What Apple should do is to divide the battery in iPhones into two units, with each being able to charge separately. This is what many Android OEMs are doing. That way, you are essentially "double" your current charging speed as you are not charging one huge battery, but charging two smaller batteries at the same time.

Come on Apple, even Xiaomi figured this out.

Meanwhile, Huawei is doing 50W wireless charging... :D
Come on man, please tell me why that matters? Charging at 15W is still charging at 15 W when spread over 1 or 10 batteries

Last I checked wireless was slower than wired.in all phones Did I miss something?

Umm, no surprise there.... 20W wired vs 15W MagSafe vs 7.5W Qi. What would one expect?

I figured if a Qi charger took 90 min, than MagSafe would be 45 min at double the wattage, but still not as fast as USB-C wired.

So the long and short of this is that a gimmicky feature is a gimmick? 2020 phones are pretty "meh" across the board.

In the end I cancelled my orders and will be returning my MagSafe wallet (didnt like how easily it slid off the phone in the MKBHD vid), MagSafe charger (cable is too damned short or I’d love it, will rebuy when 2m is released), and my clear case. Decided to go caseless, I can’t stand covering up a $1099 device. I’ll just get AppleCare.

Why not try it for yourself before returning it?

I’m surprised Apple talked this up so much as something almost revolutionary and that THEY had finally found a way to do it properly. For the price of that charger, I might just be sending it back to apple, I thought it would be a somewhat fast charge.
That’s why you don’t assume

Huawei make me wanna switch to Android.

Zero surprise, basically a non-issue. If people want fast charge times, plug in the cable - it's likely to be quicker than most forms of wireless charging.

However, I do worry slightly that if Apple do decide to remove the Lightning port soon, that option wouldn't exist... which would be a pain.
When they do that, my actual iPhone will be my last iPhone.

Anyone know if an enhanced MagSafe, possibly a few more turns in the coils, could ramp up charging performance? That is, would it be a reasonable and sensible approach?

And whether such an improvement would speed up charging of iPhones 12 or would only work for next-gen 2021 phones?

Extra weight and possibly less space for battery to make something as efficient as the existing solution? That would be utter nonsense.

Because induction charging is incredibly inefficient too, so you send 15w to get about 8-9w charging, where as with the direct charge you're using 20w to get about 19w charging.

Yes. the verge mentioned this in their podcast, but feel like there needs to be more journalistic critique of promoting environmental friendliness of their packaging decisions while at the same time promoting a charging solution that’s substantially less efficient. Hammering on this needs to come before they go portless, not after.

Since apple is heavily promoting this magsafe thing, it is no surprise we all just take it and accept it like good children :/

ive said its just a gimmick and pointless
I totally agree. I have a couple of fast chargers with lightning cords and they work perfect for me. I really don’t get the whole purpose/reasoning for the MagSafe charger. Definitely a gimmick. And would be okay if it actually performed better than the corded charging. Spend more money for a product that doesn’t work as good.

I’ll pass on both the MagSafe charger and the wallet.

wireless charging is BAD for the environment ! It is inefficient and lots of Wh are lost.

If we want to take care of our planet - the first thing to go should be any form of wireless charging until efficiency is close to 95+%

But I guess fruitcakes and snowflakes don't care about the environment...

The consensus seems to have shifted from a gasp of pleasant surprise when this was announced last week - it was so,etching they were able to keep secret - to a a shrug of indifference in practical use.

Essentially, it’s just a faster way to align your wireless charger.. if you shell out the money.

Maybe we will see some clever third party use. As of now, I’m in no rush to spend an extra $40.

So my $20 Anker charger is as good or better. Wow, and it's been sitting on my desk for 2-3 years now. Huh, weird.

Ehh, I wouldn’t go into gimmick mode just yet. I think there was just a lot of misplaced hype, then let down. One YouTube review said he was gonna buy the wallet instead of the case because it will provide back protection 😂. Folks wanted it to work as a car mount, lots of other claims that were assumed.

I think if the use case is keeping it on your nightstand and you hate fishing for the charge spot at night, probably will help. But that single use certainly isn’t as sexy as all the other hopes and dreams for MagSafe.
