I am experiencing the same issues on my new M1 12.9". What is a good free ad blocker? I actually returned my first ipad because I thought it had a bad battery issue!
I've been using Adblock Pro in conjunction with Adguard.

Glad I found this thread. I was browsing the forum two nights ago and my phone got really warm and the battery drained about 1% every minute. I rebooted my phone and it stopped draining fast, but I didn’t come back on the forum after, so I didn’t realize the forum was the issue at the time.

I was just now browsing the forum again and my phone got really warm and the battery was draining quickly like last time. I realized it was MR causing it so I found this thread and just installed an ad blocker. Now my phone is cooled off and the battery draining normally again.

I’ve been experiencing the same issue on all of my iOS devices. I don’t use any adblocker or anything, and I can watch the battery drop off in real time while my iPad or iPhone gets incredibly warm.

A post has raised a question.

Is this an iOS 15 issue? Are those experiencing problems on iOS 15?

This thread suggests that the problem started with iOS 14.5 or 14.6

It’s happening for me on iOS 14.6.

I am on 14.6 as well. Without reading that thread, I noticed disabling ads seems to have fixed it. I think the issue is that some of the ads being delivered are looping video. For whatever reason, Safari ain’t liking the format or behavior of whatever is happening with your ad exchanges

Yep, this is a definite issue for me on iPhone 11 Pro, iOS14.6 - phone gets hot (hot, not warm) and battery drains. It's almost certainly related to adverts as I have no adblocker on my phone. (Well, I do now;))

I can't speak for macOS as I do run an adblocker on that.

I have seen this on my iPhone, and after paying for the ad-free version on 7/1 it is back to normal ... so imho ad related. I also see similar behavior on other heavy ad supported sites ...

I've been meaning to put my $.02 in. I've noticed on Safari on 14.7b4 the phone gets slightly warm. My opinion is something within IOS combined with the ads are causing this. My ipad on ios 15 doesn't seem to get warm at all.

I began seeing this in iOS 14.5 I believe; I upgraded to 14.6 beta hoping it would be resolved but it was not, and the problem remains on 14.6 final. When folks began troubleshooting, and focusing in on using an ad blocker to resolve, I was surprised, as I was already using AdBlock Plus in Safari and still seeing the issue. It was suggested that Firefox Focus resolved the issue, so I disabled ABP and installed Firefox Focus and enabled it's content blocker in Safari and lo and behold it worked. So it seems like there is something definitely script/ad related, and whatever it is, was not stopped by AdBlock Plus, but IS stopped by Firefox Focus.

Edit to add: This issue doesn't seem to appear on my Mac or PC at all, just iPhone. I haven't tested on an Android device.

I've noticed my iPhone with 14.6 heating up for the past couple of weeks while browsing MR, however that timing is mostly meaningful because I've had more time than usual to read the forums. Couldn't say if it's been happening longer than that.

I'm a contributor so I don't see ads.

Coming back to this, was something changed as a result of the discussion? My iPhone's no longer hearing up while browsing MR forums.

Mine heated up a ton last night while browsing - iPhone 12 Pro Max on the latest 14.7.1. Thought I was crazy until I came across this thread. It seemed to get better after a phone reboot, but then I was browsing again and it came back. As soon as I closed the tab out on Safari the phone cooled down and battery life was normal.

Problem is back again, phone getting warm and battery draining like no tomorrow, content blockers aren't helping like before, wouldn't hold you breath for a fix, it got swept under the rug last time, it's the ads causing the battery drain.

Shame great forum, not efficient though.

@arn offered to troubleshoot this, I would not call that "sweeping it under the rug". Did you send him a video as he requested?

The ad network has been testing but it’s hard to reproduce.

If someone here can reliably make it happen, if you can record a session where it happens, it would help track it down.

Not sure how long a video that would require to show excess drain, but if you can do it, Dropbox or iCloud it to me: arn@normalkid.com

Posted screen shots the last time it happened, came back and said couldn't find out what the problem is, people have said the types of ads on these forums are very resource hungry, seems like nothing was done about them.

Only way I fixed it was by installing a content blocker, now one user is saying it's not working anymore and the battery drain and heat issues are back.

My point was, @arn made a specific request for someone to send him a video to help with troubleshooting. It appears that nobody took him up on it.
No need for a video, some users found out what the problem was last time, it's the type of ads on here that is the problem when it comes to heat and battery drain, one of them put up a cpu usage graph with the ads on and off, with them on his cpu load was huge compared to them being off.

Maybe someone can re post the problem.

Can we please fix these forums once and for all, even with a content blocker my phone is getting really warm and I’ve lost 3% in 5 minutes while being on here.

Get ads that don’t drain people devices, really over this crap 🤦‍♂️😡

Just lost 8% in the short time being on here and phone is very hot.

FIX THIS CRAP ALREADY 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I’ve tried a lot of things, even blocking the adds that help run this forum… but I can’t keep coming back on here the way it’s destroying my battery, health and heating up my phone. It’s madness.

why is nothing be done or the site being run this way that it damages the very phones it’s promotes. Madness. 😡

Hello 👀 is anything going to be done about this terrible battery drain? 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Use Tapatalk. You can’t expect them to fix the site right away and when it comes to ads, there may not be a way to fix it without getting rid of them. Tapatalk works fine.

Have you seen the reviews for taptalk lol, no thanks, the site and forums were working perfectly a while ago, no reason why they can’t again.

If this keeps happening, might be time to retire soon, iPhone, iPad batteries are getting hammered, the heat is another issue all together 🤦‍♂️😡😡😡
