Well macOS 13.1 did fix the unresponsive keyboard issue. So while Capcom assumed the blame, it was actually a macOS bug.

Resident Evil also seems to run faster on 13.1, although this is just my impression.

What a great game RE is. But an odd choice by Apple's standards : this game is very violent ; not something Apple is usually comfortable with.

The graphics look a bit underwhelming but a welcome news is it will include all the DLCs. The Deluxe edition with DLCs cost €80 on Steam so it will be interesting to see the price on the App Store.

"GRID Legends will now release for macOS in 2023. It will be available exclusively from the Mac App Store and include all DLC in one rip-roaring package. The game will be fine-tuned to ensure the best racing experience on the complete range of Apple Silicon-powered Macs. For a glimpse of the legendary racing action coming your way, take a look at this in-development footage of GRID Legends running on a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro."

I wonder why it got pushed to next year.

The next Tomb Raider will be developed and published with help from Amazon Games, using Unreal engine 5 and will be released on multiple platforms. It won't be exclusive to Amazon Prime but wonder if it will come to Mac. The last three games were released on Mac and Epic said they're committed to developing UE 5 for Apple Silicon.

At the same time Embracer has shut down several mobile games like Deus Ex Go, and Hitman Sniper so people won't b able to play at all despite having purchased them.

And, Unreal Engine 5.1 is out now for Mac - complete with Lumen and Nanite support!

Has anyone been able to confirm whether or not Fortnite on Mac has been updated to 5.1 Lumen and Nanite?

Epic has been updating Fortnite on any Apple platform? I thought they stopped the updates.

Well, they are on the engine side of it. I was watching a YouTube video complaining about how the viewport frame rate of his was about half that of his PC, following the 5.1 update.

Let me know if you need me to post that link.

UE is still developed for macOS, but Fortnite?
It looks like EGS will let me install Fortnite, or at least the Install option isn't greyed out. Oddly the system requirements don't mention macOS at all. I guess I can try to take one for the team...

Yes it's been possible even after the conflict but it hasn't been updated so I think it's a very old version.

A few words about that 5.1 Unreal update, which came out last month.

  • 5.1 works via launcher for the Intel version which runs via Rosetta 2 layer. The native AS version for M1/M2 requires building from scratch with Xcode. Not a negative in my book, we're always building the engine from scratch on Linux (but not on Windows).
  • Performance for both versions with typical simple demo projects is about the same. The Intel/Rosetta version has more low level dips than AS native. But average and max frame rate are about the same on both.
  • Lumen works on both, without any performance difference to the non-Lumen versions.
  • Previous assets from 5.0 don't work on 5.1 (at least not all of them)
  • Nanite doesn't work on macOS. The Intel/Rosetta version keeps crashing like crazy. It doesn't work at all on the AS native version.
  • Lightmass doesn't work on the AS native version, so it's impossible to bake lightmaps. It does work on the Intel/Rosetta version.
  • As for performance, typical demo scenes run <20 fps average on a M1 Max. We're on 4090s now for regular desktops and as expected these are much, much more powerful. We have some Razer gaming laptops with 3070Ti and 3080Ti and the 3070Ti in Windows is more than double the fps compared to M1 Max (between 40 and 45 fps avg). Have not tested on the Studio editions with RTX5000.

Nothing of the above is new, it's been discussed up and down on other forums. That being said, it's been a few weeks since the release and I'm not sure if they supplied additional patches to change things. Time to test again next year with the next version.

Right now, at least for macOS, Unity offers a better experience for developers. While it's not free of problems, it's more stable than UE5.1 for now. Time will tell if that changes.

It's quite far from being complete. UE 5 is an experimental build for Apple Silicon. The editor itself is not available for download through the Epic Games launcher. You need to build it yourself with Xcode. Here are som quick conclusions from 5.1 on M1/M2:
  • Speed is about 15% faster
  • Lumen works but light baking does not
  • Nanite is unstable on both Intel and M1/M2 hardware, but especially when built for Apple hardware
  • No difference in battery life.

Regarding Light Mass mentioned in the video I found this among the comments:

Please do.

Splash screen, but no launch (I waited like an hour, lol).

I gave it a try since I apparently had installed it already on my external HDD for testing last year when I bought my MBP 14" M1 Pro 14c. It works and is v13.40. According to this it means Chapter 2 Season 3 which is from Aug 2020. The latest patch is 16.10 Chapter 2 Season 6 from March 2021. You get the following message at the start:

I could only choose between my scaled resolution of 1352 x 878 in "Windowed Fullscreen" or the native res of 3024 × 1964 in "Fullscreen". The game chose automatically the High settings at 878p.

Did you do anything special to get it to run?

No. Maybe it works because I had it already. It did some updates at launch and then I got the message about having an old version but then worked as usual. Which Mac did you try it on?
