Apparently, my brain decided to take a vacation the past couple of weeks. I was busy trying to see how I’d mount this, but not until yesterday did I realize I’d still need to plug my phone into the USB port for CarPlay. Duh. I feel so dumb.

I think somehow my brain was assuming the data would flow along with the power (wouldn’t that be cool?). I feel really dumb today. Maybe a real vacation is in order!
Get a brodit holder with lightening port in the bottom, every time you put the phone in it connects to CarPlay, don't have to plug a cable in, charges too. Better than vent holders, been using them for years

The MagSafe puck doesn’t stick particularly firmly to my 12 Pro. It’s enough to align the disc, but not nearly enough for a secure car mounting solution without an external clamp.

Brodit? Never heard of it, but I’ll take a look.

Just looked it up. It’s basically ProClip. Why the cigarette plug? Weird. Just need USB.

they have usb cable you take the cigarette plug out.

That’s interesting to hear.
I can’t promise anything here, but it may be worth exchanging your MagSafe charger at Apple. Maybe there is a flaw with yours. For me, my MagSafe holds my device firmly (I should mention, I have an Apple silicone case; caseless may be different) even on rough roads. Even if I shake or knock the mount, I have zero issues. The only way I can dislodge is by applying force at the top or bottom, and pushing or pulling it.

I’ve been looking at that and wondering how easy it is to put the phone on and take the phone off the mount given how much force it requires to insert/remove a lightning cable. Is it a quick/stable one-handed operation?

I have the holder without the cable, waiting for the new 12 version to get the one in the link, they are very stable so don’t think would be a problem.

Sorry to hear. My tracking still shows pre-shipment. We'll see if it goes out today as they mentioned - if the status is updated, that is, as I've had other USPS packages not update from that status even after I received
Well, Wednesday came and went without any updates in status and now ESR say it will ship “once it’s in stock”. Not a good sign...

I found a solution using a ram mount 1inch magnet to my ram mount arm and then the MagSafe magnetizes to that. Works great ARKON Arkon 65mm Diameter Round Heavy-Duty Magnetic Base with 25mm (1 inch) Ball Black Retail (SP1420MAG25) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088DB1KLL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_GsnPFbXVQQ0XZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Stays put. The MagSafe is secured to my scosche mount. It take quite a bit if force to remove it. I guess I should have shown that in the video.
So the MagSafe Puck has a scosche thing attached to the back of it? That’s permanent right? I have never used a scosche mount before. I’ve been using ProClip for years.

yes. I have a small metal plate attached via the 3M adhesive on the plate. You can remove it if you decided to no longer use this with the mount. No residue remains.

So I have been reading this entire thread and I can't seem to find a solution and it is highly frustrating...
so there are two main issues here:
1. people who want to use the magsafe puck to charge their phone in the car - this is perfectly understandable and there are numerous solutions for this - and I can't for the life of me see why this needs discussing - its simple and available (and really not the point of this thread).
2. people (myself included) that want to use CARPLAY and since vast majority (if not all) of the cars that are on the roads now have ONLY wired carplay the whole magsafe puck approach is a debacle - i don't want to have two sets of wires I need only one - the CARPLAY lightning2USB wire connection charges and connects and all I need is simple mount - and aside from belkin vent mount there is NOTHING...

i generally abhor vent mounts because they not only make one vent blocked and inoperable but they also very flimsy and always break...
Currently I am using a "clutchit" mount and I hide a metal plate on the bottom of my case on the inside making sure it is flush by cutting out some of the soft inner felt on the case...

but now my entire setup is ruined and I can't figure out how to mount the damn iphone without going insane... so if anyone has any reasonable clues as to how to achieve it or directions to some accessories that can simply mount the iphone 12 magnetically in the car (without additional cables and charging) - Please Please Please share your wisdom!

I'm going to end up just getting the Pitaka MagEZ case and one of their magnetic car mounts, but will be using a different adapter since none of theirs will work where I want it to. I don't care about wireless charging in my vehicle since I have to plug in for CarPlay anyway.

yeah... i really would like to have a case that is transparent (otherwise i will never see the new iPhone design)

For the past few years I've used MagBak cases. It's supposed to be compatible with the MagSafe and are coming out with a little adapter for use in cars. They are really thin, considering the case has magnets. Never had one fall in a car!

Cases: https://magbak.com/products/magbak-for-iphone-12-pro-6-1
Adapter: https://magbak.com/products/magbak-adapter

I think so far this is one of the best options. The magsafe adapter adds a stronger hold for the magnets, while giving the 15w charging. The stand is nice too, allowing for the magsafe charging.
