if what the keynote is going on is a P4 what stops all other computers with a P4 to run OS X?

Hardware changes to boot ROMs and things like that.

It can't that hard to make a hardware restriction that will only allow the Mac OS to run on hardware that has a specific profile that is supported by Apple.

11:00am PDT - Here’s the talking point you’ll be hearing over and over: Intel chips run cooler than the PowerPC. More boilerplate about combining our strengths, two legendary companies, relentless advancement (advancement?) of Moore’s Law, etc….

10:59am PDT - Runs old TV ad: “Apple Computer would like to apologize for toasting the Pentium in public.” Otellini: “Now, we didn’t have a grudge about that…”
that ad was funny

shame this is'nt

Really going all-out to try and lighten the mood, aren't they? Free s**t for developers, happy, smiling CEOs...

Very much doubt the user base (remember, those guys who kept you in business?) will fall for it.

Can you explain that? I'm not trying to be a smart ass but I really want to be educated as to why people think this is such a big deal. What's different? we had macs with PPC now we have macs with x86. Am I missing something major here?

11:01am PDT - More boilerplate: It’s not the end of the story, it’s just the beginning! He was funny about the bunny, though.

Amen. If Apple can weather this transition, they're golden. I can see Macs becoming just as popular as iPods.

If not...not something I want to think about.

well they could give us dev kits too ? and steve jobs will come round your house and say sorry for going intel ?

maybe thats a start -

we need more hardware details

This is the end of the closed system.

Can't wait until I can get OS X on my Athlon. Cheap, and faster than any similarly clocked Intel POS.

wow. Some people don't get the point, do they?

Nothing is going to be different. Intel chips instead of PPC. You'll still have to buy Apple hardware to run OS X. OS X isn't going to just work on a Dell

GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEADS PEOPLE.

If OS X was really going to run on ANY x86, Steve would have made a huge stink about that.

NOTHING IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT.

Actually, wait, faster and cooler running processors. Yes, that will be the difference.

There is no way that Jobs is giving away the farm here guys, He is a world champion control freak and will not do that. Mac OS X will not run on every plain Jane (apologies to Jane, who may or may not be plain) PCs out there.

if os x is there for x86 only mac - it will only be a matter of time before some pc nutter hacks it and makes it work for there £300 dell

So if that is the case, why Intel? Why!?
AMD has the cutting edge all the time, they are the underdog (as is Apple in market share), why not choose them with their faster and cooler, dual-core chips?

Can you run windows on MS's OWN XBOX? NO!
It's protected by all sorts of things not to mentioned specialized hardware (apple specific mobo manufactured by intel) that windows won't have drivers for.
So don't worry, this is a change for good...It will bring more people to macosX

11:04am PDT - Steve is back on now, restating the theme of this as Apple’s 3rd big transition. “It’s not gonna happen overnight. We’re making AWESOME machines right now” (Frequent comment in the press line: Will anyone buy one in the next year?) “When we meet again here next year, we will have products with Intel processors entering the market.” Next year he’ll show Leopard. One non-boilerplate truth: “The soul of a Mac is its operating system.” Plus the slick industrial design, of course.

11:05am PDT - That’s it, show’s over!
