It's ok, but....

$130

And it would not fit on most desks with a slide out keyboard drawer/tray.:(

oh, and really. putting velcro on our expensive apple products. Plus velcro does wear out after a while, and the velcro tape would eventually peel off leaving you with a sticky mess - then you will be heading to the nearest craft shop to buy more velcro tape.

I think the Twelve south version is better, but I would have a problem. I am left handed. I would have to take it apart to replace the batteries - thus I would be afraid of breaking the plastic tab.

I always figured with the plywood I have in my shed, I will make me a component. First thing I may make would be a cool pad that uses desktop case fans, so they don't break / stop working within the first few months. PLus then I could have one with the fans positions where you need it the most. I have 2 warm spots on my macbook that my cool pad does not hit.

Yeah, that looks pretty ugly. Much rather have the Apple Keyboard+Magic trackpad connected combo :D

$290,000 actually - sounds pedantic, but $10,000 is quite a big difference.

What about materials? Alumin(i)um isn't cheap. And what about markup prices for selling to chain stores? Markups can be more than 50% sometimes. And sales, marketing, salaries of staff... All need to be included.

Your profit of $250,000 is a huge overestimate. Even if they eventually made a decent return of $100k per month, that kind of profit for a small company sounds about right.

I have seen that happen when you have the right direct channels. It is a short spike but enough for you to quit the day job and work on higher volumes.

Yes, retailers and other warehouse distributors will take their share once the first build is launched. Many niche products like this start off direct and then hit the higher volume channels once you cash in on the early adopters.

Am I the only one who thinks $29 sounds an okay price?

I think it sounds fine.

You have to keep in mind there are a lot of do-nothing Obama supporter types that think society owes them a living. Deep down inside, most liberals don't believe in their own ability to produce so they try to survive off others ability.

Public unions leaderships are a perfect example of this. If they just found who is holding them back instead of attacking those that are productive, they too would like this price.

yesv - delivery to the UK costs more than the product itself
i really want this!!

i have a wireless keyboard + trackpad as i find using the macbook's own keyboard really digs into wrists.....

i also have justmobil xstand so this wand thing would really look nice and allow me to sit on my couch whilst pretending to work:D

i really need to take a trip to the states,.. as im planning to invest on an ssd drive soon and have my heart set on OWC mercury extreme 240GB.. just waiting for prices to drop (sorry goin off on 1 aint I.. well im a mac newbie what u expect)

Well, it does what it says -- it holds the keyboard and trackpad together as though they were one solid piece.

But the H-bar (which goes between the keyboard and trackpad) is a REALLY tight fit. And I've noticed a couple of times now that vigorous typing on the side of the keyboard where the trackpad is docked can inadvertently cause trackpad clicks due to the two things being wedded together. I'm going to have to adjust my typing technique slightly, and pay more attention to the screen when I am typing, if I keep this thing.

So I'll give the Magic Wand a B- (EDIT: C-). What I really want is for Apple to come up with an integrated keyboard/trackpad (with the trackpad on the left side, or interchangeable sides, please).

EDIT: The inadvertent clicking issue when I hit the SHIFT key on the left side (where the trackpad is docked) is just too aggravating to deal with. I'm returning my Magic Wand. It's a good concept, but the trackpad's physical click can't be turned off as far as I can tell and this is a near-fatal flaw. I can't be expected to check my typing constantly for mouse clicks when I'm never actually touching the trackpad or mouse.

You must have a faulty unit. Mine simply does not do that, and I tried SLAMMING keys on the side of the keyboard next to the trackpad. No issue whatsoever, and that bar is not tight. It's snug, but slid on and off easily.

sensational idea!

love it... i can sit on my couch and use it as a remote

it also stabilizes the wireless keyboard and track pad and really speeds up my productivity

check out my set-up

<excuse the mess>

Just got mine in the mail -- but I'm at work and I have to wait until I can go home to try it.

Just thought I'd post a follow up. I managed to find a UK supplier of MagicWands - www.solutions-inc.co.uk and have been using my MagicWand for a couple of months now with my Mac Mini connected to the TV in my lounge and it absolutely rocks. It's exactly what I wanted and although the price initially seemed high, it's worth every penny in my opinion.

I don't know anyone who has actually used or owns a magic trackpad. As a matter of fact I actually forget they exist from time to time. Are these things actually popular now?

Just bought one myself, and I love it. My Mighty Mouse just went bye-byes! As to "popular"? Dunno, but I'm a convert!

I have several Magic Trackpads and really like them. Since I also use trackpad equipped notebooks and am used to the "gestures", I find the trackpad more comfortable than always cupping my hand around a mouse. I do, however, find the mouse better when playing solitaire. :D

Since I started to have some hand/wrist pain with using a mouse, I have been very careful in the selection of which mouse to purchase to minimize the pain. I feel no pains at all with the trackpad, even after extensive use.

Pairing up the Magic Trackpad with the wireless keyboard held together with the MagicWand works perfectly from the couch with my Mac Mini based home theater computer.

Just to bump this up for the UK people out there - now available on Play.com for £17.50 :)

Just ordered one of these. Glad to see reports of people using it successfully with a HTPC Mac Mini as that's exactly what I plan to do with it myself.

Ordered from Play as above as well, Amazon were offering it for £17.99 but it's jumped up to £22-odd now.

Just got my magic wand today. I really like it. Works well, and feels solid. Maybe apple will get on board and start building an integrated keyboard/trackpad, but until then I think the magic wand is great.

Is it aluminum or plastic?

This isn't something I'm really too interested in. It seems like it'd be nice, but in reality I think it would be odd having the trackpad right next to the keyboard. Sure, right now my trackpad is only about an inch away from my keyboard, but I feel as though eliminating that inch would feel awkward, at least for a little while.

I'm content with having them separate.

Is it aluminum or plastic?

Plastic (polycarbonate). You would not want it to be aluminum, as it would scratch your keyboard and trackpad. It does have a very "aluminum type" look to it.

I think it works spectacular... especially now with Lion. Prior to Lion I used the wired keyboard and magic mouse. Now I use the "magic wand" combo... and the magic mouse.
