run, i still might walk or go for a 1-2 mile jog or so. tonight i'm gonna do a little pool workout.

i just leave it in my shoe all the time.

Thanks for the response QCassidy. I think I am burning more calories per mile based on my weight (220). I do feel more hungry, but do not feel I am adding more to my current diet. I was just hoping the weight would go down, before my legs starting hurting - this is why I rest 2 days a week.

This is the most I have run since High School and I know your metabolism slows down as you age but this is nuts.

To answer your question - I turn the sensor off after each run.

LikeTom - Kudos on the end of smoking - that is a great thing, congrats.

I am a big bag of water :) - I drink a ton and have noticed that I do sweat much more after a few weeks of the running. To be young again - My running weight in high school was 155 now I weigh 220. I am also pushing toward 40 so if nothing else, my heart will be in better shape...;)

I am pleased that my legs have been holding up so long so far (shin splints have not returned yet), but I stretch the calves regularly and ice the shins almost everyday.

It is you guys and the speed challenges on top of the distance ones that get my competitive side going - it is going to be the death of me ;)

that's a good thing :) put in some gatorade now and then though. just keep at it and you're weight will start to come down....trust me ;)

yeah, stay on top of the shins. keep doing what you're doing and you'll be fine

yeah, the challenges is great for everyone....hey, what doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger ;)

Tried it again around noon and it seemed to be working ok again. No idea why, but I lost another 5 mile run. Now my nike+ data is 11 miles behind what I've actually run this month. :(

Thanks for the responses about the sensor. Anyone else have an opinion about turning it off (or not)? Seems like leaving it on would shorten its lifespan enormously, but maybe it goes in to some kind of hibernation when it's not actively transmitting to the receiver.

Ziwi, I'm not sure what to say. Personally, I weigh the same no matter how much I run. Really - I can be running 70 mi/wk or nothing at all and my weight fluctuates by no more than a pound or two, if that. On the other hand, I am a lot "softer" when not running and a lot more defined when I'm training seriously. So do consider that it might be that you're converting fat to muscle and thus not seeing any change on the scale even though there's one in your body.

do you have a case on your nano? do you ever get sweat on the nano? not sure if this has anything to do with it, but i guess it could. i have a case for mine.

it's supposed to go into some kind of sleep mode when not in use i think
