These are single player games, they are expected to be played offline as is. Adding barriers to access is simply user hostile.

If say you are going on a long flight, planned to play RE4 with your iPhone or iPad during the 10 hours, 15 minutes after take off you launch the game to only be greeted by a server error message. And, not all flights have internet services, in fact a majority of them don't.

@Homy do the RE games on macOS also have the same DRM that the iOS versions just got updated with?

Someone on reddit is claiming that RE has DRM now because of piracy (under 5000 copies of Mac RE sold.... Over 10,0000 non purchased activations)

I didn't think you could pirate app bundles from the app store.

Are there any stats for the number of copies sold on the Mac App Store or are those the iOS stats? Anyway, the App Store provides almost no DRM by default, it's up the the developer to integrate some basic receipt validation or something more advanced.

Even then, everything is going to be cracked one way or another, so the pirated copies will just disable the code the requires the internet connection.

The reddit post had claimed the numbers came from capcoms sharehold call. not sure if they are mixing ios with macos.

Does anyone know if the shareholder call actually specified the number of games sold/pirated? 100,000 is a fairly high number.

On the plus side, it indicates there is a market for Mac games…if the price is right!

Someone later on mentioned that the game is free, you buy an unlock code to play the rest. So it is possible folks play the intro and never purchase the rest of the game.

Yes, the new update includes Mac too as Capcom says on its website. I don't know where they got the numbers on sold/pirated copies. I searched through Capcom's latest financial reports with some keywords but couldn't find anything. The numbers sound like the ones we've heard of before about the "bombed" sales from questionable sources. Yes, the games have worked like free demos from the start. You can play to a certain point and need to purchase the games after that.

It would be an annoyance in places where service is spotty with no WiFi backup.

I'm sure in some rare cases people won't have internet access but for the most part I don't think it will be a problem. With phones you'll have cellular access if Wi-Fi doesn't work and there is free Wi-Fi for Macs at airports or on planes. You can buy one hour internet on planes if it's not free and you can always share you phone’s internet with your Mac on a plane too. The internet connection is only needed to launch the game for control, not for gameplay so you could launch the game when you have internet access, like before boarding the plane and put your Mac to sleep and then start playing on the plane. I just updated RE 7 and it takes a second to check the purchase history so that’s how long you need an internet connection.

It feels like a "slippery slope". Or more like a cat and mouse game. PC players already complain about games that require an internet connection but are single player. macOS players were being spared that annoyance.

Yeah, blame the piracy for that.

Frostpunk 2 will include a modding tool at launch. It's unclear if it will support Mac but I'm sure the mods will be playable since they'll be made in UE5 and the engine and the game is available for Mac.

Maid of Sker is coming to Mac on Sep 10 on App Store.

It has "Very Positive" reviews on Steam.

Fealty comes to Mac on Sep 12.

I've read that heat is bad for batteries. Does this mean you should avoid playing games on a MacBook even if you are plugged-in as the heat generated while gaming is likely to degrade the battery?

Well, yes! All heat exposure is bad in the long term.

Unless its a Macbook Air or iPad, all Macs have fans. Even if temps reach a certain threshold, the fans do kick in.

My opinion, play your games as long as you want. I used to game on my Macbook Pro back in college 4-hours a day with the fans going full blast. 0 battery damage.

Excessive heat is bad for batteries. However, there is an entire submarket of gaming laptops for a reason. Unless the system in question lacks adequate cooling capabilities (i.e. anything fanless), then the heat generated through gaming is less of a concern than the actual battery life itself. This is not specific to the Mac - rather this applies to any computer regardless of OS.

Thanks for the replies.

Would you guys say the cooling capability of the MacBook Pro 14" with the M3 Pro chip is adequate enough for gaming?

Yes. I would recommend TG Pro. It can be used to manually adjust and configure fan control. You can set your own custom fan settings/curve.

Ten Bells is released for Mac/Apple Silicon with positive reviews.

To me, it would depend on how graphically intensive the games were and whether or not you consider yourself to be a competitive gamer??

Mainly single player games such as the Apple silicon ports of Layers of Fear, Resident Evil games, etc. If the game doesn't have a native Apple silicon port, I won't be playing it on my Mac.

You should be good in that case, as you can imagine, native games will scale well with the processor of your Mac.

Have fun!!

One thing to consider is also the fan noise. Running almost any major game on a Macbook makes the fans spin loudly even with Apple Silicon. I have a MBP 14" with M1 Pro and was a bit surprised but the sound level is nowhere near a PC. If you use headphones it's no problem but worth to mention since some people can be very sensitive to fan noise. if you're using a fanless MBA that's of course of no concern.
