Does anyone else think "MacBook Pro" is a stupid name?? Really. Who the hell came up with that? And honestly, what was wrong with PowerBook. The name definitely pre-dates PowerPC days, so it didn't really indicate the processor. Just the pro line of laptops.

Minor details, I know, but still. Dumb. Other stuff looks great, though.

I guess this way it's a new product, new price... plus they're still selling the G4 Powerbook so less confusion maybe?

Although they're still selling the G5 iMac too.

Two issues.

1. What the HELL is "express card"? Why didn't they keep the PC card with it!

ExpressCard is the next gen of PCMCIA standards. Kind of a hybrid USB/PCI Express interface. I can't seem to find anyone who makes any ExpressCard expansion cards at the moment....

They did say 2 processors, but I guess they didn't understand properly. Check the store out btw. They've bumped the price of the iMac and MacBook Pro for us brits! :(

about £30, or even more? I don't remember the old price for imac

Where have firewire 800 and DL DVD-R burners gone?

What has happened to firewire 800 and the DL DVD-R burners?
The built in isight look great though.
Glad to see they are budling 1GB of Ram

I'll be waiting for the 17" to come out.

I was checking out the (unchanged) iPod shuffles on the Apple online store, I notice they have free laser engraving (which goes on the side of the shuffle). Did they always have this? I can't remember...

I'll give it til Spring, but if they don't come out with a decent, small laptop, I guess I'm finally switching to the Vaio and dual booting with Linux and a hacked OS X.

Give it til WWDC. No doubt they will have the single cores out by then. They HAVE to have a low end option for students. $2000 starting is asinine otherwise.

I had my heart set on a 12/13" intel laptop... Can anyone give me ANY reason not to just settle for a new intel iMac???
Any conferences in March (my birthday) that lead to a smaller macbook???

Screen is slightly smaller: 1440x900 vs. 1440x960

Still only 2 GB maximum RAM.

No Dual-Layer DVD writing, only reading (or am I missunderstanding something?).

Almost yes.

Its too new at the moment. Wait until this fall next summer as more chipsets and system start shipping with EC. If Apple builds it- they will come. :)

im not a very happy camper. as far as im concern apple can kiss me away cause im not going to waste my time with their products anymore. anyone know if 10.4.4 will work for non-apple-expensive-computers?

I'm waiting for a single core too. 1799 after student dicount is way too steep for me. all to use MS Office and all that basic stuff. and 13.3 widescreen would be too small for me. Got to have a 15"

Going from the PowerBook to MacBook Pro, it's only £30 so hardly breaking the bank. For that you get a faster machine, IrDA remote and built in iSight for starters.

After staff discount, £1257.52 for me with 2 year guarantee. :D

I know £30 isn't much but it's just a bit annoying when they say they kept the price the same, but only in the USA. Here's to hoping the exchange rate goes £1 = $2 and we get cheaper Macs here :)

I think the best part of the MBP is that Mobility X1600. Coupled with Core Duo makes a deadly team :D

The Macbook update makes sense to me: these same chips will make their way down the foodchain as new ones become available.

My only complaint would be the continued lack of ports on the laptop. What is it about Apple that they can't give more USB ports. I bought a Toshiba for my daughter for Christmas that costs less than half what the Apple will cost and comes with a load of ports.

One firewire is fine because of daisy chaining, I suppose -- though two would be far better.

oh well, I'm waiting until they introduce a 17" model, lower the price of the 15.4", etc.

Final point, since it is hard to post here right now: Jobs promised Intel products and delivered. All the others will appear in due time. For me, his 3.0 prediction is now ancient history and a new era begins.

The dollar is about the collapse: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/09/AR2006010901042.html

Soon you'll be buying those Macs for half what we pay.

I guess time was short, so they focussed on getting one Intel laptop out. iBooks and different size will follow in the next months, at the lastest by WWDC.

How bizzare - the drive can't do dual layer burning??? I wonder why...

Wow. They did get rid of FireWire 800. And they didn't even replace it with anything better? I must say though. Everything besides the name is fscking awesome on the MacBook Pro. I'm a little scepticle on those benchmarks, but none the less, Mac users will be in for a treat on this one. I have decided to wait for 2007 and the Merom 64-bit Core Duo before upgrading.

Kudos to Macrumors, though, on their coverage. Nice use of AJAX and plenty of bandwidth for those of us that had to tune in late.

Yeah, that was the best Keynote update page I've ever seen. VERY slick. Nice job!

64 Bit Computing!!

What Happened To 64 Bit Computing! I Know These Knew Powerbooks Are Faster Than The Last, But I Thought Some Kind Of 64 Bit Processing Was The Future. Isn't That Where Windows Vista And Other Software Heading????
