Wait, wait. Now just hold on. Wait a minute. No Firewire???

They did say 2 processors, but I guess they didn't understand properly. Check the store out btw. They've bumped the price of the iMac and MacBook Pro for us brits! :(
Going from the PowerBook to MacBook Pro, it's only £30 so hardly breaking the bank. For that you get a faster machine, IrDA remote and built in iSight for starters.

After staff discount, £1257.52 for me with 2 year guarantee. :D

Three issues.

1. What the HELL is "express card"? Why didn't they keep the PC card with it!
2. What is the battery life! 60 watt-hour Li-Polymer, sounds nice but I want to see what it's rated at.
3. Can't believe they dropped FW 800.

Many thanks to MacRumors for excellent coverage.

No Firewire 800 on the MacBook, I see this as bad news, it beats the c%$p out of USB2. Shame
Must own MacBook soon:D

How Does It Look?

Still Aluminium?

Same as it ever was. Somewhat sad about that. You'd think in what? 3 years Apple could wow us with something new. *shrugs* The design still is the best on the market though.

Firewire 800 gone though?

Maybe, if we are lucky, Firewire 800 just did not make it, these are all new chipsets and Intel is certainly not providing Firewire 800 support out of the box.

Is there any other PC-laptop that has Firewire 800?

Does anyone else think "MacBook Pro" is a stupid name?? Really. Who the hell came up with that? And honestly, what was wrong with PowerBook. The name definitely pre-dates PowerPC days, so it didn't really indicate the processor. Just the pro line of laptops.

Minor details, I know, but still. Dumb. Other stuff looks great, though.

another good thing Apple has done with the MacBook Pro, they come with a single SODIMM (rather than give you two smaller chips):

512MB (single SODIMM) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory on 1.67GHz configuration; and 1GB (single SODIMM) on 1.83GHz configuration; two SODIMM slots support up to 2GB

Express card is the next generation PC Card. Much MUCH MUCH greater bandwidth. Almost to the point you could put a video card in there.

HAHAHA! unbelievable! Nobody talked about an updated iMac until hours before the keynote...And you know what, it makes perfect sense!!

Where are the cheaper Macs that would let Apple Macs compete for wider market share?

I thought that that was one of the big pros of switching to Intel. I'm very disappointed with the price points.

And FrontRow 2.0 for those of us who already have Macs, and want the benefit of FrontRow? Hmm.

Not unless you're upgrading from iLife '04 ;) - a late Christmas present for myself I think.
Slightly OT - have they dropped the prices for the Cinema Displays? The 23" and 30" are at £949 and £1799 respectively. I thought they were a bit more than that.

New direction for Apple...

The new remote/FM tuner for the iPod is neat - too bad it won't work with mine. Maybe by this time next year, it will be fully integrated. Also, for some reason, I'm not excited about iLife '06. Maybe it's because it's so heavily integrated with .Mac. Also, the 35 MINUTES spent on iLife '06 was the death boring.

Anyhow, looks like Apple is going to start consolidating its laptop lines - no more 12", 15", 17" PBs, just the MacBook Pro. Which obviously means that the iBook replacement 13.2" rumors are probably true, and they'll probably be called just the MacBook.

The new iMac is pretty neat, too. Seems like it's Apple's best seller desktop, and they're trying to get a leg up on the PC market. Positioning its elegant design as the PC-killer. Of course, they couldn't update the iMac without updating the PB - it makes sense now, although the early rumors didn't indicate this.

Of course, being an early adopter has its drawbacks, too. Looks like the MacBook Pro and the Intel iMac will be running apps in Rosetta for at least the first part of 2006. Perhaps this is why the PPC versions are still for sale at the Apple store.

I dunno, seeing new innovation with the Intel stuff is pretty exciting - OTOH, I'm still rather content with my current iMac, and expect to remain as such for more years to come. By then, the Intel stuff (if you believe Intel's roadmap) will be sporting quad-core processors.

Is it just me, or were folks expecting just a little more from this year's keynote? Maybe a Mini update to boost (featuring the single core Intel chips), or some information on Leopard?

I wonder how many PC geeks will buy these and erase OS X and just install Windows XP... that's seriously a very nice laptop at a competitive price even in the PC world.

Weak

They just upgraded the iMac a few months ago!!! And I bought one!!! Damnit!

The MacBook Pro is weak. I have NO interest in a large laptop. Laptops should be portable and I'd rather have something in the 13.3" range weighing in less than 4lbs. I wonder if this laptop even has something like XBrite in their displays?

I'll give it til Spring, but if they don't come out with a decent, small laptop, I guess I'm finally switching to the Vaio and dual booting with Linux and a hacked OS X.

Kudos to Macrumors, though, on their coverage. Nice use of AJAX and plenty of bandwidth for those of us that had to tune in late.
