I ordered mine from Amazon on 10/25. Original delivery estimate was sometime in December, but they sent me an updated delivery estimate like a week after I ordered.
Thanks, hmm, I ordered on 10/23 on the ESR site and the only updates I've gotten are in response to my inquiries and tracking info showing the item at O'Hare having cleared customs on 11/3. I would have preferred to order through Amazon but didn't see the option then and, strangely, can't find it now either - any chance you could share a link to the Amazon listing you used?

Yeah it's really weird - it popped up in my Amazon search results, I ordered it, and then it was gone the next day. Currently shows as unavailable so I have no idea what happened.

Yeah that was my thought as well. Just wouldn't help in landscape mode, on that mount anyway.
Belkin seems to suggest it does - my guess would be it's set up to allow rotating the mount and having it hold in place in some manner. https://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-WIC002/

Can't remember ever using a car phone mount in landscape mode though so it's not been something I've thought much about.

Ahh didn't think about rotating the mount. Yeah sounds right. If only it had a charger built in 😂🤣

I don’t have a MagSafe charger yet. But check out this video from Unbox Therapy. Their MagSafe puck comes off the phone with case, pretty easily.

Forward to 2 minutes 50 seconds.
That’s interesting. Is it limited to the clear case since it’s more slippery? Or maybe just defective?
I have had zero issues (I think my video is in the 3rd page of this thread). I cannot move or knock my phone off. Only interactions perpendicular to the front or back of the phone will dislodge it. It’s sad to see others not having this success. But I’ve seen a few who have, which means it’s either something we’re doing differently, or there are some defective units out there.

With the car mount, I’ve not had an issue with it falling off - just rotating. I hit some pretty bumpy dirt roads with no problem. I’d say the magnets are just strong enough. The rotating is happening because both the case and the mount are smooth shiny material (that’s my hypothesis anyway).

Yeah, lack of charging seems like a big miss to me. There's a LOT of vehicles on the road which don't have CarPlay of any sort, and if I were to upgrade the headunit I'd buy one supporting wireless carplay not wired.

With the new MagSafe accessories starting to arrive, I am interested to see if there will be phone mounts for a vehicle that will allow the use of the MagSafe magnets without having to add additional magnets to the back of your iPhone or case. I don't really care about wireless charging in my vehicle since I have to plug it in for CarPlay to work anyway, so as long as a magnetic mount will work, I'm in.
Let me know if you find something. My old Scosche magnet holder requires a plate on the back of the phone, which I believe will affect the Magsafe charger I have at home. And it's not strong or large enough to support the weight of the phone with just the Magsafe magnets on the phone and silicon case.

My car requires a wired connection for CarPlay to work, so I am looking for just a phone mount (don't need charging). Having to pay $40 for the Belkin is killing me! I tried several of those clamp style ones but don't like them because they're hard to put the phone in, and come off the air vent every time I remove the phone. The gravity ones that I've seen seem flimsy like the phone will fall off.

Has anyone found a solution?

iOttie makes a decent clamp style - doesn't engage until you put the phone in releasing the side clamps, then releases the phone (resting on the bottom ledge) by pushing in from the sides before grabbing your phone.

Also look at CD-slot-mount phone holders, as well as looking into what ProClipUSA makes for your vehicle.

While vent mounts are usually more universal, I also think they suck.

Once my mount and everything shows up I can share how I'm going to do it. It will be a mixture of a Pitaka MagEZ mount and a universal 17mm ball mount from Amazon since I'm really picky about where the phone will sit.

I have a couple of iOttie holders that you wrote about and they are awesome. Its a 1 handed operation to insert and remove the phone, and it holds very securely. I'm just going to go with a magnet type mount this time.

Scoshe has a Qi charging magnetic mount - the two magnets are located above and below the Qi pad. I've been using it for a couple years with my XS and the Speck case that was made in collaboration with Scoshe at that time and had factory embedded metal plates.

Overall it's work pretty well, but has also been fairly easy to knock the phone off the magnetic mount.

Bad news for those fans of Scosche's large magnet mounts (via ProClip) - works pretty well with the bare phone, not so much on the leather case*. Slips down relatively easily, though the initial "grip"/"bite" of the magnet feels otherwise. That said, the new leather cases look NICE!

Can you say more about your setup (what phone, what case, using MagSafe vs Scosche plates)?

iPhone 12 Pro, with the Apple leather MagSafe case. Using it on ProClip’s dash mount in a 2018 Audi A5 and the Scosche Magic Mount Pro XL. No plate because Qi charging. Sticks alright in one specific position but I have concerns about it staying there.

I wish Moment would release their mount before March of next year, otherwise I’m going to devise my own (similar) solution. Oddly enough, the iPhone 12 Pro seems to stick to the plate fine on its own, but I’m not going caseless.

So I decided to order an Apple leather MagSafe case while waiting for my MagBak case and MagSafe bridge to ship at the end of the month, and the Apple case came in the mail today. I had already purchased a MagSafe charger from Apple when I ordered my 12 Pro but was skeptical it would have a strong enough hold for the car. To my surprise, the strength of the hold when combined with the leather case is definitely enough for normal driving conditions (bumpy roads included).

I discovered that the magnetic plate that comes with Wyze cameras is the perfect size for the MagSafe charging puck. The plate can be attached to the puck with the 3M adhesive that comes with the Wyze cam and plate and provides an incredibly strong magnetic surface for my existing magnetic vent mount to attach to.

I’ve attached a couple photos showing the plate from the Wyze cam in comparison with the puck, as well as a short video showing just how strong the magnetic connection is from the plate to the magnetic vent mount I have. As you can see in the video, trying to remove the MagSafe puck from the vent mount actually separated the mount from its metal ball socket because the force at that point is actually weaker than the force between the mount surface and the Wyze plate.

I suspect that any similar magnetic mount for the car will have a similar strength of attraction, which will allow you to easily mount and unmount the phone without worrying about displacing the MagSafe puck, so this is a great option for those who are looking for a mount/charging solution that offers the speed of MagSafe and allows you to find a mounting solution that works for your needs, be it vent, suction, CD slot, or otherwise.

Will MagSafe for the case attach to the magnet on that mount without the MagSafe charging cable? I have to plug-in for CarPlay so it doesn’t make much sense to have wireless charging in this case.

It can but it’s a very weak attachment. Not something that would reliably hold the phone in place.

I imagine the Belkin Vent Mount Pro or a similar MagSafe specific car mount will do the job. But you’ll want something similar to the way the Belkin is designed or something with a grippier surface than the ESR phone mount to prevent the phone from freely rotating while on the mount.

I also imagine that extra vertical magnet will help as well. Just wish they were shipping sooner.

Yeah I don't understand those Magsafe car mounts that have just the round magnet. You need that little magnet below the round one as well to keep the phone from spinning on the mount. It also enhances the hold on the phone.

Just got off chats with:
  • Moment, who said they're going to release all the MagSafe products in March, instead of rolling out "ready" products one at a time.
  • Scosche, who said they'll have MagSafe mounts available in January 2021.
Opened up my MagicMount Pro XL Surface to see the magnet array, and they're aligned in an X-shape, which explains the spotty magnetism with the Apple MagSafe case. Wonder if those can be re-arranged... Otherwise, I may try my luck on AliExpress, since there are plenty of similar products there with December arrival dates.

Part of me just wants to buy another $40 MagSafe puck and slap it on the ProClip adapter with 3M tape, similar to what @sh0ebox did. Wonder if the $10-19 third-party pucks would hold as effectively, not even considering the Qi charging.

I also have CarPlay that requires me to plugin, so I don't care about having the wireless charging setup at all. I currently use a proclip car mount in my car (which is super sturdy and I never want to have to go back to trying to use those annoying vent holders) with a iOauto Pro Magnetic Mount which is super strong. On my iPhone 11 Pro Max, I have a plate that I place inside the apple leather case, and it holds the phone just fine. With my new iPhone 12 pro max (arriving tomorrow!) I don't know how I'm going to mount it, except maybe via the same mechanism for now. I'd really love to use the new built in magnet ring instead of needing that plate inside the case so I could use the wireless charging inside the house if I wanted to.

I'm hoping proclip comes out with a magentic mount that will work with the iphone 12 built in MagSafe setup, but don't see anything on their website yet, and emailing them got me a response that left me not sure as they were focused on compatibility with Qi chargers and that didn't really answer my question.
