Don't get me wrong, iWork is great, the new features just don't justify the cost of the upgrade at this time, for me.
:)

For those like me that haven't used iWork previously, the new features may get us to switch.

Let me guess, you get paid by the hour. Salaried people like me do not think 79 bucks is much. Heck, my monthly bill for my iPhone service cost more than that "before" taxes.
I get paid by the hour and do not think $79 is all that much, either.

It has nothing to do with how you're paid, it has to do with perception of value. Obviously, some do not feel that iWork '09 justifies the $79 price tag, as there's nothing of major significance in it. Others feel exactly the opposite, and believe that the major new changes and improvements are easily worth the $79.

I've got much of the same opinion.

There's no reason to be angry that the rumoured products weren't released, since they were only a rumour in the first place. And with the new 17" MBP (as with most of the macs), one of the main things I'm disappointed about is the price. $4500 AU!
(The prices have now risen even more, since the Aussie $ isn't too great. Luckilly I got a clearance model 15" Early 2008 MBP, for $2200 AU.)

On the software part of the keynote. I won't be buying it untill Snow Leopard comes out, because of the "Mac Box Set". (, currently with Leopard). $279 AU with iLife, iWork and Leopard (then to be Snow Leopard). The new features of the software are 'nice', but I don't justify the need being worth the price.

Also the variable pricing in iTunes will be nice, since some songs, which are older, might be cheaper.

Mac Box Set for Snow Leopard

Has anyone heard any noises whether the Mac Box Set will include Snow Leopard when it is released?

That would make it very worthwhile, and significantly, worth waiting until 10.6 is released to pick up the '09' versions of the other suites.

i think this event really sums up what apple is trying to do, by moving away from big releases at mac world and simply staging their own events like the 'lets rock' one. I think that was a little experiment to see how it went. Now they think that is a much better way of doing things, so i think they will give out invitations to their own event soon, well soon, 1st/2nd quarter. With that event i think we can hope to see some new mini's etc.

No FullHD without Blu-Ray

I kinda agree with this thought--Apple is always on the cutting edge and Blu-Ray is a stop gap between DVD and digital download/streams in HD. I'm not sure I'll ever even buy a Blu-Ray player.

OK. But please explain, how can I use one of these gorgeous FullHD 1920x1080 flatscreen TVs, that are selling in great numbers currently, the way they were designed for without a Blu-Ray player? I mean watching video in true 1080p or at least 1080i.

Even if you are lucky enough to be able to buy or rent HD movies from iTunes (still not an option in whole Europe except UK), you only get 720p.

IMHO the only source of 1080p/i content currently is Blu-Ray. I have doubts, this will change within the next couple of years as most people don't have the bandwidth to receive 1080p downloads/streams.

Bit disappointing this year. No wonder Steve didn't make the short trip. I was hoping for some sort of glimpse of Snow Leopard...

So who else thinks there is an event planned for sometime during February to preview Snow Leopard and release the new Mini and upgraded iMac? Seems like a perfect time frame to me. Maybe the Mini and iMac will ship at the same time as Snow Leopard too.

I was off course disappointed that there wasn't any new iMacs, but I believe they will come soon and with Quad Core. I believe thats why they are delayed.

Otherwise Apple dig its magic trick once again with iLife 09. What superb great new features they added there. Great!!!

A few people refer to Steve not making the trip but in a couple of the crowd shots there looked like Steve was sitting in the audience, particularly at the very end of the stream there is a shot of a guy from the back in a black turtle neck and jeans.

Was Steve in the keynote audience or am I seeing visions of Steve!

No Mini, no deal

I agree with people who say the reason people are upset is because there was too much anticipation for new products.

After the leak about a new mini with nvidia gpu found in Leopard betas, I don't think, expecting a new mini was "too much anticipation for new products".

I'm waiting for an updated mini now for more than a year.

Frankly after this keynote and without the mentioned leak, I would have started shopping for a hacintosh media-center built from a Shuttle XPC.

Now I'm waiting a bit more. :(

But every patience has its limits. If Apple doesn't present a new mini within the next 2 month, I'll go the hackintosh route and Apple looses a customer. Sorry.

disappointment

Yes, they are rumors, but how long do we have to wait until they upgrade the desktop line. In these economic times, as I keep hearing, I think it would be important for Apple to show the base customers that they can have a new affordable but strong desktop computer.

I think the new iLife and iWork is ok, but I am tired of paying $79 annually each to purchase these products. I think a cheaper upgrade solution would be nice to owners who have paid since the beginning with these products. Really not feeling very excited about that.

Lastly, Apple has continued to make promises it hasn't fullfilled, such as with services on the iPhone. We keep waiting, but Apple keeps waiting to. If it is a matter of getting it right, just tell us. If it is a matter of a change it focus, tell us.

Overall, very disappointed. Don't care who gives the keynotes, I don't really care where they announce it, but they really need to get to keep pushing and not rest. This is a time for Apple to make a big push with quality, good cost to quality ratio, and communication to its customers.

shagless

Exactly. people are upset not because of the rumors but because products haven't been updated so far. As simple as that.

People buying their first Mac wouldn't have known about this MWSF, unless they are "informed" by so-called Apple-"insiders".

I'm waiting to buy my first Mac and I knew about MWSF. Some of us have been saving $$ a while now to get out first Mac while paying close attention to Mac news. Why would that surprise you?

all this situation at MW reminds me Al Pachino's character John Milton from Devil's Advocate.

May I cite ?

Look but don't touch. Touch, but don't taste. Taste, don't swallow. Ahaha. And while you're jumpin' from one foot to the next, what is he doing? He's laughin' His sick, ......! He's a sadist! He's an absentee landlord!

Oh man, I want see that movie again, now! I wonder if AppleTV has it...

iPhone Nano

So much for the almost "definite" iphone nano, you FOOLS! it's a stupid idea and it wont ever eventuate, all the crap online was about that knock off chinese crap, so i hope that you learnt a lesson from this keynote and it's a good enough one to drop the rumors cause there will be NO! iphone nano.

I can see your point with this one - I don't own one that does 1080p - just 720p so I don't have that frame of reference and you are probably right about bandwidth, but I think that will progress as well -- bandwidth for the average user will increase over the next few years to catch up with the latest offerings just like it has over the last few years.

Your Right

Yes, I have done engineering research. And if you tell the bosses that the reason the products aren't ready is that "stuff happens," you'll soon be looking for another position!

I didn't mean it the way you took it. I didn't mean we made a mistake "stuff happens" I meant, this is research. You are on cutting edge technology that nobody knows exactly how it's going to pan out. That's what it takes to innovate and all the time tables in the world won't help you. If we could do it correctly the first time it wouldn't be called research.

I don't often post here, just browse for new Apple info, but this one deserves a post. I was actually suprised that they DID announce the 17" MBP and I am not at all suprised by the lack of other hardware announcements. I have a feeling that this month will see major hardware upgrades though and here is my reasoning as to why:

- The rumours and leaks about new iMacs and a new Mini with the nVidia chipsets were just too abundant and too detailed.

- The iMac and Mac Pro are due for a hardware upgrade and the Mini is waaayyyy overdue for one.

- The mini for sure could have had a speed and storage bump quite easily with little to no extra cost to Apple.

- The persistent Mini end of life rumours we have heard over the last year

- and most importantly, January 24th is the 25th anniversary of the Mac

So here is what I think could happen based on that information..........

I believe we could see some type of anniversary event on or about the 24th (yes, I know it's a Saturday) where Apple will announce one or more new Macs. Possibly a redesigned iMac and an entirely new Mac to replace the Mini. It would explain all the above and tie into Apple's stated desire to release products on their own schedule with the MWSF announcements being just enough for the keynote.

This is just my purely baseless speculation but I believe this is what we could quite easily see.
