I think the reason is, this allows you to set different sound for each mail box. I agree it is odd way to accomplish this. Would be better if it was all under the sounds tab.

Not completely related but is anyone here getting a random notification?? It's the tri tone alert! I've purposely not set any notification to this alert and it still happens!!

I tested this in iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 6. Problem still exists. Dammit Apple!

I had it work a few times. But, eventually it did the duplicate sound/echo.
Only seems to happen for me when my phone is locked and I get an email.
Do you have multiple mailboxes connected? You may have mail in another mailbox and you're just in the wrong view.
I've been experiencing the echo as well. I seem to recall having it on a past iOS version a couple of years ago too.
As in you get two vibrations? I've been having the same problem since day one. I don't think the situation's improved since updating to 8.1.
I get a notification for an email so go in... I load the mailbox go to inbox and get a fritter dong with the ejaik again lol!
lastly I'm getting a notification sound randomly with no actual notifications to show for it!! I even changed all ring tones but keep getting same classic ding but no app is set to use that ring tone.... not been fixed in 8. 1 tho

I'm reasonably certain that this has been resolved (finally) in the 8.1.1 beta. It's been an intermittent problem for me, so I hesitate to say for sure, but since I installed the 8.1.1 beta I've gotten a lot of emails with no double notifications. I'll let you know if I see the problem again with 8.1.1.
Please let this be true. Keep us updated. It would be very nice if this was finally resolved.
Running 8.1.1 beta on my 5s and I haven't noticed it since the update.

Surely, not everyone working at Apple keeps their phone sounds on and/or uses only the Gmail app? I'm shocked this hasn't been discovered in Cupertino.
