The way they used to. As an external camera that you plug in and sit on top of your monitor.

+1. I had to get an iSight off Ebay just for that use. The ones that are still boxed are freakin expensive! I just wish they'd still make one for us non-Cinema Display users.

I ordered the magic mouse the day it was released. Soon after, we bought a new iMac for the house that included the new mouse. It worked perfectly and I was really into the momentum scrolling; I was amped to get one for my compuelter too! On Friday I received my magic mouse for my mac pro and now have a totally opposite reaction. The mac pro's metal casing hinders the Bluetooth connection and makes the tracking bounce everywhere w/ unexpected results (had the same problem w/ wireless mighty mouse) no matter what surface was placed underneath. I plug back in my wired mighty mouse and it's perfect again. Also, I'm sort of bummed momentum scrolling is only supported w/ snow leopard -- I'm not upgrading my system until they fix the bugs and resolve the issues w/ cs3. After spending 30 min on the phone w/ apple customer service, they agreed to let me return it sans penalty...

Absolutely loving this mouse! Feels amazing in the hand and loving its features. It would be perfect if it were not for its inability to activate expose/spaces/dashboard.

I've had mine for about 24 hours now and really love it. The momentum scrolling is great and I really like that you can scroll anywhere on the surface. I have relatively small hands (I wear an extra small size in women's gloves) and it's the perfect size for me. I have the tracking set on the second-to-fastest (possibly going up to the fastest, but I don't notice THAT much difference), just because I'm used to super fast reactions from my trackpad.

Besides, it's gorgeous.

what are the issues with cs3? i'm using snow leopard with cs4 so it doesn't really affect me but im just curious

Now that I've used it for a little while, the magic mouse is wonderful. But I do have complaints about the packaging and out of the box setup.

First, it comes in a plastic box similar to what the ipods come in. This box is sealed with 3 stickers that you must spend about 10 minutes scraping off with your fingernails. Or if you're real precise with a knife or something.

Once you get into the box, the mouse itself is stuck to the stand inside the box by another long sticker. This sticker actually leaves glue marks on the mouse itself, requiring you to then clean the mouse. Very un-Apple-like, Apple.

Then I take the mouse over to the iMac. I turn it on via the on/off switch on the bottom of the mouse, and it sits there for 3 minutes and then shuts off, because the iMac does not see it at all. I end up having to hunt down the special mouse software update on Apple's support website to even get the mouse to work for the first time. Again, not a good experience out of the box, Apple.

Cs3 is not supported w/ snow leopard, do a quick search here and you'll see. It obviously doesn't affect everyone but some have reported minor bugs / crashes, mostly in Photoshop. I'll upgrade when cs5 is released...

1. For me, the outside stickers came off like butter. Why not use an exacto (or something similar) if it was difficult?

2. The long, adhesive strip did leave glue on the bottom of the mouse which was sort of lame; had to buff it off w/ a finger.

3. Almost positive you cannot pair a mouse by simply turning it on (unless mouse was sold w/ the new iMac) -- you have to connect via the Bluetooth option in the system prefs.

Anyone here have this problem when you mouse is already connected and working but then you wanna turn it off so you do and then you want to turn it on again but it wont pair back with the mac? it took me a long time to pair it again..

Had that problem too. Fixed by turning Bluetooth off, then back on. Afterwards, I could turn the Magic Mouse off and on and reconnect with a click. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/812173/

Works well but i've gone back to my wired mighty mouse, as the Magic mouse makes my hand feel slightly tingly and stings after a while.

I think its electrical as it feels fine if i take the batteries out.

Should pair right away.

Ok, now i might be overly sensitive but do you guys notice the right click button to be louder and more "loose" then the left click?

When you slightly press on the right side the shell will come down a bit before you can actually register a click.

I got mine from Apple White City in west London. It was the last one on the shelf.

I'm very pleased with it so far. I find the momentum scrolling very intuitive - not sure about the two-finger swipe to go back in web pages, but I might get used to that. Also, I have large hands (and my size XL cycling gloves are too small for me) but I don't have a problem with the Magic Mouse's size - seems fine to me.

I have used it for a couple days and love the new Magic mouse.

Anyone think it's odd that on multi-touch trackpads, it's a three finger swipe to go back or forward in safari, but on the Magic Mouse, it's a two finger swipe? It's hard for me to get used to.

Other than that, it's nice. I predict an expose gesture in the next three months.

Had mine delivered on Saturday by FedEx.

Very simply the best mouse I have ever owned.

After my software update, I was using this mouse without any trouble. I could not get the mouse to pinch me, and the edges seem fine for my use.

The swipe actions do remind me of using my iPhone, and like some have already mentioned, there might be a market for an Apple Bluetooth Trackpad for the iMac.
That way one can eliminate the need to drag the mouse across the table too.

I also see the need to be able to customize the mouse actions further though an update to the preferences panel, but that should not be a big deal.

Have said that, I cannot go back to my mighty mouse, which I perviously enjoyed. Another success by Apple as far as I am concerned.

Great Design - but not perfect yet

The Magic Mouse is certainly a thing of beauty, and the multi-touch features are certainly ground-breaking.

The Good :D :
  • It's looks - stunning
  • Tracks Smoothly
  • Pairs easily
  • Multi-touch is great

The Not-so-Good :( :
  • Not very Ergonomic - My hand hurts a lot in several different places after useing it for an hour or two - might have to go back to my Logitech.
  • No Middle Click - I use this function all the time browsing
  • Tracks far too slow. Installed third-party Mouse Zoom, which helps a lot, and am waiting for USB Overdrive to be updated (Can still fix this Apple - as it's just a software issue)
  • Could have done with being USB rechargeable rather than AA's

I just received my 24" iMac refurb on Friday and got the "magic" mouse as well. I absolutely love the momentum scrolling. I'm still on the fence as to whether I'll go back to using my MS BT 5000 Note Book mouse or not.

- I would like faster tracking (or maybe adjustable acceleration would do the trick). Even with the setting maxed, I have to do more dragging than I'd like to get from one side of my display to the other and even more to get to my external display.

- Apparently the mouse hasn't "broken in" yet, since it still isn't sliding smoothly.

- There is SO MUCH unrealized multi-touch potential on this mouse. Why no 2-finger+click for a third mouse button? Why no track-pad mode? Why not make single-finger movements do precision movements of the pointer (and make scrolling require 2-fingers)?

- The mouse is a bit heavy for my tastes, or at least the weight distribution doesn't feel quite right. I use rechargeable batteries, so I'd rather save some weight and have it use a single battery.

- It would be nice if Apple integrated the battery and provided a charging dock (or pad ala Powermat and add support to the wireless keyboard as well). At least with all their "We are SOOOOOO green" talk, they could at least include Eneloop batteries instead of traditional alkaline throw-aways.

It's definitely a step-up from the "mighty" mouse, but at least its most glaring issues (hopefully) can be fixed in software.

I'm trying to hang in there with my Magic Mouse, but so far I'm of the opinion that this is a poorly thought out piece of kit that will satisfy only a minority of users. If you thought the Mighty Mouse polarised opinion then you aint seen nothing yet.

No control over Dashboard and Exposé from the mouse is a total oversight, IMHO. It's also just a bit too slim, I don't like the feeling of the gap between shell and base pinching my fingers when I click.

Save for a miracle I think I'll be back to the wired Mighty Mouse within about a week - that's about how long it should take for me to reach the end of my fuse and throw the Magic Mouse out onto the car park.

The only problem I have had was on maps.yahoo.com
Just barely moving your finger on the top of the mouse (resting your finger on the mouse so you are ready to click, but then slightly moving your finger) causes the map to start zooming and messed me up a few times where it would zoom all the way out.

Why doesn't this thing have a middle button? Two finger clicking does nothing right now and that's what it should do.

I would love it if they made the middle button just a little white led in the middle underneath the white surface.

great review! - nice to hear some positive feedback and an overall good experience :)
