I don't really have time at the moment to find the research and facts to prove you wrong, ...
Windows 95 was software. System 7.5 was software. Having have time to research the facts is not an excuse for posting nonsense. Repeating nonsense given to you by friends is also not an excuse.

The fact the manager let him just plug in was interesting enough. We don't let any 3rd party system connect to our network without our folks going over it first to ensure there's no immediate danger. We actually had a contractor with a Linux system and a cron job that would nmap the network when it had a link. Needless to say, we politely said no thanks and it was not connected.

Kind of reminds me of some of our network security policies. There are some empty ethernet ports in one of the training rooms in our building. Above it there is a warning telling users not to plug anything into them. Apparently it will lock out all of the ports in the room if someone plugs something in. We have no WiFi in the building (thank God for 3G), and I'm currently connected to a 10Mb connection, which is horrible for constantly transmitting CAD drawings and references.

At least we still have use of internet access and the USB ports on our computers (for now anyway).

I've met and had to aid people just as stupid and ignorant about IT and guess what they used Macs. Stupidity is platform agnostic and in my experience those who use Macs tend to be less IT aware on the whole. Why? Macs are advertised as being easier to use, so are more likely to be used by those who are not techy.
Smug and superior atttudes like those shown in this thread are exactly why I don't advertise I use a Mac, as people will often assume you're up yourself because of this sort of asinine nonsense.

I am sorry but everyone has taken this thread in the complete wrong way. I do not feel that arrogant at all towards PC's as I have had to use them for my work placement inputting variables into the database. I did not directly in any way say "oh Macs are so much better" to my manager. This is not a large company at the moment and only has a select handful of staff.

"stupidity is platform agnostic" is a fantastic phrase, which applies to almost all people. I am not one of those however, i not only have a few tricks up my sleeves but I am better educated in IT than most 16 year olds. Obviously, I am only at the very beginning of this, and others have much more experience and time in IT than I do.

making assumptions that I am just another teenager, arrogant and rude is completely irrelevant.

I apologise if that was the message I was putting through to you but it is actually the complete opposite.

bahahahahaha excellent story!!!

i hate the windows people that are so naive, not all of them are but it really gets on my nerves!

Probably never bothered to find out if Macs actually worked with the computer environment. Perhaps a previous PC (or PCs) didn't work and he thought "new computers won't work" regardless of brand.

I mean, there are a lot of people with that mindset.

afraid of change they are. (or intimidated by it).

Probably so. It's like an old guy who works as an engineer. Some of those old folks hate using computerized systems relying many times on their head to do stuff. New graduates in engineering simply punch in stuff to the computer which makes life easier....

Change is terrifying to them old folks... in general, change is always terrifying.

yup well said. even now as a 20 year old i can see myself falling into that category a bit. i am still running 10.5.5 with the old safari, i have already downloaded 10.5.7 and its good to go.. but yea im fine where i am (maybe its the lazyness coming out in me).

as an IT person though i understand that our technology changes basically daily, so of course i keep up in that regard.

I was thinking about that yesterday. Old guys dont have computers or in some cases tv's.

Me when im old, racking up the massive computer system with surround sound tv!

everything will plug into your head by the time we are that old 😉

yeah i guess so 😀 But still. I would die if I were living like my grandparents are now.

My 67 year old grandma just got her first pc with vista. Big mistake.
Everythings too complicated for her. Im going to go over and explain 😀

Head? Whoever needs a head in a virtualized environment, you can be any shape you want!😀

hahahaahha great point! i would be a transformer 😛

Try getting rid of all nagware, bloatware and trialware that comes with the Vista Hell machine.

Also, set-up huge icons. Always helps the eyes on old people😉

Yeah that does sound like a good idea. I wanted to get her a mac mini, but my dad is the same. "ooohh no, nothing will work with that! we will just get her a simple laptop."

hmm😕

oh damn... give your dad a flogging for me haha!!!

what is UAC ? Do we have it on mac ?

User Account Control, we kinda have it.. its things like when you need to type in your admin password on Mac.. but in windows it pops up ALL the time.. just let the computer do its work i say!

Simple? Well, if you delete off Vista, then I guess it's simple. If I were you, I would have made a small demonstration of the horrible aspects of Vista compared to OS X.

Like the UAC from hell, the never ending hoard of viruses, the ever so familiar parade of crashed and unknown errors and the friendlier now maintenance on your PC notices.

Maybe you can trade with Grandma and make her life easier? A Mac Mini has so much ease of use.

... but in windows it pops up ALL the time.. just let the computer do its work i say!

All the time? How about every freaking second! *clicking Safari* *UAC pop-out* Safari (insert browser name here) has been started, continue y/n?

*clicks make screen lighter* *UAC pop-out* Your screen is becoming brighter, allow y/n?

Imagine this for the most common tasks and you can picture the UAC from hell.
