- It is proprietary to Apple chargers, if so why?
- Is it to do with PD standards?
- Does the charger have to be exactly 9V-2.2a compliant?

Everything else on this thread is unfortunately conjecture and guesswork.
We need the actual facts.
Actually, we need Apple to publish full specs...

It is almost never I have the need for the quickest charge. I have a few cheap Qi Charger around the house, next to my bed and on the desk. I rest my phone there when I am not using the phone (or airpods).

Magsafe is nice as I don't have to align it perfectly. I am sure that many people care about really fast charging, however, many of us are happy to have a generally charged phone.

The demo was very impressive.

I'm a little disappointed in Apple here. You'd think they would make the best wireless charger they possibly can, for ALL their devices, not just the iPhone 12 with horribly gimped slow charging for previous models.

The damn thing doesn't even charge Apple Watches.

When a cheap $9.99 Qi charger bought as an impulse buy at Walgreens charges my iPhone 11 PM faster than Apple's own wireless charger, you know they don't care as much as they used to.
Technology moves on...you should too.

Its laughable that anyone actually thought it was about saving the planet and not about profits.

Sorry I actually do find it laughable - not at Apple but at the idea that this is about profits.

Nokia was and has been notorious for selling accessories for phones - in fact they probably MADE it a profitable venture for any manufacture before anyone else figured it out. Sometimes using the same batteries for phones to be swapped out (smartphones included) yet many many times even if 2 or more of their phones shared the same battery the charging plug (and interface to the phone) differed thus creating a huge need to buy ... you guessed it chargers.

THE worlds BEST SELLING phones annually are:

Nokia 1100 and Nokia 1110 (candy bar basic phones) released 2003 and 2005; each selling 250 Million phones ! They included a charger. Imagine how many chargers they still sold in that time! And they, Nokia made MORE phone models than ANY manufacturer in complete phone history!

Apple's iPhone 6 and 6 plus sold 222.4 million (together) not separately!

Have a look at the facts - of just phones sold in total quantity globally:

Of those phones, the top 15 best selling phones in history ... Nokia sold the top 12!
Total devices of those top 15 sold by Nokia ... 2.051 Billion phones since 2010! This is just going back 10yrs ... and Nokia accomplished this in just 5yrs!

Now ... figure out the math of just 10% of those users buying a secondary charger (1 for work/travel & 1 for home) at say $10/charger - I recall chargers from Nokia back in 2010 being worth a LOT more in USA/CAN dollars. Now you'd be talking about profits!

So until Apple reaches close to those numbers ... then you're talking hyperbole.

BTW the next best selling iPhone was #16 on that list and combined sales of iPhone 8 and 8Plus at 86.3 million devices. Since the iPhone 5 many iPhone users already had several Lightning cables with USB-A charging blocks. I'm sure many still have quite capable USB-A blocks or USB-C charging blocks to use cables with, not such a high percentage would NEED to buy a charging block or MagSafe charging connection.

In all seriousness, this flies in the face of Apple’s statements about environmental issues. I wonder if this is a case of one hand not talking to the other - one group removes the charger because “everyone has a charger” while another group makes a charging attachment that (almost) doesn’t work as advertised because (almost) no one has the right charger.

  • Apple could make the packaging smaller so they could ship more. (Saving Apple money)
  • It might save the environment in the long run but I think a USB-A cable would have been better as people have a lot more USB-A bricks than C.
(Saves Apple money and is a cash grab for the 20 watt brick and MagSafe)
  • MagSafe, overprice money grab.
    (Overpriced money grab)
  • $39 MagSafe cable still requires a $20 power adapter.
    (Overpriced money grab)

And you probably thought I was going to counter your points.

Have a look at my post in this thread just before this one I'm typing in rebuttal.

Smaller packaging to include a charger - reasonable. Yet it doesn't save Apple as much money.
Packaging would still be larger and in a large shipping crate, on a plane, boat truck every inc or half-inch counts as totally means the smaller the space used per device in a box, more units ship. Also you need to think of weight in terms of freight when it comes to cost. Not everyone is thinking about this. Apple surely does.

The long run is what Apple is pushing and thinking about. Recall the backlash of them not going to usb-c on the iPhone? well the lightning port was their long run game. It's worked out well for them. Making USB-A charging blocks in combination of USB-C probably ads more cost (not too much) but significant enough over the next few years that Apple seems to have killed off new chargers using USB-a ports altogether. There goes another reasoning ;) It's worked for the competition very well so why not Apple?

MagSafe ... yeah it's new it's seen as a money grab.
But wait ... how many wireless chargers based on Qi standard does Apple actually make themselves vs Samsung, Huwwaei, Sony, Oppo, etc? I can't recall but I doubt it's more than 2 they make themselves - so why is it NOT a cash grab for other manufacturers whom already do and do NOT include it on their phones shipped? Apple is following suit here by your thinking.

Yes MagSafe seems like a cash grab because it is different yet some have tested it on other devices and it seems to work - so it's an alternative. Honestly I think Apple is going to take this one step further ... like accessories powered though the device itself ... very similar to that phone company by that Google guy who ended up getting cancelled out of business with lawsuits of sexual misconduct while being at Google long before he started his phone business. Well that phone company had a 360 camera that was USB bus powered through 2 small connections on the back of that phone. I see Apple doing the same in a year.

Apple put special controller so only their charger can put 15W, mind boggling, the more powerful 60W/100W MacBook chargers aren't allowed !!

So we know reason for actual charging removal, right? Curious what apologist will wholeheartedly says defended Apple.
Don't suppose it's possible, there may be some nuances that Apple wanted to ensure was taken of care of when charging at 15w and the charger and puck work together to make sure the battery doesn't incur any damage. But let's criticize Apple blindly without some discussion first.

Really showing that you care about the environment here Apple forcing people to buy what should have already been in the packaging... smdh. I thought that with all of the rumors of them removing the adapter that they would be smart to include a voucher, but they didn’t. “Our research shows that everyone has what they need” then all of the accessories are not compatible with what everyone already has. Clearly NOT ONLY for the environment. They should have waited another cycle or two before doing this or included the vouchers. I hate that I’m saying this, but maybe we need to look at going the France route and forcing a FULL charging setup with all new devices either included or with a voucher...

Edit: I realize that France forces hands free for a specific reason but the idea is pretty much the same.

I don't know about it being a rip-off, but someone in Apple dropped the ball, for sure. It should be labeled as iPhone 12-specific (incompatible with other devices) and should be sold *only* with the matching 20w charger, period. Apple's gonna pay (in legal action) for this one. Just my take on it.

Unacceptable. No mention of that in any literature or on the box. This is totally misleading and I smell a legal issue.
Really think Apple is so clueless as to not cover it's bases at the most basic of levels with verbiage on the products?

All this muss and fuss about how fast (or slow) the MagSafe charger can do its job. Meanwhile I'm still using my $12 cheapo stand up wireless desktop charger that I bought from Amazon when I bought my iPhone X. I'm sure it charges at butt slow speeds but I don't care. What I do know is that I've put my iPhone X, 11 Pro and now my 12 Pro on the charger when I go to sleep. I wake up at 4:00am and the phones are fully charged.

Did I forget to mention my charger only cost me $12? lol

The reason the charger and pods were removed, in part, was environmental. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy anything and for the most part, I believe, most iphone 12 users can charge their phones without additional expense.

I thought that with all of the rumors of them removing the adapter that they would be smart to include a voucher, but they didn’t. “Our research shows that everyone has what they need” then all of the accessories are not compatible with what everyone already has.
A voucher would create a secondary market, which would negate part of what Apple is trying to do.

Clearly NOT ONLY for the environment. They should have waited another cycle or two before doing this or included the vouchers.
I agree, not only for the environment, but to avoid a price hike from the lowest to highest in the range.

Not going to happen in the US, imo.

What kind of ‘signalling‘ do these power adaptors have to have these power variations? How curious.

So many people in other threads were up in arms about the environment ... I don't comment a lot, I just lurk ... but I did in excess (by my own standard) saying that this wasn't about environment. What a waste of time, all I had to do was wait for this thread

This is disappointing, and the answer is quite simple. Vote with your wallet. Even better, place orders on the apple store for the items you most dislike and cancel them right away.

I genuinely was interested in the MagSafe charger but the idea that you NEED the 20w apple charger or you can't get even remotely close to 15w is insane. What about my 130w Hypershop charger? No? Still wouldn't work? WHY!???

So in protest I cancelled all of my orders with them except the 12 Pro. I still love iPhone and will be able to retain much of the value when I sell this for my iPhone 13/12s Pro.

It more seems like shooting from the hip due to the newness of the products. One group removed the charge "because everybody has a charger", the other group ensures your battery is protected by ensuring double the wattage is safe due to Apple products interacting with one another. The flip-side is using non-approved chargers were not documented anywhere or not uncovered as working in a reduced capacity.
