There are so many alternatives, I got a wireless charging mat for $13.99 after a $6 discount on Amazon. The watch charger sits upright so nightstand mode works. The qi mat has some guiding rubber strips to make aligning the phone or AirPods easier. This product is a fail and especially at that price.
“Fail” means it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to. That’s how that very dated bit of internet vocab works. On the contrary, this seems like a travel product that does what it’s supposed to really well. I’m sure that tens of millions of holiday shoppers will be thinking “fail” when buy these, wrap them, and put them under the tree for someone they care about.

After seeing everything so far in regards to MagSafe I don’t think I am going to buy into the idea at the moment (too many kinks to iron out), obviously this will become the standard over the next couple of years but I think I willl wait until that time comes and the MagSafe is included in the box with the iPhone which is likely what will come on the 2021 or 2022 iPhones.

I really like how this video doesnt show them lifting the iPhone off the MagSafe the watch attached, obviously a very awkward task.

Magsafe is very un-apple and a very half hearted attempt, I would have much preferred apple to release a stand similar to what Belkin are due to release.

I would not trust a $13.99 Qi chargers from Amazon to not burn my house down. This thing does seem expensive, but anything under $20 seems to cheap to me.

This price is nonsense. I mean, I get it, it is a prestige product. But they are overcharging also on their own inability of making the Apple Watch charge on their own Magsafe.

No wonder that the AirPower failed spectacularly if 3 years later they still can’t make the Apple Watch charge on anything else but its own concave charger. The kind of incompetence that pays off incredibly well for Apple, though.

I have a Belkin AppleWatch charger that charges just fine. What are you trying to say here?

I’m a but more interested in the Belkin 3 in 1 but I honestly am not sure I need to charge an AirPods case overnight. I think a regular MagSafe puck will do for the phone. My watch I tend to charge after I get up while I get ready and wear to bed with the sleep tracking.

Uses lightning instead of USB C? Forget it - hard pass.
I did think that at first, but then realised it means it's more convenient. Only need to carry 1 cable with you. Use the duo for overnight charging and if you need PD fast charging you can just take the cable out of the duo and plug your phone in for that quick 30 minute boost.

As someone who can travel for hours, work on site for hours more and then just get 30 minutes in a hotel before heading out again for food/drinks with a customer, that versatility is actually decent. I hate having to cart stuff around I dont use. Though Apple putting USB-C on the damned phone itself would be nicer!

Do you really believe that? Do you not trust Apple EarPods priced at 20$ to make you deaf by that logic? Or Apple lighting wire priced at the same price to burn your house down? These wireless chargers are very basic tech that’s been around for far longer than Apple has used it. This is just Apple trying to squeeze its customers.

Was excited for this when it was announced as it seemed like it would be a great travel accessory. Then they announced the priced ($169 in Canada!) and I was like... no thanks, I'll continue to carry an AW charger (I do have an extra one for travel) a lightning cable and a two port charge block when I travel!

How worthless is this going to be when Apple finally updated the Apple Watch to Qi charging...
I think Qi charging standard requires a specific size for the coils. That’s why no smart watches support Qi charging(based on a quick google search). And even if they did, apple would ensure backwards compatibility like they did with the MagSafe

I think you’re right.

My first thought was “surely the ‘contact patch’ of the regular AirPods wireless charging case isn’t much bigger than the large Apple Watch.” But now I wonder if it comes down to just the small Apple Watch being below the coil size threshold. Apple would’ve looked at that years ago and not wanted to do two different charging protocols for two sizes of the same watch...

if you lift your phone up the charger will lift up as well
Double sided tape works excellent 😉

Personally I'm totally okay with the price. It seems nicely designed, it's minimalistic, I expect the build quality to be as satisfying as I am used to with most Apple products and I find it practical and convenient -- especially for taking it on the road with me.

Tons of 3rd party products are similarly priced but no as unique. But if people think it's too expensive that's totally okay, too and you know that nobody is forcing you to buy it, right?! I just don't get all the hate about the product or the pricing, respectively.

This cork drink coaster has been my Apple Watch charging ”solution” since 2015 and I still haven’t found anything more appealing —and I’m willing to spend the $$

Do any of you have the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock from Apple? The material is not vinyl-like but very soft, and the whole thing has good weight to it. At $79 it’s not cheap either but the build quality is fantastic and for some (including me) the design language is beautiful. For something that I’ll display on a $4,000 piece of furniture, I’m a bit picky about the look.

Add to that $39 for an iPhone MagSafe charger, and $129 seems about right. I had expected it to cost $149 but also assumed it would come with an adapter, so I was pretty much right on. I’ll be buying one as soon as they become available.

I own the current MagSafe charger and have fallen in love with it. It is much more convenient than plugging a cord into the iPhone.

As traveling these days is limited I will wait for a while. For my home use I prefer a stand for my phone, easier to see notifications even from distance and in nighttime.

This would come in very handy when traveling. Like I plug my CPAP and phone into the outlet on the side of the bed I sleep on. I then have to find another outlet for my watch. Of course, I could just buy one of those things that turns one outlet into three. Which would probably cost like 5 bucks. I don't travel enough to justify $130 either way.
