Tell me again why MagSafe is called "wireless" charging?

Please explain how its being pedantic that I'm claiming that Apple's wireless charging is no more wireless than anyone else's. Go ahead, I'll wait.

All "wireless" charging has a cord involved. To say it isn't wireless charging because there is a cord involved is being pedantic... arguing over semantics when the word wireless charging is the common parlance for inductive charging.

Right, so you are agreeing with me. You need to read what I was responding to before making comments. The person I was responding to was claiming that other wireless chargers can't really be called wireless chargers because they aren't wireless. I responded that Magsafe was absolutely not wireless so it can't 't make that claim either.

So no one was arguing over semantics, you just didn't know what you were responding to.

I'm sorry, I've tried to love this product, and then I even tried to just like it, but its just absolutely terrible. Apple has effectively ruined wireless charging in their new devices all in the name of keeping things proprietary for them to keep the cash rolling in. Its is such a poorly done product that makes absolutely zero sense outside of Apple screwing over both the consumer, and manufacturers of Qi charging products.

I watched an interesting video on YouTube (SnazzyLabs) who theorized that Apple made MagSafe because they refuse to comply with the EU's new law that states that all manufacturers must now use the same chargers (USB-C). Apple will be forced after this year to make all of their phones with a standard USB-C charging cable. Well that would be a huge loss of income for Apple due to the fact that the lightning cable and 3rd party MFI (Made for iPhone) lightning cables is a billion dollar industry. Apple makes $4 for every single lightning cable sold in the world with the MFI logo on them. That is a massive amount of money lost if they had to comply to this new law in Europe. So to get around this law, they are going to make a portless phone that only charges with Magsafe next year. 3rd party Manufacturers will have to comply to Apple's standards and have the MFI logo put on any MagSafe alternatives to wirelessly charging, which keeps the cash in Apple's hands. I realize this is a business but they are forcing manufacturers to comply to a new standard of wireless charging while also making us as the consumer buy new wireless chargers if we want to get the full benefit out of them.

The other reason I hate Magsafe is that its crippled all of my other wireless chargers. Apple purposely made its new iPhones only capable of charging at a VERY low wattage on standard Qi charging pads. This is obviously done to push people to use MagSafe, or to buy the new wireless chargers that will have the (MFI) logo on them that comply to Apple's new wireless charging standards. My wireless chargers charge my iPhone 12 max so slowly now that its not really worth using them if I need to get a quick charge in.

Outside of those reasons above, I don't like it becuase its the same as using a cable, it heats up your phone way to much, the cord is too short, the cord gets in the way if not pointed directly down, it damages Apple's expensive leather case, and to me its a completely pointless accessory that Apple is shoving on us because they refuse to make a standard USB-C charging cable for their phones.

I'm sorry for the rant but I had to get that out.
I have the 12 Mini and I just got the MagSafe charger for it. I have to say it's terrible. with the magnet it's hard to pick up the phone from the charger on the desk with one hand. It's almost like this MagSafe charger is better for non-=magnetized iPhones like the 11, XR, X. I just don't get what they are doing over their at Apple. Big Sur terrible. MacMini now with 2 TB ports. It's like a series of bad decision.

Problem solved. If you want the puck to stay put... use these to secure it to the nightstand or whatever. If you want the puck to pick up with the phone, don't use them.

It's not rocket surgery.

As I drop off this thread, I will leave this parting comment;

I have two Anker stands that I use to charge my 12 ProMax.
The stands work and charge just not at “fast” speeds. As they are stands you always place the devices in the correct position.
They just work.

At this time I see no use for a MagSafe charger. What I have works well.

A port-less phone is going to come, but it’s a few years off in my opinion. iPhone 13 will basically be an “s” upgrade with better power conservative 5G, maybe a screen refresh improvement, further camera improvements and a few different colours.

Apple won’t just go all out with every improvement they can, that’s not how they operate even if they could, if they wanted.

I bought the MagSafe charger, but personally it wasn’t required. I use the 5w charger over night, and in the rare case I need a quick top up I have a 20w Apple fast charger. I’ve also got Apple Play in my cars so it’s charging all the time with that anyway.

The fact that it can leave marks on the phone and case is also another reason I returned mine.

But it’s potentially a good starting point going forward if Apple improve upon what it is now with better accessories etc.

I prefer it because I like the secure feeling of a snapping into place. There are too many times when I didn't place my iPhone on the charger overnight and work up with no battery left.

This makes perfect sense! Everyone has different preferences and use cases. I'm using an old YooTech charger left over from my Android days on my desk and it is great as well.

I put my Magsafe charger in my car where it fits my needs better as a mount/charger for easy one-handed mounting/removal.

It's simple - if you don't like it don't buy it!
That’s about the best advice you’re going to get.

I wouldn’t say I don’t like it, because I’ve not used it. I just don’t see the point in paying £39 for the puck and a further £19 for a plug when I already have the ability to charge my iPhone with older chargers? I just haven’t bought it, so problem solved .

Yeah I get that, but people are acting like wireless charging before Apple came out with Magsafe was some massively impossible feat to keep phones on the chargers. If it was such an inconvenience to use the wireless chargers then why did anyone use them? If I continuously had problems with the wireless charger not charging my phone overnight becuase the phone came off of it I'm not sure I would continue using it.

I feared a port-less iPhone, that's why I bought the 12 Pro Max this year. If they're port-less going forward, this could be my last iPhone for a while, should have good enough specs & cameras to last for a bit. Did not want to wait until the next announcement, because Apple doesn't sell the high end models anymore after introducing new ones. They just get discontinued on the spot.

I dislike the idea of MagSafe being the only charging the phone. Also I don't know how we will be able to do phone backups & restores to our computers, or do a firmware restore if something goes wrong... I guess this will further add to the non-serviceability & non-repairability of iPhones. You'll have to have it serviced at Apple for everything.

just out of curiosity isn't mag safe just wireless charging that has existed on the iPhones for years?
yes---with a magnet that is annoying. I'm returning my 12 Mini 256GB and all the overpriced garbage that I bought in addition to it. Apple is headed straight downhill.

Help me understand. If you don't like the Magnet, how is the magnet bothering you? Functionally, if you don't get magnetized accessories, the phone is no different than previous phones in this regard. Unless maybe you work in a machine shop, where bits of metal shavings could be a problem I guess.

I find it interesting in that Apple refers to the MagSafe charger as being "wireless". Because it uses magnets to connect to the iPhone 12 family removing said iPhones from the charger involves picking up the iPhone with one hand and using the other hand to disconnect the charger from the phone. Is that more convenient than connecting/disconnecting a Lightning cable from the iPhone's port? I suppose you can lift the phone with one hand, then, "shake loose" the MagSafe charger.

Apple should make 2 MagSafe chargers: One as is, so you may use the iPhone whilst charging and one with a solid/heavier base so one may just "lift" the iPhone from the charger...just like you 'lift" an iPhone from all of the other wireless chargers upon which I've been acquainted until now.

Oh, the attached cable should be more than 1M, also.

I just got my MagSafe charger yesterday. I like it. I'm in agreement with the people who are frustrated when they wake up and realize their phone was off balance on the standard Qi charger and there is a dead battery. However, I do know that comes down to my own personal responsibility of making sure the phone is on the charger correctly in the first place. When that happens, I am more mad at myself for not being more careful than being upset with the alignment of a Qi charging device. I do like how the MagSafe just snaps on. I might use it at bedside instead of my other charger, though there was nothing wrong with the one I had and it charges the watch, phone, and the AirPods at the same time (Logi). Mostly, I think this solved an issue that never really existed. Nice to have, but completely unnecessary. I'm sure Apple has some plot for the future with the introduction of this now, such as going completely port-free. While it might be nice for the random person to dive deep into the ocean with their phone, I hope they abandon this idea though suspect they will not.

Having said all that, the first time I see a burned-in ring on my leather case, I will turn against MagSafe and never use it again. 😂

i bought the magsafe charger right away...used it for a couple of days. itʻs been sitting on my dresser unused for the past few weeks...i usually just use a Qi charger bc...my phone doesnʻt get hot and i donʻt have to use 2 hands to pick it up when i need to use it. not the greatest reasons, but practicality is important... not making a huge deal out of magsafe...i donʻt care for it so iʻm not using it...but as always, YMMV

Hello millions of wired carplay users !!
They will offer an adapter to use Carplay wirelessly. I have a 3rd party adapter now that I use to use it wirelessly. Of course that will be another $40-$50 for that.

You are supposed to lift the iPhone with the MagSafe still connected. Then remove the MagSafe with your other hand.

Yes it's more cumbersome than a standard Qi wireless charger.

Or if you won't want the puck to stick to the phone, just secure it to the table. Not sure why this is so hard?

I mean it's not. But it's kinda silly that it needs to be done to begin with.
Well I guess it depends on your preferences. I like to drop the phone on the charger and NOT use it while charging. My wife likes to pick up the phone while it is charging to check texts in bed. I suppose this design accommodates both use cases if I'm willing to stick mine to the nightstand. I'm sure there will be a plethora of weighted options on the 3rd party scene within a few months anyway.

Yes I agree.

The lack of official MagSafe 3rd party accessories is quite baffling. I don't know why more companies couldn't have worked with Apple to have them ready by now. For example I know of no dash mount with MagSafe. I'm sure many are coming. But I'd like to try one now versus just waiting and seeing.

Same here. For now I just used 3M dual lock fasteners to put the Magsafe puck on my dash. Benefit is it is rock solid, no wobble.

I suspect we'll see a ton of Magsafe puck "holders" in different form-factors kind of like how most Apple Watch stands have a cutout you thread the OEM charger into.
