Thank you for this well through out and written response. The original post is making the claim (or at least alluding to it) that the iPhone 12 series is incompatible with any wireless charging outside of MagSafe and that is just clearly and obviously false. I think MacRumors needs to put some Twitter style fact check messages in certain posts.

Don't be ridiculous. OP said Qi chargers are slower than using MagSafe, using logic you can conclude that "regular" wireless charging is obviously still supported.

I see folks complaining about the lack of power bricks with Magsafe and phones. If it saves me even a little, then I am glad. I have many, many great power bricks that are multipurpose up to 90W. Last thing I need is a bunch more low wattage bricklets. I have settled on GaaN chargers from Anker and RavPower and never look back. Many good manufacturers making much better devices that anything that would be bundled.

If you have a MagSafe phone can you no longer use other charging pads or, if you do, they perform worse than they used to?

Do the MagSafe phones / cases damage credit cards, watches or attract paper clips etc ?
Considering that even my husband’s regular iphone 8 recently wiped a hotel room key, I would keep a hotel key away. Not sure about anything else though. Considering they sell a (horrible) magsafe wallet product, I would think Apple would have made sure those would be okay. But if you want to be safe, just keep that kind of stuff away.

I’m not sure if it’s the worst product but I’d say it’s not interesting or needed. I have exactly zero desire to have this thing. But who am I to judge. Honestly, I think Apple is trying to prepare us for the portless phones. I’m giving Lightning max 2 years.

How would diagnostics/recovery work without a port? Or people’s medical devices? Seems like a problem to me.

They can actually do diagnostics wirelessly now. When I took my iPhone 11 Max in for an issue a couple of months ago to an Apple store they never hooked it to a wire once and did it all with this wireless tool they brought over to the phone.

Okay. Interesting. But can they recover a bricked device that way?

Fantastic post.

Pardon my ignorance but how will diagnostics be run on a phone without a port?
Because MagSafe *is* a port. It’s just a port without a physical ingress. A cable still comes into contact, and electrical signals are still transmitted - except the “stick it in” step has been removed.

Irritated that ALL my current Anker and Samsung wireless chargers, which worked flawlessly with every previous generation of wireless charge capable iphone. Will absolutely not work with the wife and I’s new 12pm’s. Magsafe wont work through any case that offers real protection(otter defender pro for us). Sooo, back to wired charging until they take the port from us.. oh well, better for the battery anyway I suppose.

Solution seems simple to me... buy an Apple Qi charger.

Wait, that was the point of this thread. 🤣

But ona serious note, you chose a super-thick case and then complain when Apple *told* everyone that some cases may cause issues with the MagSafe tech? Seems like a first-world problem to me. Why didn't you wait and get a MagSafe-compatible Otter case? That would have been the smart-buyer choice, right?

If such a "portless" phone were to ship, I'd expect they'd do diagnostics same way they do it on the "portless" Apple Watch:

They open the diagnostic port door and access it that way.

The title of this thread is so silly, how can you even say something so absurd! The magic mouse exists still you know! Second worst would be a much more appropriate title ;)

I think the portless iPhone design will have less to do with finances than hardware security. See articles like this for more info.

Anyone remember the completely round mouse? It went with the Steve Job’s iMacs. Couldn’t tell what end was up until you found the tail/cord. Apple has never been perfect, but they do better IMHO. Hopefully people buy what’s in their budget and makes them happy.

Half of my life is spent in hotel rooms and AirBnBs, my only fear about MagSafe's magnets is that it will ruin my cards. Also I fear for my money cards, hard to emergency order new ones in some countries in case they get damaged.

You just described the future of sex during endless pandemics

Magsafe is working fine for my house. My wife was notorious for breaking lightning cables while stretching them while lying in bed now uses Magsafe and her phone can charge while she’s on it easily.

I modified one of my Qi charging stands by drilling a hole in it and using some 3M tape. (Pic below). My Samsung Qi and Tesla wireless chargers still work. The other one that didn’t work at my office desk didnt work with my iPhone 12 mini but works for my wife’s iPhone 12, so she took it to her desk.

I do think the new MagSafe connectors make the phone much more comfortable to hold, like when lying in bed 😬. The old lightning cord was always painful on my pinky and chest, and I think me resting the phone/cord on my chest always bent the cord contributing to them always breaking. Hopefully this solution will be better. I do wish they’d go to USB C. I’m trying to go all in on the USB C form factor, but Apple is making that difficult. A lot of people would still buy the Apple cords, so I’m not sure what their deal is.
