This year, we've declared 2006 as the Year of the Smart Home. We are pleased to announce the addition of the xBook, xPlug, Airport XS, and xPod while providing a substantial update to OS X Server. We've also expanded our iSight line with the addition of the xSight.

To begin, we're updating OS X Server and the Xserve, to bring you OS X Server HA, your home media solution. The heart of home automation begins with a solution for distributed audio and video, which we have provided with the release of the iDVR, a digital video recorder and mass storage solution. You may remember iDVR from before our acquisition of TiVo. Of course, hardware is only half of the solution, so we have partnered with such companies as Perceptive Automation, makers of Indigo, and BenSoft, creators of SecuritySpy.

On to the xBook, an 8" touch screen tablet designed for use in the home. The xBook can be carried from room to room or mounted vertically on a wall. Communicating wirelessly with the Xserve HA, the xBook terminal can control home appliances using Indigo or view surveillance cameras with SecuritySpy, using a whole house diagram provided by our recent acquisition of Premier Architect from the now defunct Abracada. We will also be releasing the Premier Architect/Landscape suite as a standalone product, soon.

How do you control your home appliances, you ask? The new xPlug couples the Airport Express with Insteon technology and includes the option to expand its capability with a hardwired USB LabJack.

(Queue demo of Everyday Software's Maquarium controlling an aquarium's lighting, pumps, chiller, and probes using xPlug, followed by AgPro's ProFeeder using the xPlug to automatically feed a stable filled with horses.)

Granted, we'd like to take wireless technology beyond the home, and into the outdoors. For this we announce the Airport XS, providing a WiFi Hotspot of 3,000' in radius. To demonstrate this technology, we'd like to introduce BenSoft's SecuritySpy software, using the new xSight, a wireless network camera for use indoors and out. Containing infrared emitters, the XSight is capable of switching from daylight viewing in color to monochrome night vision using SecuritySpy. Optional accessories include an underwater housing and an adapter for your Meade telescope.

Of course, a smart home isn't just about turning on lamps and watching cameras. We are proud to announce a partnership with iRobot and Friendly Robotics, to bring you a new generation of the Romba automatic floor vacuum and Scooba automatic floor mop, both monitored and controlled by the xServe HA. Friendly Robotics, makers of the robomower, has partnered with Corbin Motors, makers of the Sparrow electric car, to create the iMow, a 60 horsepower tractor with optional bush hog and backhoe attachments.

Oh, and there is one more thing. Now for something we're extremely excited about, the xPod. The xPod is a wearable device, which remotely monitors the user's location and vital signs, while providing communication via an on-board microphone and speaker. For use within the range of an Airport XS, the xPod may be used to monitor the condition of a sick child or to keep track of a family pet. Hospitals and daycares have already expressed an interest in this new technology. The imbedded microphone may also be used to provide voice commands to the Xserve HA. When outside of the range of the Airport XS, the xPod integrated seamlessly with the iPhone. Oh, did I forget to mention the iPhone?

What, you were expecting iBooks and Mac Minis today?

You don't honestly believe any of the things you just wrote do you? That was just a dumb joke right? Will you please write a comment of what you honestly predict! That MWSF won't happen for another 5-10 years.

don't these guys also manufacture the iBooks...? this lloks like a carbon copy of what were going to see tuesday. the only difference being the OS.

Have to agree with Peace, that camera is plain ugly.
I´m sure Apple will make something better if they decide to go that way.
It would be nice if it was some kind of sliding "door" infront of the lens . That would help for security reasons as well

Joke...yes Dumb?...no I need most of those products today ;)

Distributed Audio/Video solutions are available today, as are lighting and home automation solutions from Lutron and Crestron. Indigo coupled with Insteon, products available today, will help with the automation aspects, while SecuritySpy, also available today, can monitor a host of networked cameras from the likes of Panasonic and Toshiba. At NES, TiVo showed off a prototype of the Series 3 unit, but don't expect Mac support until the middle of the year. as for the xBook, a Mac Mini coupled with a small monitor retrofitted with a touchscreen by Troll Touch will have to do, for now. For a wifi hotspot, one can always turn to the d-link DWL-2700AP.

That is what I believe is their plan. Many "internet savvy" people have already ditched cable and satellite. They get most of their "content" as BitTorrents online. Those are the people I think Apple wants to go after first. Apple wants to compete with that by making it easier to obtain content and still making a buck on it. Similar to what they did with music.

I agree. I haven't had a home phone in five years. People are definitely receptive to ditching even established technology when something better comes along. Any kind of Apple "cable killer" strategy, though, is still going to require cable access. If Apple is going to take on cable, the cable carriers could retaliate by raising the price of a la carte internet service relative to the cost of cable and internet together.

If Apple has "cable killer" plans for providing TV and film content, Wall Street hasn't caught wind of it. Comcast was up for the week, and there are no news stories spreading any kind of cable fear.

My only personal issue with what Apple is doing is they have not yet "replaced" CDs or DVDs. They are not delivering the same quality those two formats can deliver. I mean, c'mon, it's 2006, can we get full quality songs and shows? They already have DRM. Where's the problem? What are we waiting for? In that respect, I do no believe they have replaced the media delivery form factor yet with online delivery.

I'm with you part of the way on this. Apple's AAC encoding is not technically CD quality, but it's good enough. I don't think that comparing the quality difference in AAC/CD to the quality difference in iTunes TV downloads to HD/SD are very close comparisons.

AAC is good enough for 99 percent of listeners (including me), and there's no realy push for wide availability of lossless tracks. But any kind of large-display content is going to have to get a huge quality boost from the low-quality video tracks iTunes is selling today. And Apple knows that, so I'm not too worried about a crappy iTunes TV box hitting the market. I think any kind of living room strategy Apple puts out will be built around higher quality video -- and probably HD or the promise that it's coming soon.

It would let you hook up the Airport Express to a TV, and then stream videos from your computer, onto your TV. You wouldn't have to bother with DVD's anymore (and you could just play home movies straight from the computer).

I don't think there will be one at MWSF though.

Ok, thanks so much! I don't know if I'd use that that much.... I actually have to admit, I don't have an Airport Express right now. Wi-fi internet from a Linksys box.
I guess I doubt to see the Aiport express w/ video at MWSF.... I just don't think it's something crucial that will happen right now. If it did happen, would Airport Express come standard w/ video or would that be extra/a different thing? Or do we not know that?

I would bet on two seperate versions of it just because i thing the video one migh be to expensive. Therefore apple would give you the oppurtunity to pick one.

Knowing Apple, it would just be a part of the Airport Express, just like AirTunes is part of it now. So no, you would not have to pay extra for it. (probably)

I'm sitting in the Marriott one black from MacWorld, and was wondering what I'd see during the keynote. I came to the conclusion that it's unimportant. What IS important is what wine to have with dinner.
13" iBook
Wireless iPod
Intel Mini, iBook, Powerbook.

Anyone notice how quiet ThinkSecret is?

Worringly quiet! Maybe there'll be some stuff on monday... It's just over 36 hours untill the start of the Stevenote!

I really need a damn laptop.

I need to get off this windows evil machine.

Let's say that everything goes to plan and they do release it, how long does it usually take until you can actually get the product?

I swear, as soon as I get my iBook, this windoze is getting the hammer.

No kidding! Usually we have full specs by now. Here's what we got so far: iBook with Intel processor (no mention of speeds) with probably 12" and 13.3" widescreen versions. That's it. Don't know if lawsuits from the past are keeping them quiet, or if they just don't know jack this time around. But disappointing, nonetheless! :(

The mention of an 8 inch touchscreen might be far out there, but with Apple who knows.

Maybe the Nokia 770 is not all that popular, but with Apples interjection into this design they could come up with a real lifestyle product.

8 or 10 inch touchscreen, wifi, bluetooth, docking station, acts as a remote media control centre, VOIP, surfing, email, iTunes, wow the list is endless, a sort of Newton Mac Mini.

Anyway, back to reality, I strongly hope that whatever they release (here's hoping for an iBook or PBook) that it is shipping straight away. I am one of those impatient types and if I see it I want it, I do not want to wait one or two months to get my mitts on it.

On a side note, apart from MacRumors, any other good live feeds of the news around on the web?

don't know if this is true or not but check it out. shots of a possible 6G iPod to be announced at MWSF this week.

While anything is possible, I do not expect 802.11g coming out on an iPod. With 802.11n coming up soon, they probably don't want to be updating. I do, however expect them to go Bluetooth, aswell as usb support (for peecee users who don't want to double the value of their computer by buying a $0.99 bt dongle of ebay). I take it there is about 28 hours and 12 minutes 'til the event? Me being 16 hours ahead of the timezone means I wait an extra day :( (Half a day due to being ahead in time :p)

i cancelled my powerbook order at my local apple store and told them i wanted to wait for the intel versions. i also asked if i could put in a pre-order for the intel version so i didnt have to wait in line for it, he replied that since they didnt have any order numbers on it, he couldnt reserve one for me, but he hoped they would be there on the 10th of january, and i should just pay attention to their sites.

dont know what to lable it as, probably pure speculation from his side, as i doubt apple has told anything to different apple stores (although this is the biggest chain of apple stores in norway)

Completely not true... It's nice Photoshop work but Apple would never make a scroll wheel like that (it serves no purpose being that wide)..plus just take a look at the class of photography on their site and tell me that this looks like an Apple product shot.. If it is not an Apple shot and just a leak then why go to such effort to set it up...

Finally if you look at the shot of the current video iPod next to the supposed new one then all the heights are incorrect.... when people make photoshop frauds and spend this amount of time they really should try a little harder.. :)

Its pure speculation I'm afraid - the folks in the shops know as much as we do until the Man in a Black roll-neck takes the stage.....

Those specs benefit consumers, so that doesn't fit into Apple's plan. We may see Bluetooth in the 20G iPod though.
