He would still be better off than the foxxcon employee who lost the phone.

true, he is way better off. But both will be better off not working for apple phone company, sorry apple computer.

better reception if nothing else.

Just edited the post, to include that. It's amazing to me the leaps of imagination some people make based on the flimsiest of "evidence", who then proceed to get disappointed when the actual product gets announced and doesn't measure up to their wild expectations.

Not the final prototipe (hope)

I think that this is just prototipe. The real Iphone 4G will look much better and ofcourse will NOT have removable battery by user. ( i hope, because i realy dont like this one :(

Ugly as hell...

...but goes well with the MacBookPros !

I do not undestand. Is that not the same device, we saw a year ago, when pictures of the presumed 3GS leaked out ?

Beautiful beautiful design, really shows up the 3G when they are side by side in those photos. A very classic Apple minimalistic industrious look, if they drop the seams it will look fantastic, really like how the aluminium edges out between the front and back glass. And I'm really liking that the back is flat, drives me mad when my phone is on the desk and I want to do something with one hand and it starts going round in circles. I'm sold, was not a fan of the plastic curved back of the last 2 gens but I do like this, hope it's close to the real deal.

I guess this is a better place for a more formal critique. Here is my take on this as a designer:

I feel this iteration is a step backwards for a number of reasons. The design as a whole is much less familiar as an iPhone and an Apple product. The classic silver bezel is gone as are the simplistic lines that grace all of Apple's industrial designs. By removing the curved backing, Apple has taken away ergonomic considerations, something they were careful to champion when the first iPhone and even the iPad were released.

Taking this a step further, the transition between the glass front and the aluminum center housing is awkward. Evidence by the close up images provided by Gizmodo, the materials are not flush and come together more like tectonic plates than a finely tuned industrial design. There are also smaller design inconsistencies, including the volume buttons, which no longer have their contexts defined. What this means is that the previous volume rocker made it clear that the top was volume up and the bottom volume down. These new buttons, perhaps to Apple's benefit, are no longer as strictly defined.

Overall, the 3G/3GS seem much more well executed and resolved. I will be disappointed if this turns out to be the real deal, but I am extremely doubtful.

You must be a crappy designer if that is the only "flaws" you could find. The design is a lot more similar to the current apple products than the 3G/3GS models, ever since Apple went away from the iPhone 1G design things haven't been the same, until now. Your socalled "classic silver bezel" was a pain the the butt, it gets scratched so easily and after just a few month of owning the iPhone you have a scratched blotchy looking bezel.. Just horrible and personally I'm happy they got rid of it since the new aluminium/metal none-shiny frame looks so much more scratch resistant.

ergonomically the new flat-back design looks a lot like the iPhone 1G so why are you praising the first iPhone but bashing the new one?? That's just strange, the curved back was not ergonomic or comfortable in any way whatsoever and it allowed for the iPhone to slip out of ones hand like a slippery eal, not only that but you couldn't place the iPhone on the table and write text messages without it wobbling annoyingly, this is something you could do on the 1G iPhone and that beats picking up the goddamn thing every time you want to reply to a text.

Why do you claim that the materials are not flush? They look pretty flush to me and the guys over at Gizmodo said it felt "awesome in their hands" If there was any inconsistencies between the material then I'm pretty sure they would have wrote about it. Your whining about the volume buttons make no sense, the old volume rocker didn't indicate which was VolUp and which was VolDown.. And the new one doesn't either. Any idiot knows that the top button will turn the volume up and the down button will turn the volume down, only a complete and utter retarded buffoon wouldn't be able to figure that one out.

Personally I think it looks great and it really seems like Apple addressed all the issues and kinks the old iPhones had. I'm not saying these things as a fanboy or anything but there's a reason why they went for this design and not the old one. The old one had too many issues, cracking cases, buttons falling out, loose volume rockers, crocked screens etc etc. The new design is much more simplistic and the issues will hopefully be less.

Where did you get your design degree? Must have been a cheap school.

I like the new iPhone. It looks much more like it is being designed with features and ease of use in mind instead of just style. It looks a lot more like a smart phone and less like an iPod.

I think it is funny that so many on here said it was ugly and dismissed it as a fake before it was confirmed as real. After it was confirmed as the real deal they started to change their mind about the design.

This is a true follow-up to the first iPhone released. Thought about getting a 3G/3GS, but the back design seemed like a step back from the aluminum / flat design that preceded it. .

Looks Like a Mini HP SLate to Me

Whether front facing or edge on, the supposed iPhone 4G looks like the HP Slate to me, down to the placement of the aluminum banding. There is no way Steve Jobs is going to approve that form factor given the upcoming war between the iPad and HP Slate.

As a past Nexus One owner I can say that it was downright IMPOSSIBLE to use the OLED screen on the N1 OR the ZuneHD outside in the sun. Absolutely impossible. I have no trouble using my iPhone outside though. To me that functionality is better than the "oooohhhh awwwwww" factor of OLED.

I don't think it is a "oh aw" issue, but one of battery life. Apparently OLED screens are far more conservative on the battery, and given they are thinner, it would leave mroe room for the battery size INCREASE - a double win for iPhone users. In fact, when I read all of the iPad reviews, my first wish is "Why can't my iPhone survive 10 hours of hard use?"

Specs

Does anyone know what the new Specs for the iPhone 4G? I'm wondering what kind of processor and ram and video card the new phones going to have.

I think it looks great! I'm still using the original Edge iPhone coz I didn't like the rounded cheap plastic of the G3 and G3S

AGREED! i love my original iPhone. the 3G and 3GS were a "cheapening" of the design with the lightweight plastic replacing the heavier quality feel of the original. And I don't need to again go into the ill-conceived nature of the curved back on the 3G and 3GS. ew!

This thread has made me loose all hope for the the human race. That Phone is not a prototype it final. It's ****ing Beautiful and has so much more class the the 100 "similar" phones. Thats why apple is designing this thing and not you lot!!!!!!!

I didnt have time to read through all the posts on this thread, but, anyone here remember that guy that was selling those old school iphone first gen prototypes on ebay? i remember something about one of them focused on the software, and the casing/ hardware were plasticy, and sub-par. while the other had top notch glass screen, etc, and focused on the actual design and case of the phone.

anyone think this could be the deal with this phone? yeah granted gizmodo said it had a seemingmly "high Res" screen, but who knows this could just be something to throw us off their scent.

just my 2 cents :p

I love going back and reading these types of critiques. These phones, and the 5/5S which were similar, became the most popular phones on the planet!

It's funny because I agree with the first half of my critique (curve) but not the second half. Those phones ended up being beautiful and lived up to the Leica-esque history they referenced.
