I just learned today that Nat Brown left Apple. He was one of the main people pushing for gaming improvements on Apple’s platforms. For example GPTK, Game Mode, controller improvements.

Not gonna lie, it’s left me feeling a little concerned and sad, especially given his message that he was “pushing this particular rock”.

Apparently he left just in Aug. He was behind Metal Performance HUD as well I think. Perhaps he is looking for new bigger challenges and feels that he has done enough for Metal and GPTK. If you look at his LinkedIn the longest he has stayed at a company is 7 years at Microsoft. He worked for Valve for 3.5 years so he's been with Apple longer, 5 years and two months. Nevertheless it's a loss because of his major contributions.

I sincerely hope that his colleagues will take up the torch. We need all the help we can get.

Also, seeing some friends of mine get into VRChat, I feel like this is a missed opportunity for Apple. A casual social game seems right up their alley, and it would be a killer app for the Vision Pro.

Okay, I accepted but you may be disappointed because I only play single-player games and haven't ever used that feature. 😊
No worries. I sold my gaming PC back in December 2023 and got my first Mac around the same time. Haven't played a game since I sold my gaming PC.

Kvark for Apple Silicon is out now.

Whispering Willows for Mac is free on GOG if your Mac can handle 32-bit.

https://www.gog.com/en/game/whispering_willows

Sequoia 15.1 will be released soon and one of its most important features is the ability to store downloaded games/apps from App Store on external drives.

Why do developers continue to put their Mac/Apple silicon version of games on Steam instead of the Mac App Store considering there is no Apple silicon native version of Steam (yet?)? Referring to something like how the Windows version of the Resident Evil games and Death Stranding are on Steam but the Mac/Apple silicon versions are on the Mac App Store. Or do it like how Layers of Fear has both Windows and macOS versions on Steam but they also have the game on the Mac App Store.

Dealing with yet another app store takes effort, and there are inevitably technical issues that are specific to the store. If the developer does not already have people familiar with that store, they may have to hire new people. Which may not be worth it, if the expected sales are not particularly high.

And many gamers prefer cross-platform stores, because the games are not tied to any particular platform.

There's a new rumor in town!

Wow. That would be fascinating. I love many of the games Sony produce for the PS. I don’t wanna get my hopes up but I also would love Astro Bot or Horizon Zero Dawn etc on the Mac.

Interesting.

From a developer perspective, it's often easier from both a support and fiscal standpoint to have the Windows and Mac versions of a title available from the same platform instead of splitting them among different storefronts with differing guidelines for submission, approval, and reconciliation of purchases. Whether or not the Steam client itself is AS native has no bearing on the publishers' decision regarding the decision to publish a title on Steam.

I expect the same commitment as the partnership with capcom: some games from one franchise or two will be ported.
Assuming the rumor has any merit.
YESSSS!!!! PSN or no PSN. an Apple and Sony gaming partnership will be GODs. .

We've seen how well crossover does with PS games. Just a bit of optimizations. Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Ratchet and clank.

Please be true.

On New Year’s Eve! Scary New Year!

DREDGE is coming to macOS on December 18, 2024.

I swear, the gaming world would erupt if Apple gets a limited exclusive to Bloodborne remake.

"Bloodborne Remake coming to PS5 and PC. Exclusive 1-month on Apple Silicon."
Considering PC ports of Playstation games are netting, at best, roughly 10% of what the consoles sales were per title and then many titles like Returnal, Sackboy barely scrape a couple 100k in sales I wonder if Sony believes they could get at least that on the Mac, possibly much more, and then there are so many other potential collaboration opportunities over there. The relationship between Sony and MS I can only describe as somewhat abusive.

What do you think would happen if Sony halted all PC development except live service games and everything that ships on PlayStation including a Bloodborne remake and sequel became available exclusively on MacOS day and date?

There's no way Sony would drop anything day and date on the Mac (or PC) - that would potentially cut into their revenue on the console side of the equation.

Helldivers II on PC averaged over 300K users up until the point where PSN became a requirement. Then started to dip. Concord was also day 1, but........we all know how that game turned out.

Playstation does still value their console above all else. The PS5 sales and PS5 Pro shows that still holds.

Most likely Sony is starting to feel more open to allowing another revenue stream, since MacOS is still technically a "PC". I don't think they will be as open as MSFT is as far as providing Game Pass, Game Pass cloud, games on Geforce Now, console. It could be that players may see a closer gap between console and PC/MacOS versions.

I have a suspicion that the PS5 is intentionally being limited in its initial production runs to create the appearance of scarcity, just as the PS5 was on its initial launch. As far as the "hardcore" gamers go, there is still a sizeable gap between those who prefer PC and those who prefer consoles. It's almost tribalistic at times between those two communities, despite often playing the same games.
