Dominator, these thing isn't going to change the world, but it's EXACTLY what I had been waiting for years.

inor software/firmware updates across the board, a Mac Pro update, and the ultraportable.
No tablet, no new iPhone, and only incremental updates to some of the Macs.
No Blu-Ray, no new models LED-backlit screens besides the ultraportable.
Displays untouched.
New iSight in a new form factor, but basically like the built-in ones in the iMac and MB/MBPs and missing a lot of functionality and power from the old ones. Not useful for Pros.
Growl introduced in iPhone and Apple TV varieties.
New iPhone SDK, of course, but

That sounds about right to me, but I don't believe there'll be an ultraportable. The rest is basically bad news or no news, so I can dig it. Over the past few years, I've learned to temper my expectations of Apple :/

I wonder what the new Apple TV firmware will bring.

I'm at a loss for words as to how to reply to this. It clearly states on the linked page that Apple is supporting both formats, and even mentions the BR board membership. In addition, also as mentioned on that page, DVD Studio Pro can author HD DVDs. I don't know why you think that Apple would never support HD DVD when its website says the opposite.

HD-DVD is dead, the format war is over.

https://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/04/hd-dvd-vs-blu-ray-battle-over-warner-switches-to-blu-ray/

More evidence of Blu Ray winning the format war is amazon's top seller list. 14 of the top 35 DVDs right now are blu ray, including all 4 of the top 4. The best selling HD-DVD is at #36, which is also the only HD-DVD in the top 60 best sellers.

fan-fiction

Link is dead.
Hasn't this traditionally been fans writing about what they hope to see? It's written in the same style last year's was, and it was off by a large margin. ...
Indeed. :(

I wish MacRumors (and everyone else), would stop referring to these as "transcripts" at all. They simply aren't.

Transcripts are written after the fact; they are literally transcriptions of what was said. If that is what these writings purport to be, then they cannot be anything but speculative, "fantasy" transcripts. Let's all just call them that.

We are talking about fan-fiction here, not facts; not even rumours of fact.

These "transcripts" are often presented in a format that mimics the sort of "cheat sheets" a presenter might need on stage. Without ever saying it outright, we are also expected by the creators to entertain the idea that this might be the very sheet of paper handed to Steve Jobs  as he walks out on stage.

However these "transcripts" cannot be that either. No one would have a cheat sheet that said to "Quickly announce the aluminium mouse,..." or any of the other cheesy asides and stage directions contained in these tomes.

Really? Lately, it seems to be if there are there are this many rumors about one product, it'll come true. In 2007, it happened with the iPhone, iMac, Fat Nano, and the iTouch. I'm thinking that there's at least a 97% chance of the ultra-portable.

Yeah, but for two or three Macworld Keynotes before that, there were rumors about touch-screen iPods, etc. So, perhaps now that the rumor mill has become so active, we'll see an ultraportable in a year or two. ;)

Actually, as Apple tends to like to release "revolutionary" products at Macworld, I think they probably will at this one. What, I don't know, but it's bound to be exciting.

He then reminds us that the “Nano” used to be “Mini” and brings up the existence of the Mac Mini. Steve then unveils the “Mac Nano,” a redesigned Mac Mini that is approximately half the height of its predecessor and in an anodized aluminum shell to match recent design changes in the Apple lineup. The Mac Nano will come in two flavors, 2.0 GHz and 2.2 GHz (using current Santa Rosa chips)

All things point to this really happening!

I just hope they release a new laptop/tablet priced below current MacBooks... A man can dream...

What things?

-rumors, speculation, Apple refreshing a product line, spy photos, giving a user base an X3100 after constant public outcry for a better GPU, Apple's drive to make things smaller and sleeker, shifting white products to aluminum, the current desktop Mini doesn't fit in your pocket...the Nano might!
Sorry I was vague with the term "things" on a rumor site. Reminds me of the time I mentioned to someone I was gonna "pop" a hard drive in an iMac and I was asked if I meant "popping in the HD" was me casually referring to the quick physical task of manually installing a new hard drive.

I just hope they release a new laptop/tablet priced below current MacBooks... A man can dream...

I heard rumors months ago that that's what was going to happen. A lower level laptop. Now the rumors have shifted in many ways. I'm hoping for like, an $800 or less laptop to get for my mom.

The new Macintosh will come in two standard configurations, 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz with a standard 2GB of memory and SuperDrive, however featuring a single PCI-E graphics slot and accommodation for two, vertically mounted, hard drives with sizes of up to 1TB each.

You'll need to think this one through again - a PCI-E graphics slot will require a chassis that is much longer than the Mac Mini's, if you actually intend to install a video card into it...

Transcript #1: Said that the 12” MacBook Pro was sort of like the PowerBook G5--everyone wanted it, but it was never meant to happen.

On this point alone, I call bull. There are 12" C2D laptops with discreet graphics available. When it was the G5 part, Apple could claim that the CPU manufacturer couldn't provide a mobile part. Not any more. They can't hide behind the CPU anymore.

We KNOW what CPU's are available, we KNOW that a 12" laptop using these parts is possible.

We also know that Apple can make a slimmer 15" laptop than most manufacturers.

For Apple to claim they couldn't manage a 12" laptop would be pathetic because it would be an admission of a failure on their part alone.

Exactly... the people calling these "transcripts" just seem so ignorant.

These are fantasy outlines/speakers notes/scripts but they can't possibly be transcripts.
This isn't a matter of semantics, like calling a comic book a graphic novel, this is on the order of calling a tarot card reading a historical document.

Why can't anyone give us the whole package?

I don't understand why we can't get the whole package. Why can't computer companies like mac and others just get with the program and use all the new technologies available? How hard would it be to give us a 12 inch convertible Mac Tablet with a kick ass graphics card, a blueRay/HD-DVD optical drive and an LED High Def screen. I don't mean something with low clock speeds like the rest of the world seems to be doing with tablets...I mean 2.8 Ghz and an 512 Invidia 8800 GT or a 512 ATI/Saphire HD3870. Apple always says that they want to appeal to the multimedia type folks. I am a developer that does a lot of gaming and helmet cam Mountain Bike\ skiing movies as well. I want it all and I want it in HD! The only companies that seem to be trying to do this right is Toshiba and Fujitsu. Everyone know that Vista sucks so I for one am not buying a PC until the bugs are GONE! So Apple, if you come out with something good this year... something we really don't mind spending our money on, then I guarantee you that most people like me are going to go MAC crazy. There is a huge opportunity here because of the whole worlds frustration with Vista. I have been waiting for a MAC tablet for 2 years now. Come on already!

Your kidding right?

Why do we need the 8800GT? It's not a gaming machine and the 1900XT is MORE than capable.

Why do we need the Penryn which is only just released? I'd rather have a proven chip in my workstation thanks and without the premium of showroom pricing.

Explain the need for a high speed FSB. With serious comments please.

2 GB standard...ok, sounds great. What?

Realistic pricing - check. Got that already.

This reeks of gamer-esque whining... I really hope it isnt.

Come on buddy! Did you seriously say this is not a gaming machine? If this is not a gaming machine what other portable computer does Mac have that is one? Mac can not be the only PC manufacturer out there without a laptop that is gaming capable. The Mac Book Pro should be just that "PRO". It should have all the bells and whistles the Mac Book does not have or I for one will not pay the extra money for it. I am not going to buy one now as it is until they update it. If they don't update it this January I am going to be crushed. It is way overpriced for what is in it right now. I just bought a diamond 512 Radeon HD 3870 for $325.00. Why on earth do the Pro's still have 256 cards in them? The price just isn't worth it.

Did you miss the part where Apple really doesn't care about gaming much? This is clearly gamer whining.

I think Ansella is spot on. Its not just about the gaming. I think we would all love a little extra horsepower under the hood to cover anything we would like to do. I'm waiting to see what develops at the Expo also. This is primetime to stick it to MS and Vista. If you build it, they will switch !!

Did you mean No Things?
I've closely watched the life span of many Apple products for a long time, I hope the Mac mini isn't going to be replaced any time soon. I don't want to debate it, we'll all know in two weeks. With 5 versions out, I hope they keep improving it!

My [Realistic] Expectations

What I honestly expect at MacWorld:

Steve will come out and announce the numbers (every citizen of China bought an iPod touch this quarter!! And everyone and their brother downloaded from iTunes!! Fanfare!!)

1. Modest hardware upgrades for at least the Mac Pro; updated Intel processors (maybe some Intel rep with a ridiculous accent can announce this one, as usual). Everyone's right about the hardware being outdated, and I think Apple will recognize our plight, too.
2. New ultra-portable or tablet (or at least some notebook that sports the gunmetal everyone's been sighting - maybe a new finish option for the MB or MBP)
3. Updated Cinema Displays with iSight

Redesigns are going to be a stretch, and if there is anything it'll be to the notebooks. A Mac nano seems a little much, also, seeing as only a few months ago they were supposedly going to discontinue the mini.

An iPhone update is not happening, seeing as the thing was announced a year ago and released just six months ago. A 3G iPhone would piss as many people off as the price drop did, so I doubt Apple will drop that baby on us yet.

As for the whole Front Row 3 thing, I highly doubt Apple would be interested in the eyeTV idea. They could come out with some media station to monopolize on people's using Mac minis with their plasmas as media players, but then they could always just improve upon :apple:TV to make it a more popular item.

The BluRay idea is a nice one, but I wonder where Apple stands on the issue. Perhaps a dual-use BR/HD-DVD drive, for reading only (using the LG drive that someone brought up)? Who knows, but it would be nice.

As for the "transcripts," I have problems with both. While nice ideas, I fear they're just fanboys' dreams. And Steve better be in his trainers, or the world as I know it will collapse painfully around me.

I agree with a lot of what you said, however I do expect Apple to go Blu-Ray (especially now with the Warner announcement). They may leave HD DVD authoring in DVD Studio Pro 4, but will not provide the hardware, but then again, you never know.

As for the rest, I agree that the Mac Pro will likely get updated, as will the Cinema Displays. The Mac Nano might emerge to replace the Mini...might.

The iPhone will not be updated yet in terms of hardware, but I am expecting a major software update (at least the 1.1.3 that leaked anyway). The SDK might be demoed, or Apple might hold an entire separate keynote for that in februrary...who know's.

The ultra-portable Mac seems to be the most reliable rumor, so I expect that...what it will be and look like, who knows.

I expect Apple to release iTunes 8 and update the Apple TV at this event. HD downloads, rentals, and other new software features.

These are my guesses.

Steve enters from backstage and welcomes the audience, saying that he has some exciting things today for everyone but first he wants to go over numbers. Focusing on Mac sales and highest growth rate in the industry, before moving into the adoption rates for iPhone and Leopard.

Steve moves to center stage and starts his presentation about 1984, the year that the computing industry changed. The Apple logo on the screen behind him fades to the classic logo and pictures of the original Macintosh transition across the screens.

Steve: In 1984 the computer industry changed, the status quo was no longer acceptable and the future was born...the Macintosh. Today we will once again change the industry...ladies and gentlemen it is with no small amount of pride I present to you...the new Macintosh.

The screens behind him fade to black and rising from the stage in front of Steve appears the new Macintosh. A visual melding of the Mac Mini, Mac Pro, and the new iMac presenting a form factor of approximately 50% of the Mac Pro's height, the Mac Mini's width and length, made of anodized aluminum with a black glass front housing a vertical slot load optical drive, in the center of the black glass a glowing white Apple logo appears and the familiar startup chime sounds.

The new Macintosh will come in two standard configurations, 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz with a standard 2GB of memory and SuperDrive, however featuring a single PCI-E graphics slot and accommodation for two, vertically mounted, hard drives with sizes of up to 1TB each.

Steve announces that the new Macintosh is on sale today and shipping in february...
:apple:

lol, what if....

The new Macintosh will come in two standard configurations, 1 KHz with a standard 521K of memory and SuperDrive, however featuring a single PCI-E graphics slot and accommodation for two, vertically mounted, hard drives with sizes of up to whatever the Floppy can take.

NOSTALGIA FOR SOME PEOPLE!!!!

To start off, great screen name from a great movie.

Secondly, I forgot to mention anything about iTunes 8, and I expect movie rentals will be included. The iPhone SDK would be a treat, but I agree that they'd make that its own special iPhone event.

As for the BR/HD DVD issue, I really wonder which way Apple's going to go. I think they're both good options with tons of prospects for the future, but really it comes down to which will be in higher demand. I think Apple might offer both drives as high-end upgrades (UltraDrive? Haha) or just wait and see which one becomes more popular. Heck, maybe both.

I realize that Warner just went strictly Blu-ray AND that Apple's on the Blu-ray board, but Intel's on the HD DVD board, aren't they? I think we'll see both formats presented by Apple if they do it at MacWorld. If they do it any later, they'll have chosen one side or another.
