I haven't read all the posts so I'm sorry if someone has already mentioned this. Gizmoto has posted an article about the person that "lost" this Iphone. It is claimed that the phone was lost on March 18th. I find it very interesting that 8 days later on March 26th Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt were spotted having coffee and it was reported that Jobs was overheard saying "They're going to see it all eventually so who cares how they get it. Let's go discuss this somewhere more private." Could they have been talking about the lost iPhone?

Quoted for piecing together the information really well - would be awesome if what you've said is true, though I guess we'd never find that out.

It wasn't meant in poor taste. Steve Jobs had a liver transplant and as far as I'm concerned is doing okay now. It was a joke, and did I say anything not true? I didn't say "had a change of liver" pejoratively. At least, that's not what I meant it as.

Nobody is doing fine after any transplant, let alone a liver transplant. He's on anti-rejection meds for the rest of his life which has been shortened dramatically (maybe 10 more years) as has been the quality of his life. He's also experiencing negative side effects that you can see just by looking at him (i.e. weight loss).

Jokes about somebody's health are always in poor taste, regardless of your intentions.

Anyway, back on topic.

I like how originally, everyone hated it when it was presumed to be fake. Now that it's nearly certainly real, everyone loves the thing. Just goes to show that this website is just an outlet for rampant fanboyism, rather than smart consumerism.

to me it resembles the nokia n96, the curvature has a silver border and i lays thins and flat. I'd say its thinner and probably will have the oled screen people are hoping for which will increase battery life.

now as for the apple employee with lost it, he better just not come back to work and hopefully risk getting murdered :p

Ah yes, this also reminds me of the aluminum keyboard days.:D

yick

I expect more from Apple. Why would they shave off the curve of the back, which makes it so comfortable to hold in your hand? I strongly disapprove.

Anyone else looking at their iPhone right now, and thinking how it looks more like a prototype than the 'new' one?

As of a few days ago I really wouldn't have been disappointed had the new phone been aesthetically similar to the current models, It's amazing how such subtle changes to the design can make such a difference, even in their blurry pictorial representations, I absolutely love the new design, I know it's likely to change slightly on final release, but even if it didn't I'd be more than happy with what I'm seeing, i even love those seemingly perfunctory seams. Without sounding too hyperbolic and excited, and to echo what has been recently mentioned this is probably the best design from Apple ever, as far as electronic devices go, this is minimalistic contemporary design personified. The HTC EVO 4G looks like a cheap eastern knock off compared to this. And for once it seems the new iPhone isn't going to compromise on hardware features, and who knows what software enhancements it might have in addition to what was announced at the 4.0 OS keynote. If it records decent 720p video, then I think it will be a truly killer device. The only thing I hope for is that the 2 separate volume buttons enable more keystrokes to provide a camera shutter button, and maybe for example pressing both together disables auto-orientation etc.. current rocker button has limited functions, two separate inputs are more practical.

June/July can't come soon enough, I've been so jealous of 3GS owners for a year now, I really can't wait! I just hope they have an affordable (free) upgrade plan for current 2G/3G owners. And this time next year hopefully everyone will be able to upgrade easily, making it 'fair' for all involved, in terms of length of purgatory served LOL.

Alright then, my bad.

Isn't it amazing how people seem to like it more now that it is getting more and more likely that this will be the final product?

I never thought it was ugly but the back does look kinda cheap-ish now that the pictures are clearer. I like the flat profile, I just hope dropping it once on a corner won't smash it to bits.

Here is my take on this as a designer:
The classic silver bezel is gone as are the simplistic lines that grace all of Apple's industrial designs. By removing the curved backing, Apple has taken away ergonomic considerations, something they were careful to champion when the first iPhone and even the iPad were released.

well, at least u didnt say you were a successful designer.

this iPhone seems to finally HAVE the "simplistic lines" that grace Apple's other designs! have you looked at the sharp aluminum edges of a MacBook Pro or an iMac lately? The new shape certainly embodies Apple's famous industrial design aesthetic better than the 3G/3GS organic plastic shape.

As for the curved backing...GOOD RIDDANCE. It was better as an idea than it was in execution. I mean a back that curves to conform to your hand would be great if the phone were the size of a baseball, but it's so thin, the back never really touches or conforms to the hand - you just hold the phone by the edges. So, NO, Apple did not "take away egronomic considerations" (whatever that means) - they have improved ergonomics by giving us flat edges to hold on to and a flat back that allows the phone to be easily used while lying on a flat surface (games, calculator, etc). These were reasons I have kept my original iPhone. Good to see Apple getting back to solid design standards.

Flat back, flat edges, heavier/more substantial feel....excellent evolution!

And I'm sure if it did have an OLED screen, you would be talking about how OLED's are so great.

As a past Nexus One owner I can say that it was downright IMPOSSIBLE to use the OLED screen on the N1 OR the ZuneHD outside in the sun. Absolutely impossible. I have no trouble using my iPhone outside though. To me that functionality is better than the "oooohhhh awwwwww" factor of OLED.

The curved back does NOT impact your hand during phone calls or general use. Why? Because you generally do not hold the phone FLUSH into your palm, you use your fingers to pinch the edges, so unless you have the hand of a 10 year old girl, the curved back doesn't come into play.

Don't expect to be using a front facing camera for any kind of video/audio iChatting until the next generation of networks is in place. AT&T can't seem to handle webpage downloads most of the time - do you think millions of people trying to run live video/audio streams to each other is really gonna work?

Not gonna happen. Not with 3G. Not with AT&T. ;)

WiFi......nuf said.

Yea right

That's crap... It's so obvious that that will never be released. Apple just had their designers make somthing fast to throw us off. But there is no way on earth that that is the final iPhone 4G. I mean look at it... That looks like a cheap droid design. Not apple, I'll put all my money on it. Heck... I'll put money on it I don't even have.

I don't see how people can look at the pictures of both phones together and think one looks gorgeous and one looks hideous... They aren't different enough from one another to warrant those two extremes. Just don't get how you could LOVE one, and HATE the other.

I don't hate it, I don't like it. It's simply nothing special...

I wouldn't be surprised if this is not the final design; it could even be radically different. The hardware is likely final, but the case? It's pretty bland. Anyone in love with it is just drunk on the koolaid.

+1

I don't see how you can say that. People like different things. I think the Scion XB and the Pontiac Aztek are the ugliest cars in the world, but clearly the owners like them. Everyone likes different things, and just because some people like the look of the new iPhone doesn't mean they are drunk on koolaid or anything like that, it just means they don't share the same view as you on the product.

I love my uMBP design, but some PC people don't. Its almost like people are allowed to make up their own minds on whether they like a products design.
