Something went wrong with the new models, but what?

Back to IBM's 5100 to find a hardware presentation this underwelming!

well, yes some of them would be nice.

especially blu-ray finally.

U didnt really answer my question, thats obviously your wishlist, but were you REALLY expecting them? If so, based on what?

ESPECIALLY a new line of computers?

so, no new hardware? we all new about the 17 inch macbook pro!

.....

So "knowing" about something a few days before means its not new?

Man im going to hate those "old" next generation space shuttles.

That being said im srry you guys didnt get everything you hoped for, but its just January and big things are deffinatly coming this year.

Apple believes Blu-Ray is dead (or going to be dead soon), they are pushing streaming content over AppleTv.

I kinda agree with this thought--Apple is always on the cutting edge and Blu-Ray is a stop gap between DVD and digital download/streams in HD. I'm not sure I'll ever even buy a Blu-Ray player. My nice Pioneer DVD player will have to totally kick the bucket and Pioneer or Panasonic or somebody will have to be selling a killer Blu-Ray player for like $120 or less for me to even consider it over just going straight to like an Apple TV setup or something of the sort. And lets be honest--most people just want to see Blu-Ray incorporated into an Apple desktop or laptop for the fun of saying they have it. I remember owning a Dell laptop 5 years ago that had a DVD burner which was cutting edge at the time. In the 3 years I had that laptop guess how many times I used my DVD burner? 3 or 4.

Just for comparison, this keynote was right on par with the pre-iPhone Steve Jobs' keynotes.

For example ...

In 2008, Apple TV Take 2 update, MacBook Air, new iPhone firmware and Time Capsule

In 2007, iPhone announcement (shipped June), Apple TV announcement (shipped March), AirPort Extreme (802.11n, non-gigabit)

In 2006, iLife '06, iWork '06, MacBook Pro and iMac — that's it.
In 2005, iLife '05, iWork '05, iPod shuffle and the Mac mini — that's it.
In 2004, iLife '04, iWork '04, iPod mini, Final Cut Express — that's it.

Expectations for these events have just gotten out of control.

Agreed we shouldn't expect Apple to crank out dazzling new products each year. However, we should at least get some regular bumps in performance -- take the mini -- it's gained popularity as a media server and is way overdue for an upgrade. We all would have been happy with increases in memory capacity and CPU speed and an update from wireless G to N. This shouldn't have been a big deal for Apple.

Got that right, which is why it will be a much scaled down deal at a town hall event.;)

From a very long time Mac fanatic

That was the worst Macworld I have ever seen! For years now I have been excited to see all of the new and great Apple products rolled out. It was always a big event for loyal Mac fans to watch. A very disappointing way for Apple to end their days at Macworld. I think that we are seeing the end of an era with Apple dumping us fans by the side in favor of Apple stores, instead of real world conferences where Mac Addicts can meet and share.

A big thumbs down to Apple.......:mad:

Surprisingly weak keynote.

Blu-ray should be supported, because then we can at least burn and backup on optical discs with much more space than regular dvd. So typical Apple to be the only one not give consumers this option, and instead come up with lame excuses to protect their HD downloads. It's plain annoying.

Loved it!

Getting married in just a few months, so I'm not really in the market for new hardware. I'm totally up for some new software, though. iLife looks fantastic. The new stuff in iPhoto is great and iMovie really does look great. I was looking for Pages to get more features before I bought Scrivener and it totally did. I can buy music over 3G on my iPhone.. that means I can be on a road trip and, think of a song I want, buy it, and listen to it.

I'm sure the rest of the desktop updates are being saved for a desktop event, probably closer to Leopard's release. That really is what you should take away from Apple leaving Macworld; that Apple will be announcing things throughout the year. I'll be excited when I have a little more money saved up and can get a Mac Pro. The i7 is gonna be a very nice machine, indeed.

Kudos to Phil Schiller for doing a commendable job. He had enormous shoes to fill and I was very impressed. I expect him to be back.

I'm sort of glad that there was no Mac mini update.

But that's only because I gave up on it a couple of months ago and built a Hackintosh instead.

If they had finally updated it, I probably would have caved in and ended up buying one anyway, even though the Hackintosh is working perfectly.

Hi

I really like Phil Schiller. He came across as a good, honest person. Someone I would work well with.

I just finished watching the Keynote and I thought it wasn't as bad as people are saying it is. Phil did a great job and made it even seem like Steve was there. Now that I have watched it, the 17-in MBP sounds even better than I thought when I first heard about it. And Tony Bennett at the end was a big surprise.

Ha Ha Ha. The Mac Mini is dead. Gone, baby gone. Give it up folks!

Why a comment like this? Are you a Pro-PC guy, Anti-Apple/Mac or part of the Apple community?

Seriously, just asking. Trying to understand the logic.

EDIT: just searched his posts. 'splains it all. nothing but driveling crap and loads of negativity.

TROLL.

I understand the iMac and Mac Pro as the chips aren't ready, but the mini has no excuse. Apple really should have at least speed bumped it in the last 518 days.

The big question is what does this mean for Snow Leopard? It looks like we will see a Snow Leopard demo at WWDC. We have to remember that Apple can hold WWDC anytime between May and August. It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect Snow Leopard directly before or after (more likely) Windows 7.

I agree on both parts, I think he did a great job. He's no steve but he still came off well and his boyish enthusiasm was fun to watch.

I still think it was a good keynote, the new software is just great. Apple continues to amaze me with its tight integration of software.

not happy jan

i was really disapointed with this keynote. i was about to buy an imac when i heard about the macworld thing (im new to macs and stuff) and the possibility of an upgraded imac. looks like im gonna hav to wait a little bit longer then

I just got done watching the keynote and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The expectations people set are way too high, perhaps at Apple's own doing. They can't release TONS OF GREAT HARDWARE at once and expect to do well the rest of the year with news and releases. Plus if they offer hardware updates every year and only do a small part or two, people still bitch. So it's a no-win situation and you must take what you're given in terms of an entertaining show.

The fact of the matter is, it was time for some new software and I don't think they disappointed at all in my book. Great additions to an already powerful iWork and iLife set of suites. I appreciated the iTunes news, also.

I was in the market for a MacBook Pro last year, and when they didn't announce a new 17" at Macworld, I was disappointed. However, I knew it was coming and a couple months later, sure enough it did. Apple pulled out of Macworld to release things on their own time, instead of the horribly-timed show shortly after Christmas and New Year's.

In my mind nothing will be as incredible as the iPhone keynote, but that doesn't mean they can't show off other products whether they're interesting or not to some. Those things need updating too and I'm quite happy to see it shown off. I thought the demos given were very interesting and Phil and company did a solid job.

Many thanks to Apple for a couple hours of good entertainment. It most certainly helped solidify my appreciation for this company even further and also makes me look forward to the year to come with more fun announcements and keynotes, perhaps from Steve.

Good job Apple!

Ian

Give em a break! Have you ever done engineering research? Things take time. Stuff happens. Ideas don't always pan out. Stuff happens. It's in their best interest to give us a product we want in a timely manner that works like its supposed to for a long time. That's not as easy as Steve Jobs and Apple make it look. Good riddance to MacWorld expectations!
Now every Tuesday could be an Apple Tuesday :)

Yes, I have done engineering research. And if you tell the bosses that the reason the products aren't ready is that "stuff happens," you'll soon be looking for another position!

All in all, it wasn't a bad keynote. I think some of the new features of iLife sound pretty impressive; I'll probably pony up the 99 for the family pack. The iWork didn't really sell me, though. A few new themes? New transitions... did I miss something there?

ESPECIALLY at apple.
