No...... but they could think about maybe putting CURRENT HARDWARE in it.

The ATI x1900xt hits TWO YEARS OLD this week. Worth $400?? I don't think so. Penryn? nVidia 8800GT? 1600 FSB? 2 gigs standard? Realistic pricing?

Apple should take that $15 billion in spending cash and use it for 1) quality conrol and 2) a Mac Pro update.........immediately.

Why do we need the 8800GT? It's not a gaming machine and the 1900XT is MORE than capable.

Why do we need the Penryn which is only just released? I'd rather have a proven chip in my workstation thanks and without the premium of showroom pricing.

Explain the need for a high speed FSB. With serious comments please.

2 GB standard...ok, sounds great. What?

Realistic pricing - check. Got that already.

This reeks of gamer-esque whining... I really hope it isnt.

"boot up to Front Row??

dumbest idea ever!!!

:apple:

does any one else agree?"

No. Ever heard of HP QuickPlay or Dell MediaDirect?

At these prices, we deserve a great video card. 3-D rendering could even become part of the OS in the next few years. Who knows? A machine at this level should be equipped to handle whatever can be thrown at it, now and in the not to distant future.

8 cores. Faster FSB. Lower power consumption. Cooler-running.

Explain the need for a high speed FSB. With serious comments please.

If I could choose a 4-core with better memory handling or an 8-core with the current bus system, I'd choose the 4. Getting things in and out of RAM is the biggest bottleneck at the moment, whereas support for multi-cores is still pretty poor, crippling the power available. Still, when using something that does support multiple cores, like video rendering, the current 8-core performance in rendering is hampered first and foremost by RAM access. Nehalem should be a big deal in addressing that when it comes to market late this year.

2 GB standard...ok, sounds great. What?

1GB is 250MB per core. Frankly, putting 512MB DIMMs in two slots is a waste of space. My wish is that these things ship with 4GB but that is unlikely to happen.

Realistic pricing - check. Got that already.

Had that in August 2006. Don't have it now.

I am not a gamer.

The first one certainly sounds more plausible than the 2nd. That said, it sounds like a hell of a lot of product releases - realistically we may have one or two new products and a quiet update of another line. I believe the MacBook Nano, or whatever it's called, will come out and fill in the gap in the 12" PB market. It really depends on the price of the thing (which, knowing Apple, will be higher than everyone expects - causing much criticism - even though it will go on to be the best selling Mac).

I feel the new notebook could be one of those revolutionary Apple products that gets people talking - and then copying. It won't just be something to immitate the subnotebooks that have been on the market for years - it will be completely new and fix all the flaws that Steve has been talking about with those - and somehow explain why Apple hasn't done one to date (recently). To some extent, that's why I think there might be some truth in the 2nd transcript in this regard - some sort of touch capability.

When the 12" PB was released, it was hailed as the smallest "fully functional" notebook - i.e. Apple regards a full size keyboard and optical drive as standard for a notebook and did not want to remove them. Obviously, things have moved on since then but the CD/DVD is not as dead as people think - comparisons with the floppy disk are a little unfair. We must neither forget about future lag - most normal people are still using CDs to play their music on an everyday basis and buying DVDs. Digital video distribution is in its infancy, and the Apple TV / iTunes movie service show that its harder to get people to budge from DVDs. Indeed, the strength of DVD is ultimately why I think both HD-DVD and BlueRay will fail for watching videos - the HD picture is not so much better that consumers will shell out on all their DVDs again. (The major reason why people moved from VHS to DVD for video was so that 1) they didn't have to rewind - i.e convenience, and 2) because people didn't buy movies so much back then anyway but now people have more money to blow on luxury goods such as entertainment. The increase in picture and sound quality was a bonus, but not the killer feature that got people buying).

Ultimately though, Apple needs to decide which market the new sub notebook will fall into. If it wants it to be the new 12" PB (which was often bought by semi-pro users who wanted more capability than the iBook but couldn't afford the 15/17" PBs), Apple needs to make sure that it is not too expensive. However, it also needs to tap into the market for professionals in need of an ultra-portable workstation. Pricing too low could canbilise MacBook sales and be a similar disaster for Apple.

Neither transcript mentions much (if any) about software. Normally there is a fair amount of demonstration. I'm not expecting iLife as it has already been released recently, but I would have thought Microsoft would be on hand to demonstrate the new Office 2008, plus perhaps one brand new consumer Apple software product. This would fill the gap and pad out the keynote to its usual length of 1.5 hours or so. Even Steve Jobbs would be hard pushed to make either of those transcripts last more than 30 mins!

Yeah, I think an aluminum mouse would look pretty cool, but as I discovered with my alu keyboard, it would probably get pretty cold to touch, especially in the room I keep my desk in. My home office is a basement office, so it never really gets warm, and some days the keyboard feels like ice. I'd have to get a little Michael Jackson glove if I had an alumimouse.

I need this stuff, and I am not a gamer. At least not a computer gamer; I have a Playstation for games. As a video editor and animator, I need all the speed and power I can get my hands on, and at the moment the Mac Pro is underpowered and outdated compared to similarly equipped PCs. This means that me and many other video/animation professionals who need an equipment upgrade are faced with the choice of either waiting until Apple decides to upgrade the Mac Pro, or switching the edit suites to a PC-based solution (which is more than adequate, whatever your biases may be). I know from reading these boards that some pros have already been forced to a PC solution. I haven't, yet. Still milking the G4 Dual800 for all it's worth. I'd like it if my rendering could be done while I go for a coffee break, not overnight; Anywhere we can crank up the juice makes my work day more efficient. But I couldn't possibly justify to my company a Mac Pro with the current config. They'll be making purchases in the next month or two, and the direction they go will depend a lot on whether we see a Mac Pro update.

So, call us whiners if you must, but don't call us gamers. We are professional whiners. :)

I just am so satsified with my new MBP 15inch that anything coming from Apple is only going to help me convince more people to consider MACs for their next PC purchase. I've already personally converted 5 people over and as Apple keeps doing better, staying out of the controversy lime light and releasing great products, I think my job will only get easier.

Just like everyone else, I'm super-double-extra excited for this years MacWorld. I certanly don't think Steve will top the hype and excitement of the iPhone confermation unless he releases a 12inch MAC Tablet with a MultiTouch iPhone like interface. I will ship with a wireless keyboard and mouse and have 100 gig of static memory.
LanPhantom

Why do you spell Mac all uppercase? It's not an acronym. Or maybe it means Mega-Awesome Computer, who knows?

Glad you enjoy it and are convincing people, though I've sort of reached the point now where I don't care what kind of computer other people have anymore. I just tell them they should get the computer that best suits their needs, though I try to leave them with the idea that a responsible person would properly research all their options.

I thought that after everyone saw the photo books I made for some people for xmas that it would spark some interest in Macs, but I just ended up with a bunch of requests for more photo books! I'll be arranging pictures of other people's babies till April. I don't mind though, they're all willing to pay extra for my time.

Keynote

Steve Jobs approaches the stage in blue jeans and a black turtleneck. The screens light up with the I phone and the I pod touch.
"Touch, tap and scroll and now we bring it to you in a 12" cinema screen."

The screens bring up the My-tablet. similar in design to the I Phone with a touch and tap screen. "The My-Tablet is about the size of a paperback but less than a half inch in thickness (what is that about 1.125mm?). The device has no keyboard. An onboard touch keyboard, similar to the iPhone keyboard, is available. However the device works with all Apple bluetooth keyboards and mouses.

On board the My-Tablet has a camera, microphone, stereo speakers, an iPod connection, a mini fire wire plug, and a mini-din plug for connection to stereo and video equipment. What you don't see is 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth.

The My-tablet has an adjustable lucite stand that it can be placed into, and automatically adjusts to portrait and landscape display when tilted in those directions. The My-Tablet comes with flash memory in configurations of 32 gig, 64 gig, and 128 gig.

The My-Tablet can be charged and synced using a powered USB connection again similar to an iPod.

A combination 250gig, HD DVD-RW or Blue Ray DVD-RW and stand for the My-Tablet is available. The stand also charges the My-Tablet.

The My-Tablet runs a full version of Leopard.

Battery life running videos is an impressive 6 continuous hours."

Applause

I wake up.

AMEN Brother. It'd be nice to get a Pro Apple system with no bugs or faulty construction. How about a MacBook Pro that doesn't creak when I pick it up?

You can't be serious can you? I mean... did you even think about the Professional users out there that aren't getting their money's worth? Or did you just think about the gamers and automatically assume that they are whining? Not trying to insult you, but it doesn't seem that you thought this comment through.

$400 is too much for a Blu-ray drive. LG makes a drive that supports both Blu-ray and HD-DVD for $299.

Then Apple's "Think Different" strategy could be to use LG's Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive as a BTO for $799.

Transcript 1 bothers me.

I am looking to get the rumored ultra compact notebook when it comes out, but 64gb of disk space is ridiculous. I suppose the "ultra compact" part means you have to sacrafice some things and that it was never meant to be a desktop replacement, but I estimate I would need at least 250gb to be functional.

You do realize that most likely both of these transcripts are completely fake, right?

It only reads.

I hope they are fake, and I understand that current notebook models don't have 250gb, but in my opinion it would be a mistake to regress in hard drive size.

Let me help you out there. The transcripts are fake because the writing is far inferior compared to anything considered professional, and the concept of an ultra portable is to be power efficient, hence using Solid State Drives instead of the usual Hard Disk Drives that you find in current notebooks. SSDs only give you up to 64GB in an affordable package. There are 128GB drives out there but you will pay almost $1200 for it.

The part about Elgato integrating with Front Row sounds very plausible.

Not really. Elgato doesn't make their own hardware. They OEM generic TV Tuner hardware. Ever notice the eyeTV Hybrid looks remarkably like the WinTV USB stick? Apple would just get the OEM hardware themselves.

None of this sounds plausible, except iTunes movie rentals, and perhaps the Mac Pro updates.

I have heard a rumor Steve Jobs will be wearing a back top, blue jeans and white trainers this year, can anyone confirm this??

Does anyone really know if there will be a significant outfit change at MWSF? I really need some new clothes, but I'm not sure if I can wait 13 days. Will this new outfit be in stores the same day or will we have to wait.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but the search seems to be broken.

 Couldn't resist.

Bottom Line

After reading all of the posts, consensus seems to be refreshed Mac Pro and a touch screen portable. I vote for a more robust Apple TV. As to the other things, probably a number of updates, but nothing really jumps out, so is the one more thing the touch screen portable?

I agree the $400 dollar Blu-Ray drive sounds like its too much. You can get a Playstation 3 with an 80 gig hard drive, a free game and Blu-ray (one of Sony's best) for $499 and $399 with a smaller hard drive.
