Agreed! People really need to stop calling these wireless chargers. They have plenty of wires and giant cord. Call it what it is: inductive charging.
1) Inductive charging is wireless.

2) If I charge my phone every day without having to plug it in or handle any cables or wires, is it not charging wirelessly?

3) If physics are overcome and we eventually get longer distance wireless charging, the power transmitter will still have to be plugged in. So no different than the current Qi chargers.

First of all, to anyone saying that this is wireless charging, it’s not. Apple is not calling it that, and you know it. You’re just trying to be obnoxious. also, obviously it’s not like the original MagSafe. Apple has re-purposed names before, (iBook the laptop vs iBooks the Ebooks store anyone?)
And, Apple will be removing the port. I don’t know if it will be in 2021, that’s what all the leaks say, but to me that does seem slightly too soon.
However, next year‘s iPhones do seem kind of boring. I mean, it’s going to be extremely hard to build much hype when the only real things that are going to be changing are a 120 Hz screen and an A15 chip, so doing something bold like removing the charging port might be smart to create some type of story. I mean, they basically did that with the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 was a relatively small upgrade, but it got tons and tons of media attention, mainly for the removal of the headphone jack. I remember seeing actual late night news reports about the removal of the headphone jack.
So, imagine the absolute fury when people realize that the charger port is removed. All publicity is good publicity, and this would create tons of it.
As I said, realistically it seems too soon, but Apple has done a lot of things I thought seemed way too soon at the time. I mean, the 2015 MacBook only having one USB seaport seemed way too early, but they did it anyway. and a lot of rumors are pointing that way.

Oh it’s wireless charging all right. Maybe it would help to imagine the puck built into a nightstand or desk?

Damn this is exactly what i want in my bed. I have a wireless charger for when lazy. I have a cord for charging plus using phone.
This combines those two in 1.
F yeah

either you guys are thick or i am. think about the airpods model of “portable” charging with the case.

say apple’s new magsafe charging system works like this: the magnetic battery pack ring is as thin as the lightning port, because it has one. the ring can be attached to a standard lightning charger (or maybe even a new, faster quick charger) — or it can be charged up itself and detached from the lightning cable.

on the wired end, you get a quicker charge and slightly less friction. plugging in a lightning cable is barely fiddly, but a magnetic ring might be even less so?

but then if you want to go wireless, you disconnect the ring from the lightning cable and it continues charging the phone. now you are truly wireless. it is thin enough to be unobtrusive.

perhaps the ring has a U1 beacon of sorts and can be very easily and precisely located, to avoid the fear or annoyance of losing it. it’s one more thing to carry, but it’s so small it’s no worse than carrying a cable or charger. how will replacement rings be priced?

i could be way off, but that all feels very apple to me.

I see wireless magnetic charging being the future, but a giant wired magnetic cable? No.

I already get frustrated with my watch magnetic cable. It never sits right.

It’s a shame AirPower got cancelled, even an AirPower style magnetic charging base just for iPhone would be better than this.

Well nothing we have right now is really wireless charging. Eventually we might have wireless power transmission and that would be true wireless.

still got cables back to the power station! /s

This is the same wireless as we’ve had for years, do we really need semantic nit pickers in threads like this every time? Its just a regular wireless charger with a little magnetic ring to help locate it. A nice quality of life/convenience to avoid you waking up in the morning to find your phone hasn’t charged. Looking forward to it, providing the ‘lock’ isn’t too strong so I can get it off the bedside table without pulling the charger with it every time which would then undo the convenience its providing

This still feels less like wireless charging than having a pad on your nightstand that you just lay your phone on. Especially if it looks like that giant thing that sticks to my phone.

I'm sure someone will offer a bigger pad. the iphone will just automatically align to it.
With a bigger pad it should also be easy to take the phone of the charger with one hand

As stupid this seems, at least MagSafe adds to the safe positioning of the copper core if you use a stationary mat which Apple will probably do.

I have a great idea: you connect a cable to the phone via a small hole in the phone and that cable is connected to the wall which delivers electricity over the cable at rates much faster than this supposed wireless charging. It’s an incredible invention let me tell you. I call it a “plug”.

Totally, all this chargers are just another thing over the desk, I have the cable hanging from a side of my table and I can't even see it.

I´m getting old I guess...

WRONG! (As you put it to others).

The article is now old and there are many newer, more reliable and cheaper solutions to the problem.

search for Carlinkit. I retrofitted wireless CarPlay to my wife’s car just last month and it’s flawless.
Not compatible with every car. Didn’t work for mine, even though it’s has wired CarPlay built in.

I hope the new magnetic charger also compatible with Apple Watch. I am tired of the whole different charger with devices that’s supposed to be in one big ecosystem

11” iPad Pro, iPhone, and Apple Watch all need 3 different chargers! That’s dumb really.

Side note, assuming no one has mentioned it yet - the cutout for the flash on that supposed case is too deep. It’d cause shadows from the flash bouncing off it.

giant watch charger

side note:
imagine battery versions where you can detach the cable and keep a thin hockeypuck battery attached behind the phone. i think that's how apple is going to go portless.

You mean like the battery case that's been available for years!!!!!😂
