Macrumors Nike+ February Challenges

edit: once again the technology is failing me. Today the sensor lost the signal after 3.58 miles, somehow got it back for about .3 miles, and then lost it again. The result is my 5 mile running being cut to under 4. This is getting old, fast. What's the point if the sensor isn't going to record my whole run?

this should not be happening. take it back to wherever you got it from and have them replace it. apple stores have reportedly been pretty lenient about it.

as for the survey-

what do you mean by "good" to run? hah. i usually push for around 5 miles, including a bit of walking. i can fairly comfortably run around 3 miles without any walking, although my running is like many's walking. hah.

i prefer to run in the morning. to get it over with. not break up the day, and have a good start to the day. but because i'm not a morning person, i only do that on weekends and otherwise i run after work.

i like running with other people, but because it's very hard to match pace, i probably feel most relaxed when running by myself or with someone who i really trust doesn't mind running at my pace. otherwise i push myself to run closer to their faster pace and it messes me up.

Do you frequently change songs while running? I have hit pause sometimes when changing songs or just trying to get the screen to light up to see where I am at and losing some distance. It is also fairly easy to pause or end the workout when you fiddle with the iPod while running - but that may be because mine is in a case already and the arm/wristband when running so it take alot to get a response.

yeah, I guess that could be it. I do change songs sometimes, and the nano is in an invisible shield and then a case. Also, my fingers have been mostly numb the last 2 days. ;) But the thing is, if that's what's happening, I should hear "workout paused," right? Yesterday I didn't have headphones, but today I did.

How do you get Nike+ to record calories burned? On my Nike account it's says calories are N/A for my runs? Is there a section to enter your weight?

we should have someone trying to fun in every timeslot for those 24 hours. Depending on the day I am willing to put in about 4 hours if needed to cover time slots.

i must be a wally - as i just went out for a crack at the mile , i did not notice how cold it was outside did my thing 0.5 mile in doing great! on course for under 6 min - when i felt the need to stop - so i did then 2 sec later both my leg's just shrunk and an almighty pain brought me to the floor!

i spent about 10 min there trying to stretch my leg muscles out to stop the dam pain.

anyhow hobbled home in pain - as soon as i walked in the house the Mrs say's you crazy fool it's -2 c out there :( oops

so i think i'll be resting until the weekend and i will not be running in the cold again - my body is clearly not built for it

it's not just the cold - it's the silly way the nike+ works for the mile competition. Of course you're going to pull something if you sprint out the door in freezing weather. The only way to run fast in the cold is to do a nice long warm up so your muscles are ready for faster running.

yep, that and stretch real good too. and make sure you have enough liquids in you, or you'll cramp up....

I run 5k everyday I don't have a hockey game. Two times a week I have a game, and on game days I run a quick 3k to warm me up.

There is a tonne of snow where I live right now, so I'm tending to stick to the treadmill, and it's incredibly frustrating. I can run faster on the treadmill, and my iPod will tell me I'm slowing down simply because I'm taking longer strides. It's a bit of a downer, plus I think it's under clocking me. Last month I did a 5k run with a buddy outside, and we drove it afterwards and it was nearly 6k..

yeah, I hear ya rick. I think it's clear that this technology is not good enough to be a serious training tool if you're really concerned about times. it is fun and a good motivator though.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining too loudly. I cannot express how much I love this thing. It has me running more then I ever had before. Although once a week would be more then I'd ever ran before.

Some things bug me though. Tonight I thought I'd up the tempo a bit, I put the treadmill at 6.5 for my 5k. I'm used to 6.0-6.1, it absolutely killed me. I wanted to quit before I hit 2k, now I did impress myself by continuing. When I finished I checked the treadmill to see how far it said I ran, 6.4k. With 6.1 I run ~6:40/km, at 6.5 is said I was running around 7:10/km. I think something is amok.

Again, I'm not complaining. I love the thing, and I'm just happy to be able to enjoy running and being active.

You can add them yourself, but they won't get added to the challenge stats.

You can always taunt the members you might have beat saying you would have had more miles if you had your sensor sooner :p

D
You sure, I looked on nike + and it said I couldn't manually enter runs.

Anyway, my Nike + came today, so I would like to join the competition. Nike + name is DKersten. I am excited!

Well, you could always warm up with a Free workout, then end that and start the mile as a new workout.

right, he didn't mean you can add them to the nike+ site, just that you can list them here and keep your own record of the real total. That's what I do - I've kept a paper log for nearly 10 years now, and even with this nike+ I still record all my runs on paper.

Good news: My nike+ worked for my entire run today! yay! In an effort to avoid further mishaps, I'm going to try just not turning it off and hope that the connection stays more consistent (and that the battery lasts longer than a few weeks!).

yeah i still keep an excel file with all my running stuff. can't depend on this nike stuff yet (or ever)

hmm. My run today was reported as 8.02 miles. But on Gmaps Pedometer (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/), it shows as 7.21. I understand that the nike+ isn't perfect, but that's too much to tolerate. That's off by about .1 per mile! Now I'm wondering if all of my runs have been off. :(

that is why it is good sometimes to hit the treadmill. I find it is off on the low side for me a little. I do feel like when I am outside I get short changed too. How do you know the website you went to is right - is it sidewalks versus streets - who knows...

I ran close to nine miles today, but the nike + only counted it as 7.23. I calibrated it after the workout (I didn't have time before it), tomorrow it will be much more accurate (I hope!). It also didn't help that it turned off when I tied my shoe at the end and then did 30-30s for another 7 minutes that it didn't count.
Am I entered in the competition?

have you calibrated it? that always helps, but yes mine isn't that accurate either. but yours is off in a good way :p

and just so everyone knows, when i ran my 5:30 mile, i actually ran 5:13, but the nike thing was off, so i had to run further to get a whole mile according to the nano

if you didn't get an invite either via email or on the nikeplus site, then you haven't been added to the competition yet. Liketom has to add you, i think

Ok, I guess I am not in yet then, should I pm him?

yes, I have. The funny thing is that after I calibrated it, I ran a fast lap, and it got reported as .22 instead of .25. So if anything, I expected the nike+ to under-report, not over-report mileage.

i think the opposite. for every .22 you go, it thinks you went .25. so it gives you .03 for every .25 you go. i'm only assuming that it works this way though
